Two cavaliers move up country

The Boland Cavaliers suffered a double blow when two of their star players decided to play their rugby elsewhere next season.

Rugby 365 reports that coach Deon Davids is devastated.

“Yes, I can confirm that loosehead prop Jean Botha will turn out for the Cheetahs next season and No.8 Dries van Schalkwyk for the Blue Bulls,” Davids said.

“It’s a massive blow.

“They have been two of our stars so far this season. Without a sponsor and money on the table I am not in a position to keep them playing for Boland,” Davids said.

Davids said both players guaranteed him their utmost best until the very last day with the Cavaliers.

“I can understand their positions. Therefore there is no hard-feelings,” Davids said.

Since the Fidentia scandal early last year left Boland without a major sponsor, the team has lost several stars to other provinces.

They include Hennie Daniller, Jongi Nokwe, Tewis de Bruyn and David de Villiers (Cheetahs), Rayno Benjamin and Walter Venter (Lions), JP Joubert (Blue Bulls), Dewaldt Duvenage and Ruan du Preez (WP), Piet Myburgh (Italy), Coenie Basson (France), Francois Prinsloo (New Zealand) and Jacques Schutte and Callie Wannenburg (Falcons).

And if that is not enough, experienced Henley du Plessis and Tommy Dixon have retired because on injuries, while hooker and captain Conrad Burke will only return to the playing field next season – also because of an injury.

  • Silly season is upon us, I expect we will see quite a few more moving players in coming weeks.

  • This screams “transfer fees” to any rational-thinking person and would create an environment where the smaller Unions aren’t in crisis financially and would make their money developing players. Almost like Academies that play CC rugby.

It seems to make so much sense….

  • @FlashFulstrip (Comment 2) :

i agree, transfer fees make a lot of sense, things would be a lot healthier for the smaller unions as for SA rugby on the whole

And in all probability it will come to late meaning they will have to start rebuilding from scratch.

  • Why can SARU not act as sole distributor of money in equal portions to Unions? Off course, all income will have to go to them as well. That “could” serve SA rugby as a whole.

  • @Silver Fox (Comment 8) : um, no… worst possible idea.

Small unions are in the state they’re in cos they’ve been run by freeloading “boeties” all these years. There’s not a competent administrator in sight.

The real answer is to shut the lot of them down. They’re a drain on SA Rugby.

  • Cannot resist…sorry!

A study conducted by UCLA?s Department of Psychiatry has revealed that
the kind of face a woman finds attractive on a man can differ
    depending
on where she is in her menstrual cycle.
For example: If she is ovulating, she is attracted to men with rugged
    and masculine features.
However, if she is pre-menstrual or menopausal, she tends to be more
attracted to a man with duct tape over his mouth and a spear lodged in
his forehead while he is on fire.

    No further studies are expected.

Ice, I’m sarcastic with the fellow!! How can you be ragged and young?

Hey, it is like the journalist interviewing the three old men.First one” Oom, what is your secret to becoming 97?” “Alcohol, as much as you can, as often as you can.”
Second Oom “Oom, how did you become so old?” “Tabacco son, for most of my 88 years I have smoked”
Third Oom, bent with age “Oom, how did you become so old?” “Women son” “And how old are you Oom?” “Thirty eight son”

    Hey
