CJ gets 4 week ban

CJ vd Linde has been handed a 4 week suspension from all rugby for his “loskop” leading with the head attempted clean out at a ruck in Saturday’s Tri-Nations match between SA and Australia in Durban.

The suspension was expected and in my opinion he actually got of lightly.

CJ vd Linde, who has gained a small reputation for giving away unnecessary penalties of late, for exactly this style of offence, will be relieved that the sanction is only for four weeks. Especially in light of the recent IRB memo reiterating their stance of zero tolerance on this type of foul play in rugby.

Springbok coach Pieter De Villiers has indicated that he expected Van Der Linde to be suspended and has put Jannie Du Plessis on standby to join the Boks should this have happened.

Van Der Linde who is due to leave South Africa to join up with his new club Leinster immediately after the conclusion of the tri-nations series will now have a little more free time on his hands.

Then he would have got 8 weeks from SANZAR  and I would have gladly paid towards a fund for CJ to go and spend two of those at a vacation resort of his choice.

    CAREFULL now guys!!!!

    If I happen to disagree here…. , but I don’t.

It should be simple: Headbutt 8 weeks ( your own union may add to that)
Speartackle 6 weeks… and so forth. It should not be debatable for any player!!!

Only then will some of these thickheads listen. Hopefully without pay during such suspensions!!!

  • Can’t argue that he deserved his suspension. It was a totally idiotic thing to do. Worst of all it cost us another 3 points at a time when we basically couldn’t get on the scoreboard ourselves.

In addition, when the Boks do things like this, it gets to the refs psychologically and they tend to notice our infringements more than the opposition.

If that was Dunning or Woodcock, they would probably have got away with a one week suspension and no-one would have said anything!!

  • Yea its hard to complain, he probably deserved worse. He has been developinginto a bit of 3 points to the opposistion for explosions like this, and lets not mention the other gift of three for scrumming – something he seems to get hit with week after week.

Can you imagine if Schalk has speared McCaw and put him out for 10 weeks, he would have got a year ban!

  • CJ’s ban is fair. He went in head first no arms & made contact with opposition players head.

Elsom’s ban is fair as well. Should maybe have received a yellow during the match, but failing that a week’s ban is cool with me.

  • @McLovin (Comment 23) : I read it like this: Two guys were found guilty in that they “intended” to hurt two other players by using foul play. In both incidents the opposing players escaped serious injury, though not through lack of intent from the perpetrators. Now if both got 4 weeks or longer I would have been extremely happy!!

  • @Silver Fox (Comment 26) : I could be wrong but I don’t think Elsom intented to injure Matfield. He simply attempted to disrupt the Boks lineout ball through illegal means. But that’s just me.

  • Pulling down someone in the line-out is certainly not the same as a flying headbutt.

Please take off the green-tinted glasses.

These penalties that are ebstowed have anyway got ranges so your bleating about comparing Elsom to CJ is ridiculous anyway.

  • Springboks consinder van der Linde appeal

South Africa will consider appealing against the four-week suspension handed out to prop CJ van der Linde on Wednesday.

National teams’ manager Andy Marinos said the decision would be made once they had received the full report of the

SANZAR Judicial Officer, Nick Davidson QC of New Zealand.

Van der Linde was cleared of a charge of striking Australian scrumhalf Sam Cordingley with his head. He was suspended until 22 September after pleading guilty to a lesser charge of dangerously entering a ruck.

“We’ll consider an appeal once we have seen the full verdict,” said Marinos. “We should receive it in the morning [Wednesday], after which we have 48 hours to appeal if we so wish.”

Please do nothing more than consider the appeal?

Firstly the guy is guilty, actually deserved more and should learn his lesson from this as he obviously didn’t during the game. He was penalised later for a shoulder charge as well.

Secondly, WHY bother? Let him go and rest at Leinster.
