Jake ready to ‘save’ Boks

Written by Andre Bosch (KSA Shark ©)

Posted in :In the news, Springboks on 26 Aug 2008 at 22:27

Former Springbok coach Jake White says he is ready to help save the team from their present crisis. He also wants to play a notable role in the future of SA rugby.

“I want to be director of rugby in South Africa,” White said on Tuesday.

But the man who masterminded the SA World Cup triumph in France last year does not want his former job back and he wants to stay out of the limelight.

Stephen Nell writes in Die Burger that SA Rugby Union president Oregan Hoskins has already made it clear that Peter de Villiers’s position as national coach is in no danger.

However, the Springboks have lost four of their five Tri-Nations Test matches this season and the players seem to be struggling to adapt to De Villiers’s rugby philosophy.

“I don’t want to become rich from SA rugby,” White said. “I don’t want to be in the limelight and I’m not looking for the pressures that go with it. I’ve had my turn.

“All I’d like to do is help. That’s what I have always wanted to do.”

White was unable to attend the Test in Durban last week when Australia beat South Africa 27-15.

However, he has formed an opinion on the basis of observations he made during other matches.

Comfortable with the players

“There are too many forwards standing around in the backline,” he said. “They try to do half of what we did, and half of their own thing. Half of everything leaves you with nothing,” White said.

“Schalk Burger was, until recently, the best player in the world. Now he is replaced during a match by Luke Watson. I don’t understand that.”

White said it would be easy for him to join in as a consultant. He would be comfortable with the players because the core of the team that had won the World Cup was still there.

Former Wallaby coach Eddie Jones, who was an adviser to the Springboks last year, has meanwhile told an English daily newspaper, The Independent, that De Villiers’s idea to play running rugby was doomed from the start.

The Springboks will get worse if they continue in this way,” Jones said. “No one in world rugby is playing the way their coach is talking about; not successfully anyway.

“Everyone has discipline, policies and a procedure in their game. The way he is talking is nonsense. You can’t just play an expansive, wide game.”

Plenty of talent

Talking about the Springboks, Jones said, “This is still a very good squad of players. Most are even at their peak or approaching it. So there is plenty of talent but what they need is the organisation and discipline.

“The hard thing for Peter is that he has never coached professionally and this is one of the most difficult teams to coach.

“He has to change his philosophy because it doesn’t suit these players.

“Peter’s big test now is to learn. If he learns, he can turn it around. But if he continues to be stubborn, he won’t last long because his tactics won’t work.”

Jones said the experimental laws required of players to be fitter than before, and the ability to play from unstructured match situations. But rugby had not changed basically.

New Zealand played “nearly traditional rugby” when they beat Australia 39-10 in Auckland and the Crusaders played a similar game in the Super 14 series.

  • i was waiting for this.

How utterly predictable. I can’t believe Jake sais this.

It’s one thing having fans build castles in the sky about the previous coach teaming up with new coach but it’s a whole lot of nothing to do this like this. Not in the press man, come on.
What kind of a kak situation is SARU and de Villiers in now? FFS does he go cap in hand and say “yes please Jake” and SARU admits it cocked up by not trying to keep Jake on to do a hand-over?

Would it really have been so much more effort and carried so much more weight if Jake had phoned PdV and offered help over the phone leaving de Villiers to go to the press if he decided to was for the best?

But instead he goes to the press? That’s shocking and almost certainly this now won’t happen. And that’s not for the best. It would be great if they teamed up for a bit, if only so that Jake could share some of the titbits he learned over the last few years about players, opposition strategies etc. He wouldnt even need to coahc the team – he cold just point things out.

And fair enough, this is probably a journo twisting his words.
Somethign to the tune of “Jake wouldnt you like to help”? and Jake resposne with “of course I will always do anything for Bok rugby”.

But still, even then jake, you should bloody know better.
Now you sound like you’re running to the rescue of the new guy who coldn’t cut it.

    Idiot.

    Vinnie.

Jake makes it clear he doesn’t want the coaching job but a DOR job.

Quite HOW that will work in saving or even helping the Boks I am not sure. PDV has made it clear that he is NOT going to deviate from his intended style and JW becoming DOR and suggesting a different style is not something that PDV would accept IMO.

  • @VinChainSaw (Comment 2) : Quite right here in more an even broader respect. Noticed how everyone, ie the players that want to become captain, PDV fighting to keep himself justified, journalists that try to become famous overnight, Jake White and Eddie Jones trying to promote themselves, all fighting in the media for attention.

Now I call that the sharks are circling, only that would not be OUR SHARKS, it would be the money hungry, powermad sharks sensing a weakness somewhere. It happened to other coaches as well and I suspect it will happen where ever there are this kind of prestige and money on offer.

PDV NEEDS to do exactly what all these detractors are shouting against. Now are the time to ignore them all, get his players in line and push through with his vision. Only then ( and this at the risk of being called hardheaded and other names ) will he be his own man and not become a puppet in the hands of people that are used to playing this kind of backstabbing game.

Go PDV, like the man said, rugby stayed the same since the age of the cavemen tossing an egg around. Get the basics in there, drop a negative player or two and press on.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 3) : I do not see why a running style of rugby should be labelled as wrong. The Brumbies did that with great results and at one stage was feared for just that. Now couple that style with forward dominance ( this is where we are lacking ) and we could be world beaters in an exciting style.

JW imo are trying to use PDV’s so called “failures” to promote whatever it is that he has in mind. He said himself that he had his turn, so why butt in now?

  • @Silver Fox (Comment 5) :

i also have no problem with a running style of Rugby. The only problem we have at the moment is that it seems the forwards are buying into the running style TOO MUCH and are forgetting that it should be the backs who are out in the stand-off, center and wing positions.

BUT is it them or are they being told to stand there? from PDV’s utterances on not commiting so many players to the rucks it seems that they are being told to stand there.

I believe if we can change that ONE aspect (telling the forwards to be forwards) of PDV’s game plan and couple it with someone who can help the handling (Cheryl Calder) and bang the rest of the world will be back to shitting themselves when they hear the Boks are coming.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 6) : You are right off course. It is one thing I have been saying right from the minute he said we should commit less players to the ruck. IMO that is his big failure at this stage, but could be rectified. That is also the reason for a lot of these ill feelings and players performing below par.

Look, PDV are inexperienced in certain ways. Not coaching as such, but the way the big boys play ( and they play dirty ). By big boys I include a lot of people, even some players.

To answer your question about who tell them to stand in the backline. I think some of the older hands may have something to do with it. Taking advantage of the new coach, they promote the ideas and then want to have easy games where they can shine out wide while “someone else” does the dirty work.

Therefore I am on a mission this morning to ask PDV to send the whole lot of knowalls some place hot and to do his own thing. Hell, if he does not make it, he would at least be able to say that was me, not some puppet being played like a tapdancer.

The views of his and Eddie Jones seem to have appeared at very much the same time, orchestrated maybe.
Maybe its not really Jake offering help at all but rather him and Ediie making everyone patently aware of the differences of their world cup winning efforts and the present situation. Call it preserving their legacy if you want because as sure as hell (and its happened here already) people are now going to start saying that winning the world cup was easy, etc, etc.

  • Mmmmm what is wrong with guys..Here is a man that lives eats and breaths SA Rugby , all he is doing is offering he’s help…BIG DEAL!

Hell it must be difficult for him seeing a team he watched grow and now seeing them falter.

  • Howzit Robd , just returned from 2 weeks in Kenya , Masai Mara and Lake Nakuru taking in the delights that Africa has too offer.Missed the Bok games so can’t really comment but 19-zip and the loss to the Aussies doesn’t sound to promising.

    How you keeping?

Anyways not to worry now that Ill catch Sat game the Boks will win and then go onto clean sweep the EOYT..Im fairly certain of that.Don’t see the need to crucify PDV…not yet anyhow.
