The Sharks have named their side to take on Boland in Wellington on Friday afternoon.

Skipper Johann Muller has been ruled out with a knee injury, while Jannie du Plessis and Odwa Ndungane have been called up to the Bok side. Scott Mathie’s move to the UK, as well as Ruan Pienaar and Frans Steyn’s continued unavailability means there will be 6 changes to the team that beat Province at Newlands three weeks ago.

Brad Barritt takes over the captaincy in Muller’s absence and will have a new partner at outside centre in the form of Riaan Swanepoel. Regular 13 Waylon Murray will play at left wing, with Chris Jordaan on the right and veteran Stefan Terblanche continuing at fullback. French maestro Fred Michalak will be debutant Charl McLeod’s halfback partner this week. A fit-again Rory Kockott will play off the bench.

Young Pat Cilliers has (quite interestingly) been named to start at loosehead, where he will presumably have his hands full with Boland strongman Andries Human. Deon Carstens moves over to the tighthead side to take du Plessis’s place, while Skipper Badenhorst is at hooker. Alistair Hargreaves joins Albert van den Berg in a second row combination weakened by Muller’s withdrawal. Jacques Botes, Jean Deysel and Keegan Daniel will be the loose forwards again.

15. Stefan Terblanche
14. Chris Jordaan
13. Riaan Swanepoel
12. Bradley Barritt (Captain)
11. Waylon Murray
10. Frederic Michalak
9. Charl McLeod
8. Keegan Daniel
7. Jean Deysel
6. Jacques Botes
5. Alistair Hargreaves
4. Albert van den Berg
3. Deon Carstens
2. Skipper Badenhorst
1. Patric Cilliers

Replacements:
16. Craig Burden
17. Melusi Mthethwa
18. Steven Sykes
19. Skholiwe Ndlovu
20. Rory Kockott
21. Andries Strauss
22. Monty Dumond

  • Only thing that worries me is our second row in the scrum without Muller. Muller looks the same size as both Hargreaves and VDB put together. But otherwise Go Sharks!!!!!!!!!!

Nah the team on IOL is a PROBABLE one and was published at 7:24am this morning.

Sharks (probable): 15 Stefan Terblanche, 14 Chris Jordaan, 13 Riaan Swanepoel, 12 Bradley Barritt (capt), 11 Waylon Murray, 10 Fred Michalak, 9 Charl Macleod, 8 Keegan Daniel, 7 Jacques Botes, 6 Jean Deysel, 5 Alistair Hargreaves, 4 Albert van de Berg, 3 Pat Cilliers, 2 Skipper Badenhorst, 1 Deon Carstens.

Unless the actual team release from the Sharks is wrong then Mike got it right.
The official media release and 365 both have it at Pat at 1

  • To be serious though, I think it is a brilliant idea to take a big strong tighthead like Pat and have him get game time at loosehead. Pat has the size and strength to play at loosehead, and has already shown his ability on the tighthead side. This versatility is going to pay off in the long run. Pat is also very mobile, so some time at loosehead will let him shine in the loose. This would give the Sharks three props that can shine on either side, Deon, Jannie and Pat. I’ve talked before how important it is to have at least one and probably two props in every match day 22 that can cover both sides.

I’m a bit worried, though, in general. Deon is not the world’s strongest tight head and we’re already weakened without Muller there. I’d be happier with somebody heavier in Keegan’s place this week

  • @robdylan (Comment 45) : Deon will be just fine at TH against this opposition. He may not be the best TH around, but he never goes backward, on either side of the scrum (he’ll go down before backwards  )

The Sharks will be fine this week, and against this opposition, I think it is the perfect time to do this. Besides if it is clear the Sharks are getting monstered in the scrums after the first few, they can switch sides. I doubt it will happen though. They will miss Muller, but will be fine.

With CJ being an idiot, and Mujati not up to international standards yet, Carstens is the best SA prop that can play both sides effectively. He should be in the Bok squad.
