Lions number 8 Willem Alberts has paid a heavy price for the deft chip that set up the Lions’ first try against Free State last weekend. The burly loose forward went over badly on his ankle in the process and the resulting ligament damage will see him play no further rugby this season.
Injuries never come at a good time for any team, but at least for the Lions there is a ray of hope in that regular skipper Ernst Joubert is now fit to start and should slot seamlessly in for Alberts next week. The prospect of the duo playing in tandem, with Joubert shifting over to the side of the scrum, would have been a mouthwatering one for Lions fans, but that will now need to wait until next year’s Super 14. Franco van der Merwe will continue at 7 and has also been in fine form this season.
Fullback Louis Ludick also picked up an injury against the Cheetahs; he sustained a bicep injury that should keep him on the sidelines for a month. The Lions may well be forced to do without the services of Janno Vermaak as well, who appears set to face a disciplinary committee over the spear tackle which saw him yellow carded in the first half.
The Lions face the Valke away in their next outing.Tweet
