ABSA Currie Cup: Sharks (22) v Cheetahs (10) (F/T)

Written by Andre Bosch (KSA Shark ©)

Posted in :Cheetahs, Currie Cup, Sharks on 13 Sep 2008 at 14:00

The Sharks will hopefully only be good hosts at the after party this evening.

Will the Sharks delivery another scintilating performance and carry on where they left off last week?

Will the Cheetahs bounce back from their first home defeat in 2 years and show that they are STILL a hoodoo side for the Sharks?

The Cheetahs have it all to play for and, should things not bounce their way, could see themselves slip another position down the table.

Kick-Off in Durban at ABSA Park at 17:00 SA time.

Referee: Willie Roos
ARs: Phillip Bosch, Reuben Rossouw
TMO: Shaun Veldsman

Sharks: 15 Stefan Terblanche, 14 Odwa Ndungane, 13 Waylon Murray, 12 Francois Steyn, 11 JP Pietersen, 10 Frederic Michalak, 9 Ruan Pienaar, 8 Keegan Daniel, 7 Jean Deysel, 6 Jacques Botes, 5 Johann Muller (captain), 4 Steven Sykes, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Bismarck du Plessis, 1 Deon Carstens.
Replacements: 16 Skipper Badenhorst, 17 Patric Cilliers, 18 Tendai “Beast” Mtawarira, 19 Albert van den Berg, 20 Ryan Kankowski, 21 Rory Kockott, 22 Adrian Jacobs.

Cheetahs: 15 Bevin Fortuin, 14 Eddie Fredericks, 13 Robert Ebersohn, 12 Meyer Bosman, 11 Kabamba Floors, 10 Tewis de Bruyn, 9 Neil Powell, 8 Duane Vermeulen, 7 Juan Smith (captain), 6 Hendro Scholtz, 5 Barend Pieterse, 4 David de Villiers, 3 Kobus Calldo, 2 Adriaan Strauss, 1 Wian du Preez.
Replacements: 16 Richardt Strauss, 17 Coenie Oosthuizen, 18 Nico Breedt, 19 Heinrich Brüssow, 20 Jacques-Louis Potgieter, 21 JW Jonker, 22 Hendrik Meyer.

  • Tempers flared as Stade Francais consolidated their lead in the French Top 14 championship with a 19-13 victory at Toulon on Friday, with both teams playing the second half a man down.

Moments before half time a mass brawl broke out that had props Rodrigo Roncero of Stade Francais and David Banquet Toulon’s getting red cards from ref Jean-Pierre Matheu.

Toulon were already a man down as Jerry Collins had been sin-binned in the 31st minute for stamping, which must have had something to do with the new look of the Stade Francais jersey.

Although the fight started in the front row, and they received the immediate punishment, it was Toulon’s seasoned campaigner Norman Jordaan who landed a couple of the best haymakers, knocking down two big guys in two seconds, something not often seen from a little number nine.

It was an ugly scene of mass chaos though, as both teams gave it a full go with little pods of brawls branching off, making it virtually impossible for the officials to regain immediate control.

  • @robdylan (Comment 230) : Rob, I think the Michalak spear tackle deserved a yellow not red. He picked him up and dropped him, he didn’t drive him into the ground. As for the Bissie disallowed try, I think he was offside, and if not, he definitely had hands in the ruck.

There were several times I saw the Cheetah loosehead drop his bind or bind outside the tighthead’s arm, and the referee was on that side of the scrum. The loosehead should have been penalized for dropping his bind, and binding incorrectly.

  • @McLovin (Comment 239) :

Was watching the match live. It happened JUST after the Lions game. They don’t mess around in the french league it seems.

Now i know why Vicky came back to SA. he is a lover not an enforcer.

Would be keen to see the Owner of Toulon’s response to their loss though. There were rumblings last week that manager Tana Umaga was no longer safe in his job after one loss and one draw from three matches. Now he has two losses and one draw from three matches.

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 241) :

Agree on all three those decisions.

“live” I actually thought the Michalak tackle deserved nothing, but on seeing the replay I changed my mind.

it actually raizes a question in my main about the replay. In this instance the ref said he and the TJs agreed there was nothing wrong. he said something along the lines of “twee, drie van ons stem saam” Yet a few second later he decided to refer it. Are we getting to a position where the ref will let a player have the right to ask for a referal? I hope not.

But back to the replay. In normal speed the tackle looks fine even after watching it a second time. yet the replay makes it look dangerous as the replay removes the “momentum” from the tackle. Michalak had no option but to go over with the player.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 245) : This is a bit of a worrying factor. Like in the Super14, winning but not really performing as they should. Sometime or other it will catch up with you, usually in the play-offs. Let us hope this was only a stutter.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 243) : KSA, correct me if I am wrong, but I thought that momentum from the tackle is not taken into account in the laws. My understanding is that if a player does happen to pick a player up in such a way that his hips are above his head, it is the responsibility of the tackler to return them to the ground in a safe manner. I also thought it was generally accepted that if a tackler drops the player from this position, they get a yellow, if they drive them into the ground, it is a red.
