The Boland Cavaliers have opted to use ‘borrowed’ players from neighbours Western Province in a new loose forward combination for Saturday’s Currie Cup match against the Lions at Wellington.

Rugby 365 reports that Angelo Brinkhuis is the only loose forward that retains his place after last weekend’s 69-19 slaughter by the Blue Bulls at Loftus Versfeld.

Coach Deon Davids has decided to make use of two loan players from Western Province for this match.

David Hendricks, a former Boland player, comes in at No.8 at the expense of Whalied Heyns, while a former Boland Under-21 lock, Josh Strauss, comes in at No.7 flank.

Strauss is currently playing for NTK club in Parow.

At scrumhalf, Marnus Hugo is back in the starting line-up with livewire Danie van der Merwe starting on the bench after a solid performance against the Blue Bulls.

Lionel Cornelius, who has had a superb season at centre, remains on the replacement bench while centre Hein Myburgh also makes a welcome return after being injured in the Vodacom Cup competition.

Boland: 15 Justin Peach, 14 Alshaun Bock, 13 Piet van Zyl (captain), 12 Dewey Swartbooi, 11 Deon Scholtz, 10 Elgar Watts, 9 Marnus Hugo, 8 David Hendricks, 7 Josh Strauss, 6 Angelo Brinkhuis, 5 Brad Mockford, 4 Nico Esterhuyse, 3 Jacobie Adriaanse, 2 Harry Vermaas, 1 Janro van Niekerk.
Replacements: 16 Pieter Wium, 17 Andries Human, 18 Cecil Kemp, 19 Zolani Mofu, 20 Danie van der Merwe, 21 Hein Myburgh, 22 Lionel Cornelius.

  • Whats the story of the Boland okes from yesteryear being fabulous hosts, getting all the visitors diggesuip the night before and throwing a moerse jol only to punish them the next day on the field….or is that an urban legend?

  • That sounds like when koshuise play each other at intervarsity…LOL!

Happened to my team once, we played at Pretoria against a koshuis from tuks, the night before we partied like there was no tomorrow..I woke up with a huge hangover and slowly made my way to the field, thinking I would be the last player to pitch, and I was there first…all the other guys even worse than me!

When 7 of us were there I suggested we play sevens so long as a joke..and the guys thought I was serious, so we did! And then as each of our team members pitchesd up it became eights, nines, tens until we were eventually a full team…LOL!
