Currie Cup: Road to the play-offs

Then there were five. It is official, the Sharks and Blue Bulls have secured their Currie Cup Premier Division play-off places – while the Lions, Western Province and Cheetahs will contest the two remaining semifinal spots.

Rugby 365 reports that any mathematical prospect that Griquas had of sneaking into the Currie Cup play-offs were removed at the weekend when they lost 18-30 to Western Province.

They now join the Falcons and Boland Cavaliers in the basement battle – those three trying to avoid promotion relegation matches against the top two First Division teams.

For the next two weeks the Currie Cup spotlight will be split – the brighter part shining on the ‘big five’, as they try to secure home advantage in play-offs or simply just making it into the semis.

Some attention will also be afforded to the other three teams as they try to stay outside of the bottom two places – with Griquas holding a clear edge over the Falcons and Boland.

But onto the top end of the standings.

With just two weeks of league action remaining it is certain that the table-topping Sharks will finish first or second. Only the second-placed Bulls can still overtake them.

The Lions can still sneak into first place, but they can also still fall out of the race. They truly have their destiny in their own hands.

Western Province and the Cheetahs can, at best, finish third.

The Sharks have to secure eight points from their last two matches – against the Lions in Johannesburg on Saturday and Griquas at home – to ensure that they end top of the log for a home semifinal and possible home Final.

They are being chased by the Blue Bulls, who have Griquas away and the Falcons at home to gain 10 points and keep their chances alive to end top of the log.

The Lions have to get two points from their last two matches to secure their place in the play-offs and that is easier said than done. On Saturday they are at home to the Sharks and then they face Western Province at Newlands in what could be a crucial match for both sides. If the Lions do the unthinkable and get 10 points out of their last two matches they can overtake both the Bulls and Sharks.

The Cheetahs are away to the Falcons this weekend and at home to the Boland Cavaliers the following weekend. Ten points from the two matches are a must and then they could still end up square with WP, which will mean that points difference will then decide the semifinalist from these two.

The Cheetahs are 42 points behind WP in this respect, but have the Cavaliers at home and the Falcons away, while WP have to play the Cavaliers in what is always a difficult away game and the Lions in their final outing.

We look at each team’s road to the play-offs or promotion/relegation battle:

  • Surely if both the Lions and the Bulls can finish above them, the Sharks’ lowest possible position should be 3rd, not 2nd?

  • It’s going to be close. But I fear the Cheetahs will sneak into 4th. Simply because they should definitely get 10 from their next to matches and improve their points difference by quite a bit.

Plus WP are far from guaranteed 10 points from their last two. Seems our feline cousins are on course to burst the Province Currie Cup bubble.

  • @walter van transvaal.co.za (Comment 9) : and they should be aiming to win the next four. thats part of professionalism. but aiming and achieving are not always linked. i aim to be a multi millionaire. reality says otherwise. the lions don’t have the team to win four in a row. they will have to play sharks twice and wp and bulls if they want to win that trophy. the way they played on saturday they will be lucky to win two games.

We’ve beaten the Blue Bulls at Loftus, WP in JHB, we lost to the Sharks by 5 in Durbs after the ref disallowed a Jano Vermaak try under the posts that was a clear try…the Cheetahs remain our bogey team…since 1991 we’ve got the worst win ration against them of all the South African teams, but we probably won’t play them again this year.

A far weaker Lions them than the one they have this year beat us AT HOME last year. Also, neither of our victories against the Lions this year have been at all convincing and although I wouldn’t go so far as to say the ref cheated when we played them in Durban, we were certainly very lucky to emerge with a win from that encounter because we were KAK. Even at full strength in the Super 14 we struggled to beat them…

    Let’s just keep our perspective

But no shot being taken at any team, I think they all are starting to slow down as to minimize the chances of injuries.

The conditions were really poor, they took the kickoffs from about the 10 meter line because the halfwayline was water logged. Most of the one half of the field was a mud bath…I seriously think SA Rugby must sort these guys out…we can’t expect players to play in conditions like those.

Perhaps Boland will be relegated to the B section next year, and then the problem goes away by itself.

the sharks have a score to settle on saturday
also its a new day new game and only problem for the lions is this

its a matter of 17 players that were out either with boks , or injured when we met the lions earlier in the trny

and yes walter we were lucky mate , unfortunately those 17 players are all back now

well make it 18 and add john smit
rob trust me plums has got the team playing as a team and they very serious about this trophy , they very hungry

  • look, it’s no secret that Rose is our worst defender, so if I had to work out a gameplan against us, I would try and exploit that…and it also depends on who we pick at 12, one of our guys at 12 is also not that big on tackling, so attack 10 and 12. (If he plays). If it’s the other 12, he can tackle so do something else. Also, will Jaque Fourie start or not…the rest will be pretty even…both teams scrum well and are good in the line-outs and loosies.

Naude was on the bench against Boland but Loffie didn’t use him. In fact, it’s one of the big problems I have with Loffie, he doesn’t seem to believe that you should play a match with the squad of 22, he insist on using 15.

In the Bulls game we won he only used one reserve (a prop) and we seriously ran out of steam in the last 15 mins of that match.

Against Boland he used 3 reserves (prop, and 2 backs)

Our current starting locks are Van Zyl and Franco van der Merwe, with Senekal and Mostert out injured.
