Details are sketchy at this stage, but it appears as though the latest crew of Sharks reserves to fly the coop may not have left for good.
Frank Wagenstroom and Thabo Mamojele have both turned out for the Valke in recent weeks, sparking concerns that the youngsters had turned their backs on the Durban union and made the East Rand their new home, much as hooker Jody Jennker did a few months ago. Sharksworld has asked the Sharks to confirm whether the players have in fact been released, or whether they are merely on loan. Our request is currently on Rudi Straueli’s desk and we’ll give you the official answer as soon as we have it.
Certain developments over the weekend, though, have removed all doubt. Mamojele and Wagenstroom are both still contracted by the Sharks and it was due to this fact that both were pulled from the Valke team to face the Sharks on Saturday. In Mamojele’s case, he was allowed to sit on the bench in order that he might accumulate enough “regular season” caps for the Valke to be eligible for the play-offs. There is a ruling in place that any player who has represented a team in less than three round-robin games may not then be selected in the play-offs. One would assume that in the case of the Valke, this would apply to the relegation matches rather than the semi-finals! Wagenstroom gained his first cap against WP, which is why he could afford to sit out the Sharks match.
All indications are that both Wagenstroom and Mamojele will be back with the Sharks in time for next year’s Super 14 and one would hope that the experience gained in playing for the Valke will help them to secure more regular game time in the black and white.
The news is not as good regarding flyhalf-cum-fullback Scott Spedding. Once rated a really bright star on the horizon, the former St Johns boy (and child prodigy) never really made it at the Sharks, battling to even tie down a regular spot in the Wildebeest team this year. Spedding has left Durban and is now with French outfit Brive. More details on that as and when we get them.Tweet
