One change for WP

The inclusion of Bolla Conradie at scrumhalf in place of fellow Springbok Ricky Januarie is the only change to the Vodacom Western Province team for Saturday’s crucial Absa Currie Cup match against the Boland Kavaliers at Boland Stadium in Wellington.

Kick-off is at 15:00.

The Official Western Province Website reports that Januarie is not available because he is getting married in Johannesburg on Saturday. This gives the experienced Conradie a valuable start. The young Dewaldt Duvenhage will be on the substitutes’ bench against his former team-mates.

Coach Allister Coetzee on Wednesday said he was glad to fall back on the talents of the veteran Conradie. “It is good to give Bolla a chance again. It is a golden opportunity for him. We all know what a quality player he is. It is good to replace on Springbok with another and that is a position every coach wants to be in.”

At lock Adriaan Fondse, who started in last weekend’s win against Griquas, is bracketed with AJ Venter. Fondse is suffering from a knock he took against Griquas and a final decision about his participation in the game will be made at a later stage.

Pieter Louw will come in on the bench in case Fondse has to withdraw.

After his good showing against Griquas, that earned him praise from captain Jean de Villiers, young Deon Fourie retains his place at hooker ahead of Springbok Schalk Brits. Brits had to withdraw from the team at captain’s practice last Thursday when a knock against the chest still bothered him. This week he will be on the bench.

Springbok prop Brian Mujati, who didn’t play against Griquas due to a bicep injury, is still out injured and in his absence young JC Kritzinger gets more of a chance to impress. The WP under-21 prop started against the Blue Bulls and did really well and last weekend against Griquas he again more than held his own.

“Brian is definitely not available. I would definitely not play a guy who is injured and that is part of my rest program for the Boks,” commented Coetzee.

He added: “It is great to see how Wicus Blaauw and JC made big strides in the right direction in the Currie Cup thus far. They have really done well with the exposure they had this season.”

So Mujati would have been rested if he wasn’t injured then?

  • Januarie couldn’t get married in the off-season? Crikey man. Even I planned my wedding for the summer…

I guess his team mates didn’t make the guest list?
