In the backline, there are no changes to the outfit that played against the Lions.

  • That’s uh  a pretty good team.
    Plum means business.
Bummed about Barrit and Waylon still on the bench. I thought Steyn was clueless and Adi was muscled off the ball last week.
    Oh well…

the team can only benifit from vonsistent selections
good thing john smit is starting as he needs game time bad and this will help
bismark is on form so no doubts about him

deysel seemed a bit cripple after the lions so i think a good thing he starts off the bench

griquas dont have very tall line out jumpers so i agree with syskes starting which will add a little more grunt

  • What has impressed me this season is how effective a lineout option Keegan has become. I suppose he is relatively easy to lift, being slightly built, but I am sure he has an excellent vertical jump since he always seems to get well above the opposition. As well as Bissie has been playing his lineout throws are still terrible. Can’t blame the jumpers because he is simply missing them. Smit’s lineouts have always been head and shoulders better than Bissie. Great team, although lacking a bit of bulk in the backrow, but resting Deysel on the bench is probably a good idea.

  • Just wondering if Botes does not need a break. He was mostly invisible on Saturday, which is really unusual for him, that red scrum cap always pops up around the ball, but not against the Lions. I just wish he would play more to the ground. Clearly he is more present around the ball than any other opensider in SA, but he does not play well on the ground. With his superb ability to get to the ball first (early), I just feel he would be an incredible fetcher if he would just play to the ground more.

As we go into the final pool match of the Absa Currie Cup, the Sharks can look back on a number of firsts this season, record-breaking events that bring smiles rather than frowns. These include their first win over the Free State Cheetahs since 2003, and the even bigger record that extended back 12 years, beating the Lions away from home.

The Sharks managed to kill off another bogey when they beat the Lions at Coca-Cola Park on Saturday, their first win in Johannesburg in the Absa Currie Cup since 1996, ironically, the last year they won the tournament. For those of us who enjoy stats, numbers and records, this augers well for the remainder of the tournament.

But before we open the Champagne, let’s not forget that a Griquas side hoping to end their season on a high lies in wait before the semi-finals. They have enjoyed their giant-killing antics over the years as one of the smaller unions who love nothing better than bringing down a side known as one of the “Top Five” and the Sharks most certainly will not go into Saturday’s game at The Absa Stadium Durban underestimating the team from Kimberley.

With so much riding on the result of the game and with their destiny firmly in their own hands as they look to achieve their goal of remaining at the top of the log, the Sharks have attached a huge amount of importance to this game and one thing you can be sure of: There will be absolutely no complacency.

Captain Johann Muller has sent out an earnest plea to fans to get down to the stadium in support of the Sharks. A wonderful game of exciting rugby is expected and this is sure to be a game you don’t want to miss!
    Sharks Forever!

Agreed he has played every game this season… ‘and’ he is the turnover king… come on, take a luke at luke… he doesn’t turnover much ball unless it’s off his own wings… Botes could do with a rest!

  • @bryce_in_oz (Comment 31) : Yoiks Bryce, who brought loooook into this? I don’t rate him much, so not a good comparison to Botes. Now Baywatch is a fetcher of note, and plays much better than Botes to the ground. Botes is around the ball even more than Baywatch, but just does not seem to turn the ball over like Batwatch does.

  • @CapeShark (Comment 1) :

Not many get his work rate… only just been able to see the game yesterday arvo, but after reading the SW punter’s crits on the game beforehand certainly gives one something to watch for… the guy is everywhere on defence… covering his tackle and then getting back to make his team-mates missed tackles over and over!

How about that JPP… love it when someone proves me wrong… he’s gone from heart-attack material (when the ball is kicked his way) to slippery attacker that’s comfortable under the high-ball and rucks, mauls and turns ball over at the tackle zone with ease… awesome stuff!

IMO not getting ball all season this last S14 had a positive impact on the ‘other’ aspects of his game…

I’m very comfortable with the fact we (Boks) have JPP and Habana on the wings!
