Guys – we’ve seen a lot of new registrations here in the last few weeks. It’s great to have so many new members here and we love the way our little community is growing. Let’s take a little time to get to know one another…

Let’s use this a general introduction and getting-to-know-one-another thread. If you’re new, write a short comment telling us who you are, where you come from and how you found the site… Also, who do you support and why and what is it that you love about rugby.

Even those of us who’ve been around for a while should jump in and let all of us know a little bit more about themselves.

Have fun!

  • well, where should I start?

I’m Rob… born in Pretoria almost 31 years ago. Moved to Durban for a bit, then back to Pretoria, then to Dundee in Northern Natal, where we stayed for 8 years, then to the UK for a year, then back to Pretoria, then to Joburg after varsity, then finally to the UK 18 months ago.

Started taking rugby seriously around the time of the 1990 CC win and have been a rabid Sharks fan ever since. There has only ever been one team for me and I live and die by their results… I would support the Sharks against the Springboks (in fact, I did, in 1995… we almost won as well).

I didn’t so much “find” this site as “start” it…

Ice….born in NW province, Grew up in NW province…travelled after that..

How my love for rugby started..my Dad was playing for Vaal Reefs (scrummy) back in the days, so we (two girls), grew up next to the ball field and slept under the tables at the “rugby onthaal”.. Even today old players talks about the way my (very little dad) could dive over a scrum and score a try…he played with the likes of Potjie Gericke / Klippies Kritzinger – dont know if any rings a bell..

3 families getting together everyweekend..when rugby came on, all the kids were handed a (knitted) rugby jersey and HAD to watch the rugby! (I was about 4 then)..all were TVL and WP supporters, so I shouted for WP as I was Dad;s tomboy and he (still) shouts for WP..(oh..the shame!! )

Being a typical teenager…the looks and rebelious ways of bad Boy James Small was what first atracted me to Natal rugby as well as the annual holidays on the South Coast..always longing to be a Natal Surfer Girl!

Since then it was one way for me..started to get into the game and not only into the players.. and has not looked back.

I have to admit…the days of Kevin Putt in charge got me to miss a few games…but thank goodness that was short lived!!

    And here I am…the ONE…The Only…ICCCCCCEEEEEE Sharks Supporter!!

  • Hi I am Maria aka Sharksmad, was born in Cagliari, Sardinia (ITaly for who don’t know) I grew up watching Soccer and Formula 1! We moved to JHB when I was 10 going onto 11 and still watched Soccer. Started follwoing rugby but not seriously in 1990 while still living in JHB and I started “suporting” the Natal Banana Boys as they went into that final as underdogs, and made Naas the Haas Daas eat his words (I remember he nearly chocked on them)But I used to watch a match in a while. In 1995 my Husband literally forced me to sit and watch the WC and in one of the games I forget which the penny dropped and I actually understood what the game was all about and understanding the rules and roles of the players and I switched my allegiance from the round ball to the oval ball. By the end of the WC I was in love with Andre Joubert and so the Sport and the Sharks became my undying passion through thick and thin (Read Putt) My husband regrets the monster he has created ’cause now the whole household revolves around rugby, and he has decided he hates the sport after all, men are peverse

  • haha love these stories! I was born in Joburg but have lived in KZN since I was 3. Used to live down in Sheptone but have been all over the place. So I grew up with the Sharks, although my family wasn’t overly into rugby – or I didn’t really understand it. Went to boarding school in the Midlands though, and rugby is law. But it was only after I left school that I actually got into the sport. Now rugby is pretty-much an obsession – the biggest thing I miss, now that I’ve been forced to Cape Town, is my season ticket.

The Sharks is truly the only institution I give my all to, and like Rob said, I support them more formally than the Springboks. Especially given the fact that the Springboks only show their potential when filled with Sharks (RWC 07?), so at times like these my support wanes.

I have booked my ticket for the CC final, and I hope to destory the Lions on saturday, because we can. And then I want to win the CC with class, and not by the ref or by the rub of the green.

Oh ya, this site is awesome! Thanks Rob!

Sauce – Born in Cape Town and struggles to understand why people live in the rest of South Africa, likes gardening, long walks on the beach and growing boom. The god father of flame wars and quart bottles of beer.

I aspire to have a zero carbon foot print and when i grow up i want to be just like PJLD without the mags.

  • Hi all!!
I’m probably the “Old Lady” of this site (aka Mama Shark)
Born in Port Shepstone (Frisbee?) to a sports mad family BUT it was all soccer, cricket, tennis & eventually, when we went to live in Ixopo, hockey! Rugby was, not quite but almost, an unused word in our household!
Went to Pmb. Girls’ High with a Skonk Nicholson’s daughter, first person who ever spoke to me about rugby…watched College play but was never interested until in the mid 60′s I met Tommy Bedford, and the late Wally Sharratt, at Varsity (UN). Used to watch a lot of Varsity games when my hockey committments allowed.
Followed the Natal Teams’ progress over the years & proud to say my brother-in-law was one of those wonderful supporters that got things going during the bleak time of the “B” section….the “powers that were” really did Natal a favour…got the strongest support base for a rugby team, any where in the World, going….
This is turning into an essay  but I have a lot of memories….
I won’t bore you….lets just say Natal, Coastal Sharks, Natal Sharks, The Sharks, been through it all and loved every minute of it….we have realy had some wonderful players over the years & have some truely
great players now….love them all
Oh yes, a guy from Ham Chutney got me involved here

Started supporting the Sharks back in 1990, when my dad introduced me to rugby. Never been much of a player (was a featherlight wing, but look like a prop now), but have followed the Sharks faithfully ever since that first season.

I come here cos of the free beer and the hot chicks.

  • Bob works hard at the plant and spends two nights each week bowling and

plays golf every Saturday. His wife thinks he’s pushing himself too hard,

so for his birthday she takes him to a local strip club. The doorman at the
club greets them and says, ‘Hey, Bob! How ya doin?’ His wife is puzzled
and asks if he’s been to this club before. ‘Oh no, ‘ says Bob. ‘He’s on my

    bowling team.’

When they are seated, a waitress asks Bob if he’d like his
usual and brings over a Budweiser. His wife is becoming increasingly

uncomfortable and says, ‘How did she know that you drink Budweiser?’ I

recognize her, she’s the waitress from the golf club. I always have a Bud at
the end of the first nine holes, honey.’ A stripper then comes over to their

table, throws her arms around Bob, starts to rub herself all over him and
says, ‘Hi Bobby. Want your usual table dance, big boy?’ Bob’s wife, now

furious, grabs her purse and storms out of the club. Bob follows and spots

her getting into a cab. Before she can slam the door, he jumps in beside

her. Bob tries desperately to explain how the stripper must have mistaken

him for someone else, but his wife is having none of it. She is screaming at

him at the top of her lungs, calling him every four-letter word in the
book. The cabby turns around and says, ‘Geez Bob, you picked up a real bitch
    this time.’

  • Billy. Schooled at some of the most rugby focused schools in the country (Queens College and Dale) Studied in DBN and worked in a restaurant frequented by sharks players. Started barter system comprising free food/ coffee for sharks tickets. Have been a completely mental Sharks supporter. Cry when they lose and go completely off the rails and manic when they win. My general state of mind is directly influenced by the Sharks last game. Not terribly healthy but better than being boring. Live in JHB as the director of a few salt mines in Advertising and marketing. Married, Just cracked 30 and have a 2 year old Shark supporting daughter.

  • Hi there, no names no pack drill, know too many people, owe too many favours and have made name far too many times to mention. I would hate somebody on this site to track me down!
I am a bullet from the old days. Schooled just West of Durban in a village called Westville when men were men and woman knew the difference!
I played my first big game of Rugby in 1971 for Durban South Rugby Union on KP as a curtain raiser to John Pullen’s English team when they played Natal. I used the same change room as my heroes.. Terry Basson, Tommy Bedford and Stan Holmes to name but 3.
Durban Varsity, then S.A. Weermag u20’s after that Club rugby at Collegians and finally Rovers. Coached Junior Rugby before immigrating to Joburg.
I have not missed a Shark final since 1986 (WP at Newlands) Sharks before country and not ashamed of that statement.
Rob I enjoy your site, albeit it little too cosy and amiable for me. I was a tight head prop, and a member of the Twighlight zone.

started supporting the sharks in 90, mostly just to piss everyone in randfontein off. watched THAT cc final on a tiny portable tv while camping with about 7 million bulls supporters at what is now oppikoppi (i shit u not). i watched the whole game with 1 eye, literally, as i broke my one glasses lens about an hour before the game. i still dream about that 10 point try…..

Rob started this site, and did all he could to keep the information from me to be sure I didn’t follow him over. Fortunately for me, not for Rob, I found the site anyway (and believe me it wasn’t easy!). I was born in Durban, and supported the Banana Boys through the very worst, and this included supporting the only two Boks playing for them (Tommy Bedford and Piston Van Wyk). I never get to watch any of the Currie Cup semis and finals live because I race sailboats on Saturdays on the Chesapeake Bay and beyond.

  • Hi my name is Letgo and I’m an addict…

Rugby and the Sharks is seriously the only things I want in my live, I think if my parents could they would organize some kind of intervention. Although I talk so much about this stuff, sometimes I think it doesn’t even bother them…denial :?:

I lived in a small town Riebeeckstad near Welkom, for the first 13 years of my life.(Welkom is the second biggest city in the Free State, but still a really small city) Surprisingly my mom is the big rugby fan in our family, but since she moved around so much in her live she supported almost every team in South Africa, but never the Sharks. For a very long time it was just the Cheetahs, but I never agreed with that idea.

When my brother played rugby my mom would run on the sideline screaming out orders and before long I was doing exactly the same thing. I can’t remember a time in my life that I did not love rugby. I could never understand girls of my age, they loved dolls and shopping and I just wanted to play rugby with my brothers in our backyard.

I always liked the Sharks, I think it might be because Andre Joubert and James Small were my brother’s favorite players, he’s five years older than I am, so everything he likes were really cool for me. It seemed like he supported the Sharks although the men in my family aren’t really rugby crazy, so when the guys in black and white played I always wanted them to win.
Once the Sharks came to Welkom to play the Griffons in a warm-up match, my sister and I were the only people there who shouted our lungs out, and the only people who supported the Sharks. I met Andre Joubert, Keven Putt, Henry Honiball, Cabous van der Westhuizen and Gavin Lawless that day and since then I was completely hooked to Sharks rugby. I even got angry when my Mom or Dad supported other teams against the Sharks, especially because they always just decided who they were going to support just before the game.

Here’s the very sad part, and try not to be to hard on me. Joost van der Westhuizen has always been my favorite player, far above all the rest, so when he came onto the field I always wanted him and his team to do do well. So…basically, for a very long time, as long as Joost played for the Bulls, I wanted them to… My first taste of a Currie Cup trophy was in 1998 when Joost was Captain of the Bulls. I never actually supported the team and when they played the Sharks I was torn between Joost and the Sharks, but I still feel very weird about that since they are the enemy now.

We moved toLa Lucia, Durban in 2000 and I convinced my parents to buy season tickets and converted them to full on Sharks supporters. So for six years I went to every single game at the Stadium then in 2005 I moved to Pretoria with my sister to study and that’s where I found my big hate for the Bulls, Loftus is the worse place on earth. I had tolerance for this team, because of Joost and because I had no previous really bad experiences with them, but I’m really sorry, Loftus and the very stupid people sitting around me created something that made the Bulls very hard to like. My despise for the Bulls is very personal, but that is a story for another day. In 2007 light blue even sometimes the sky makes me a little nauseas.

Even though I am female, I am yet to meat anyone who loves rugby as much as I do. (The world wide web does not count) I studied sport coaching and as soon as I am done traveling or run out of money or ideas to travel I will start coaching at school level, hopefully rugby and hopefully that will lead to bigger things.

I came to this site because someone caused the official Sharks site’s blog to be closes, but I like Sharksworld more in anyway.

@billy (Comment 56) : My mood is definitely also established by how the Sharks are playing.

  • Hours behind as usual..damn timezones

I’m Milissa or Mo (no clue when/where that one came about). I’m in the US, new jersey to be specific. Fell into rugby because of my insatiable curiosity, country hopped via the sport from Ireland to France to SA. Overall now I support 5 teams (Toulouse, France, Ireland, Sharks & Boks) so WCs are interesting for me. I feel that I was cheated last year because I would have given my left arm to see the Boks and France in the final..I really don’t like the English team I swear they are the only team on the planet whose play makes me want to take a nap.

Recently married (2 months next Thursday!) I’m rather fond of making weekend trips to SA for Sharks games and plan on being in town for the final.

@Milissa (Comment 145) : Thanks for the ideas Mo, unfortunately the software that does the blocking at work, gets a sniff of something they don’t like and they block the entire URL. If any location on a site says it is a proxy site, they block everything from them. Sucks really, but I am spending a lot of time at a contractor site now, and I can get here from there. So all is not lost. By the way, very late congrats on the marriage!

  • Rather late than never???

Silver Fox, from Upington in the North Western Cape or the Kalahari. My dear NWK in those day’s tried their best and I always supported them as far as local games went.

After a brief stint as a Lion supporter, I found a lot of things mainly in their administration that stank to the high heavens. At the same time my twin boys moved with their mother to Pinetown, my hero then Wahl Bartmann moved to the Sharks after being treated like trash by Transvaal.

Along followed my support which have ever since been at the Sharks. But by coming in from the dark maybe enabled me to stay more unbiased as far as rugby is concerned.

Not less passionate, only able to enjoy good qualities from other players as well.

  • Always been into the colonial sports – rugby anc cricket.
Fortunately cricket bores me and so always leant over to rugby since the latter parts of high school.

Still play from time to time, despite numerous on-field and off-field injuries and have very few ligaments left intact in my body.
Love the game and struggle to stay away.

I’m more of a grassroots rugby fan than a pro fan. Work committments unfortuantely leave me frightfully short of time to be as involved in club rugby as I was in the past.

  • Bonjour tous le monde, I am Le Req. Born & bred in the Natal North Coast, amongst all the sugar cane. Started following rugby thru watching our local club side with my dad (there wasn’t much to do in our parts). Followed the Sharks since Henry Coxwell was our first choice pivot – 1988 / 1989 – yes, we were still sh!t so it was club before province for moi. But then occurred the miracle of 1990, when Naas truly did slip on his ass & after which every Sharks supporting family went & bought that 100 year centernary video.

Best final – 1995 vs WP
Best import – Thierry Lacroix (Michalak stills needs to fill those boots)
Best individual performance – Flawless Lawless vs Otago, 1997

Now faced with the scarry prospect of going through my entire 20′s without the Sharks having won a trophy…. let’s hope the Sharks put that one to rest over the next 3 weeks!

  • Graced Jo’burg with my presence 35 years ago at Milpark hospital.Promptly left SA and lived in Switzerland and Mexico for the next 10 years.Returned to SA for the next 18 years.Have always supported the Lions since the days of Jannie Breedt and Francois Pienaar.

There are times I wish I had jumped ship earlier and supported another team..here I am still blindly believeing we may actually win something one day.
Worked for the United Nations in Holland for 6 years and now spend most of my time in sunny Baghdad.

I played inside center during high school and moved to the wing during my club playing days.If my passion for supporting rugby translated into complete knowledge of the game I would have led the Lions to loads of trophys

Have been known to get drunk and loud at games and even asked to leave as I was scaring the children at the bar..

I can still remember sitting at Ruacana (SWA) and listening to the fact that we had beaten the Free State in the Curry Cup Semis even though we were in the B Section. Its the fact that we always played attractive rugby that made me proud of being a Natalian, even if we lost. I am Sammy fish face aka Salmonoid, born and schooled in Pietermaritzburg, studdied in Durban and have worked and lived in various places in this amazing country. Am currently in the Western Cape. My first rugby re-collection is of scoring a try in my first game in grade 2, thereafter tries were few and far between. I am one of those that never missed a home game played in Durban or Pietermaritzburg (Woodburn) in the B section days of the early – mid 80′s.

  • Hi I’m Richard Graham Southey – born Sandton JHB almost 30 years ago, like Rob I lived in Dundee for much of my school life, schooled in PMB and been rugby mad since I can remember, my first ever game was a sold out Currie Cup final between Province and Transvaal in a packed Ellis Park in the late 80′s and through our new found Natal connection supported Craig Jameson’s Natal. I played centre for most my life, and still do when not to busy, as Andre Snyman was a Dundee High School legend, I had the honour of being coached by him, but sadly like my schooldays hero, I too was injury prone and missed out on higher honours due to knee. I love rugby, I breathe rugby – I love The Sharks and sommer love you guys too!

Which basically means Queens are the men and Dale are the girls. How do you know about that?? Both Great schools and wonderful rivalry, together with Selborne down in slum town (EL)
Right introduction I am Whindy, born in Malawi, grew up in Northern Rhodesia now Zambia., then educated in Queenstown at the greatest school ever, Queens College. Then went onto varsity at Stellenbosch, Folks lived in JHB , while at school hence my love for the Transvaal and now Lions. Lived in JHB all my adult life and have stayed loyal to the Lions through the good and bad times, from as long ago as 1972 when Gerald Bosch was my hero. Have since moved to Abu Dhabi where I have been living for the last 3 years, while building an aluminium smelter. However that contract is finished and I will be returning to SA at the end of May to live a more normal existence which I cannot wait to do. A braai is going to be so good , pity I am missing the sharks world get together.
Why Sharksworld rather than a lions site, well I really enjoy the folk on this site they have a decent knowledge of rugby and speak sense, most of the time, Plus I met Rob playing touch rugby and he and some other loyal members became good mates.

  • Hey, didn’t know this thread existed. Very interesting to read eveyone’s blurbs! So let me do mine. Excuse the length, but I have a couple of (hopefully) interesting stories in between. So if you can stay awake:

Born in Addington Hospital 44 years ago and lived in Toti until I was 6. Went to Kuswag Laerskool for my first year, then we moved to Salt Rock on the North Coast. Went to Umhlali Primary and then Stanger High. I learned to love rugby and Natal from my dad, who was a total Natal Rugby fanatic and also a Natal Ref. We hardly ever missed a game at King’s Park and all us lighties used to sit next to the tunnel on the concrete slabs so were always close to the action and players. Just before the end of the game we would make our way over to the corner to steal the corner flag as a momento.

After games, when the party began, I used to take the day’s match program and hunt down players of both sides for autographs. In 1980 I got every last one of the British Lions and Natal teams to sign next to their player profile in that program.* It took me the whole night and by the time I got a hold of the locks Maurice Colclough and Allan Martin they were pretty pissed ;-) In a huge coincidence (and years later), we went for lunch at one of my sister’s friends in Joburg. When her husband introduced himself I realised it was Maurice Colclough. We had a great chat about the tour and rugby in general and many bottles of wine.  They moved back to England when he was diagnosed with brain cancer. Sadly, he didn’t survive the tumour  .

After school I went to varsity in Snor City and also did my National Service there in the Air Force. On the troop train from Durban to Pretoria we were 4 in a sleeping compartment: David Maher, Sean Glover, Joel Stransky and me. For dinner on the train we got the most horrible stuff to eat and a plastic cup of gravy to presumable make it edible. Stransky was so disgusted that he opened the train window and chucked it out. Everything blew straight back and covered him and Glover in greasy brown gravy. We all ended up in the same bungalow and played some rugby together in basics – all Natal boytjies together. The Air Force is nice that way  .

I did lots of things and lived in lots of places from Graskop to Cape Town but ended up in Snor City for love. Which is how I got involved wif ze Germans and how we decided 3 years ago to make a move to Germany and how I am now supporting and swearing at the Sharks from afar.

    * At some stage a gave all my rugby scrapbooks and signed programs to my younger brother. Now they’re gone.

  • Thought I would deliver my 2 cents worth as being a newbie on the site.

Hi my name is Viking. Born and raised in JHB where I attended St Stithians College where I was commonly referred to as a “Dutchman” hence I is Afrikaans. Played 56 club rugby at school. Went on to study engineering at Tuks while staying in Mopanie residence where I also played young guns rugby.

Living back in JHB again with my wife and 6 week old Sharks supporter who is not a happy camper at the moment. I keep on telling him the Sharks will get better  Love the Sharks, Love rugby and luckily for me my wife loves them too. Some common ground is good for the relationship. Sometimes it I feel that my friends must think I am shallow or a social outcast as all I can do is talk rugby with them.

Thankfully I found Sharksworld where I can find likeminded people like you guys. Thanks for that.

I didn’t last long. Got kicked out for laughing at the “koshuis huislied”, which was enscribed on a piece of wood (presumably from a taaibos tree) when I was actually laughing at the sign company’s name: Kraut Signs. They didn’t believe me and expelled me for disrespecting the “values and traditions” of the koshuis.

My parents weren’t too chuffed with me bringing “skande” on the family, but it was a blessing – daily life was waaaayy better

  • Born and raised in Newcastle (Natal). Was a daily at Tuks – engineering. Actually work with Viking at this stage.

Played every position with double digits on the jersey, liked 12 best though. You get more opportunities to brutalise your opponents there

Oh, discovered rugby actually due to those collectible cards that came onto the scene in the early nineties. Made Tennis seem boring.

Today I would watch every game on offer if I could – heineken cup, super rugby, varsity cup… and off course NFL too. Just a tad busy with my studies so for the next 18 months I’ll have to cut back…

Must say that is was one hell of a jol at varsity. Koshuis rugby was also some of the most bruising rugby you could ever play. Good players mixed with midiocre players (myself included) is a recipy for disaster. The banter next to the field with your whole res standing there was also awesome.

  • Let me tell you guys about my short rugby career. I grew up in Rustenburg and went to school at Highschool Rustenburg, there I played wing a bit and after school I went to play for Impala Rugby club. As I said I played wing then I was pretty skinny, 1.85 meters weighing in at about 75kg’s. One game comes to mind. The Pukke came to Rtb to play against us and in the week during training our coach told us we are short on locks I happily agreed to play lock. Biggest mistake to put my skinny body into that scrum against the Pukke! Scrumming with my Blades also didn’t help much. Felt like I was only sliding backwards. But it was a lot of fun. Anyway I stopped the rugby completely when I got North West colours in Action Cricket.

  • Well ain’t this thread just a bucket o’ fun? Kudos to whoever unearthed this from the archives!

    So, the essential info:

Owing to an unfortunate incident involving a faulty prophylactic and a time machine, I will only be born in 312 years from now. So if any of you were worried that the world will end in 2012, this should put your minds at ease. I have been occupying this current timeline for 38 years now, of which most of it was spent in KZN, the earlier parts in the picturesque town of Eshowe, and the most recent 16 years or so in Newcastle, a town that all Capetonians would aspire to live in, if only they knew of it’s existence. Sadly, this blissful stay in the magic province was interrupted by a 5 year sojourn to Pretoria, an experience which has scarred me irreparably (as you can see from my photo).

By day I masquerade as a productive, normal member of society, and by night I drop the productive part. Other than the obvious Sharks fetish, my interests are wine (and whisky, in fact, especially whisky) women (my wife and daughter) and song (provided it’s not my own singing, and not accompanied by some excruciatingly gratuitous guitar solo-ing).

The only possible way for my life could improve would be to die, reincarnate as myself, and then experience it all overe again for a second time.

My name is Pierre and the sharks prompted me to take up drinking.

Like Sauce I`m fiercely protective of Cape Town, just not their rugby side.

For reasons I don`t really understand I am sometimes accused of being overly critical, I think I`m just too passionate a sharks supporter. When something goes wrong I want it fixed yesterday!

  • @Viking (Comment 330) : Start saving now its ridiculous what you have to pay!! To get a decent education now a days!! Sent My Kids to Boys High in Pretoria and was very happy with what they got and also how they turned out. Ironically they would have been 4 generation at Queens, but felt I would rather be part of their lives than send them so far away and never even see them play sport. Was a good decision even though it did not go down well with the family!!

  • @Ice (Comment 335) : That could be it. They would then have been in their 3rd year. But, as you said, it was a small (and rambunctious) group.

We had one seriously funny thing happen. As you know, after a play has run its course there is a huge party after the final show. At one of these afterparties a student had brought along a heavily spiked “choklit zol koek” for everyone to enjoy.

Nana’s mom is a surgeon and regularly used to come and watch the drama students’ plays. On this occassion she decided to stay for the afterparty as well and started tucking into the cake. Nobody could stop her, because it would have meant owning up.

After a while she excused herself. We tried to get her to stay, but she had an appointment – for a surgery at HF Verwoerd! Apparently everyone involved made it through in one piece.

The funny thing is he was not the best centre at school they had a guy Gary Loest played free state u20 and then went onto play EP, big mistake should have gone to a bigger province. Selborne produced the Andrew cousins, just a pity there is nowhere for these kids to go except away. Maybe the kings will develop, and maybe pigs will fly!!

  • Great thread..it’s distracted me for the past 10 minutes and I haven’t seen it before.

A bit about me and I’ll try be brief. Born in Durban and my Dad is a sports fanatic who took me to every sporting event from when I was a tiny baby. My Mom said that I would sleep on his lap and he’d get so engrossed in the game that he would forget I was on his lap and I’d end up flying a few rows  Perhaps that’s why I have all these scars on my head.

Anyway my Dad was a very good sportsman, played Natal and SA schools cricket and for Durban Collegians rugby and is a MEGA Sharks supporter. I don’t think he’s missed a home rugby game for around 35 years. We used to go to all the games home and away when Natal were in the B section up until I was 9 years old. I then went to boarding school……DALE College (for Whindy…it’s DALE AMADODA) and I played rugby for 8 years. Loved it.

Continued to support Natal (as they were then) with an absolute passion and as they were still in the B section used to receive serious abuse, not to mention that being in the E.Cape I was one of the only Natal supporters around. However I’m one of those very patriotic type of guys that has a bond with my team that can never ever be broken…so took the stick and gave as good as I got back. With Border being a very minor union, most of the guys were Wee Pee supporters….hence my absolute loathing of Wee Pee to this very day!!

Moved back to Durban when I finished school and bought a season ticket with my Dad. Didn’t miss a game until 1998 when I got a secondment to the USA to work. The moved to the UK later that year and am still here. Planning on moving back to Durban to live later this year though….so can’t wait!

I have 3 children….2 daughters and a son and have brought them up to be Sharks supporters. The first song I taught them was “we are black, we are white” and if I’m in a bad mood on a Sat the first question they ask me is “Dad, did the Sharks lose?”

My daughters are 5 and 4 and my son is 1 and I can’t wait to take them to their first game at Kings Park…there will be 3 generations of us!

I’ve seen some amazing players over the years and my favourite side was the early 90′s with Thomson and Muir in the centres, Tony Watson on the wing, Steve Atherton and Vleis as locks etc.

Used to love Hugh Reece Edwards. Man..I could go on forever…..

  • @Whindy (Comment 363) : Funnily enough I just read some posts about Gary Loest last week. I vaguely remember the name from provincial rugby but not the face. Rem. EP weren’t that bad back then. I rem Willie Meyer + his brother, Mynard le Roux, Giepie v Zyl, Danie Gerber, Pote Human, Garth Wright, Fransie Erasmus, Jacques du Plessis etc just off the top of my head.
Not such a pity if the Sharks now reap the benefits of the talent from Border and EP. but sad that E/Cape rugby is no longer like the teams of the 1980s.
Anyway Gary Loest must have been some player at school. BTW his son is now in gr.11 at Grey High PE and is also quite a big boy, plays 10,12,15 for their 1st team.

My father apparently pinched me in church till I cried and then said to my mom that I was being naughty and that he is taking me outside….only so he could listen to the game on the radio in the car.
