Let’s not crucify Luke just yet

Guys – you know I don’t even want to discuss this here, but I guess it’s newsworthy, so bear with me. I think we need to let the real facts of the Luke Watson saga come to light before crucifying the lad any further.

You guys know I don’t like him, but the fact remains that the guys thought he was having an off-the-record chat to a bunch of friends, who shared his views. I am not in favour of anybody having their private conversations recorded and splashed all over the media, regardlessof how odious I may personally consider their views to be.

Judged by the amount of traffic the Vomitgate saga has already generated for just this site, I can tell that the general public out there is baying for Luke’s blood and certain sections of the media seem determined to hand over his (oversized) head on a plate. I would urge all of you to take a moderate line in this and rather wait for the real facts to emerge, rather than swallowing the one-sided story we have been fed thus far.

Luke Watson, as much as I despise the little twerp, is as deserving of a fair trial as anyone else.

  • It seems as if the statements may not have been part of his speech, but they weren’t off the record APPARENTLY.

It SEEMS as if they were part of a Q & A afterwards.

  • If they were part of a private discussion then I agree with Rob, we are entitled to our views and often say things that are far more emotionally charged then we would in a public discussion. You should have a reasonable expectation that they will not become part of the public domain.

HOWEVER if this was in any way part of a structured and public conversation either a speech or a Q&A as KSA says, then you have to be far more responsible for what you say and impact people that do not have a private relationship with you and might be able to better understand what you mean. And he was just plain impolite.

  • Firstly a very happy birthday to you indeed Mr Otto and many more. BUT BACK TO THE SUB ON HAND .Why do our administers etc just stick with the joy of the cc final and not the pukey luke story. Our rugby has a way of always imploding when we should be enjoying the positive prospects at hand .Just look at our past.I cant remember the last time i felt so positive about kzn rugby in particular when as if orchistrated both the luke + springbok problems appear and distract from the occasion.i believe we shouldnt even distract ourselves with these matters

    Totally agree.

I have said many crap things in my time, but if people took me to task for it, I remembered 2 very important principles:
    1. Choose your friends carefully
    2. Let your Yay be Yay and your Nay be Nay – don’t talk crap behind people’s back either.

No sympathy here, sorry. Mind you, I am NOT getting invvolved in the mob violence – I have long despised him anyway.

  • weren’t andre markgraaff’s racist comments private. what makes private conversation different from public? the result is the same, the feeling is the same. if you feel that way then your judgement will always be skewed. this guy must be drawn and quartered. he has made an embarrassment of south african rugby, he must accept the fall-out. what you are saying rob, is it is ok to be racist as long as you don’t publicly announce you are racist.

I have to be honest if you say it, you stand by it. Regardless of whether its a private conversation or not.

I recall going to a breakfast chat by Jake, and he first asked if anyone from the media were present and then he stated leaving no doubt that what he was about to say was off the record.

Then again he didn’t insult part of the population, his employers and disparage team mates.

Regardless of the outcome – he should learn that somethings are best not said regardless of your personal opinion.

I do think though that things said in private and things said as par tof a speech hold different weight, from the point of view of the impact it would have. In private I definitely choose my words less carefully. if luke had a slag off to a mate about dutchmen in rugby well fair game, not polite not nice but who here has not said things in private that they definitely would not want published on the net? BUT as a spingbok player making a speech to aspiring rugby players that is plain criminal. He was talking from a position of privlege and respect not only for him but for all those before and after.

You can just imagine Cheeky dragging him over the coals.

So you make statements at an event where you were a key-note speaker, it gets recorded, you then say you’d like to sue (for what I dont know as its on tape), then your father releases a statement that it was out of context and in private.

    It’s hilarious.

  • Well I think it is pretty easy to judge anyone or personal views, in context of rugby or not.

I see two issues here which aren’t really issues.

Luke believes the game is controlled by dutchmen who are inclusive.

I also believe the game is controlled by inclusive idiots to the detrament of our game, been saying it for ages – I just did not call them dutchmen cause I am one.

But even so, since when is being called a dutchman by a SOUTIE offensive or even racist (as some now suggest)?

    Ridiculous.

Secondly, whether we like it or not there are various views on the Bok emblem. Some like it and treasure it, some don’t. Nothing gives me the right to judge someone that does not believe in it or treasure as I do.

I love rugby, not some emblem – that is just a way of identifying with your country or team you support.

Luke does not like the Bok emblem. So what, I don’t like the Bulls flower, does not mean I don’t like the Bulls players or supporters – I visited Loftus for years and loved it.

Luke still wants to represent his country, just not under the Bok. Does that make him any less patriotic than you or me? Not in my book.

I love the Bok, he does not – why the big whoohhaaaa?

So in truth (apart from the Bok issue which is a personal view) he said what most of us have been saying for ages, rugby is being run by a bunch of twats.

I have no issue with his political views.

I take issue with the distasteful, arrogant manner in which he chooses to insult his team mates, the fans and the Bok jersey.

If he doesn’t like playing under it and it naueastes him so much then don;t do it. But don;t come along and get your daddy to pull strings to get you selecetd and then tell the world it disgusts you.

And anyway, if the jersey was good enough for Nelson Mandela then I see no reason why mighty Luke watson should have an issue with it as he’s not even a fraction of the man that Madiba is.

The thing with Luke is, is that most people don’t have an issue with his politcial views – people tend to dislike him simply because he’s more than a little bit of a doos with a head the size of table mountain.
He likes to think it’s becasue of his radical political views but if truth be told he gets shunned because he’s not a very nice guy.

I did the British 10k a few years ago when I was even more unfit than I am now. It’s a cracking run and I tried to get in this year but it was full. Definitely worth a run – it’s awesome. Winds through central London and there are tuens playing and spitfires and tanks lining the streets.

I’v been fortunate in that my body weight has always stayed constant..wouldn’t say skinny my body fat % at the moment is 8%.
Im slightly paranoid now though of gaining after quitting smoking so I’m training extra hard.
The best and most efficient way to cut your time for me is interval training and hills ..its hardcore when done right and shaves alot of time off.

    1) Let the try be scored and then ask for the TMO to look.
    2) Blow the whistle and then NOT decide to go for the TMO and just stick with the TMO call.

I would have preffered the first option.

  • Luke, nobody forced you to wear the Bok jersey. Even my 5 year old has a choice as to what he wears (Lucky for me its always something Sharks related)

If lil ole Luke doesn’t want to pway wiff da other children then maybe his parents should send him to a different school. I for one would not mind losing him to another country (Although I don’t think Zimbabwe’s team even wants him)

As mentioned in an earlier post: “weren’t andre markgraaff’s racist comments private. what makes private conversation different from public? the result is the same, the feeling is the same.”

If any person working for a company made comments along the same lines as Puke &^%$son made they would be dismissed for bringing the company’s name into disrepute. If a person make defamatory comments about another person they could be sued for defamation of character. I hope the same goes here.

Luke Watson: You are the Weakest Link, Goodbye. The reason why nobody likes you in the Bok squad is because you were never there on merit but due to outside influence. This is a professional sport and business, were we employ and promote talent and hard work (Something you lack)

In closing: The bok emblem and name has been around long before apartheid. Leave it alone :!: Madiba wore the emblem with pride and he didn’t feel nauseous or insist that it be changed before he wore the jersey. I was willing to change many things over the past 14 years, the flag (not a huge thing) the anthem (not a huge thing) street names (not a huge thing) but I will not accept messing with the bok emblem (it is one of the few things that has united this beautiful country and allowed people of all walks of life to support a winning team)

    GO SHARKS!!!

    LUKE WATSON DISCIPLINARY PROCESS

    13 October 2008 (Posted: 14:26)

Following discussions with Judge Lex Mpati, the chairman of the National Judicial Committee of the South African Rugby Union, a designated official has been appointed to investigate statements alleged to have been made by Springbok and Western Province looseforward Luke Watson.
Durban attorney Dekker Govender has been tasked with investigating the allegations and weighing the evidence to determine if they merit a breach of the South African Rugby Union code of conduct.

If a breach is identified the player will face a disciplinary hearing.

When people like Luke get behind a microphone or talk to a journalist, they have only one thing on their mind: to highlight their own self-importance and sing their own praises. Watson is phoney through and through. I am so glad his comments were taped – now he can be investigated and held accountable for everything he has said.
