Leopards top try-scorer Jan van Zyl is back in the side that will fight for promotion when they face the Falcons in Brakpan on Friday night. Van Zyl will start at fullback in one of three changes in the backline.
News 24 reports that Van Zyl, who scored 17 tries this season, will replace Anvor Schooney at fullback for this vital clash while the bulldozing Japie Nel returns at inside centre. The third change is at scrumhalf where stalwart Theo van Zyl replaces Michael Bondesio.
Nel’s inclusion will give the Leopards much-needed thrust in the midfield while Van Zyl is a fine and proven finisher.
Schooney was targeted by the Griffons and was found wanting. He was targeted by the Cheetahs in the Vodacom Cup and by the Griffons, who fielded many of the same players, and was a clear weak link.
Clayton Durand will again start at flyhalf. The Leopards pivot has scored 248 points this season and needs just two to complete his 250. He is second only to Morn Steyn, who is on 281.
The Leopards pack and forward reserves are unchanged from last week with Ligtoring Landman still on the bench. There is also no place for the regular captain Andre Swanepoel or new recruit Wilhelm Koch.
Leopards: Jan van Zyl; Vuyo Zangqa, Deon van Rensburg, Japie Nel, Colin Lloyd; Clayton Durand, Theo van Wyk; Riaan Swanepoel (C), RW Kember, Jaco Bouwer, Draad Linde, Antonie Gronum, Dietlov Coetzee, Gavin Williamson, Divan Kotze.
