The Platinum Leopards have one foot in the big time after beating the Falcons 29-24 in a promotion relegation match played in Brakpan on Friday night.

The visitors from Potchefstroom deservedly won the match after trailing 10-6 at halftime.

News24 reports that the Leopards took control of the match in the second half with flyhalf Clayton Durand’s educated boot, dictating in the second stanza with a slight breeze and rain at his back.

The Falcons scored a valuable bonus point after the hooter sounded when big prop Dewald Coetzee scored a try to narrow the gap between the two teams to five points before next Friday’s game in Potchefstroom.

All the Leoaprds have to do when they host the visitors at is to win the game to guarantee participation in the A section of the Currie Cup next year.

Caught the Leopards asleep

The game started with the two teams feeling each other out like two boxers and the Falcons scored the only try of the first half when veteran Nico Luus and hooker Jody Jeneker caught the Leopards asleep winning the ball in the front of the line out and advanced to just short of the Leopards goalline from where Falcons captain Hanno Coetzee crossed the line.

After the break Durand slotted another two penalties to take the Leopards into a 12-10 lead before flanker Jaco Bouwer intercepted a loose pass from a Falcons player to put some daylight between the two scores.

The Falcons scored three tries to the two of the Leopards but played tactically poorly against the wind and rain, putting themselves under unnecessary pressure.

The final nail in the coffin was a try by Leopards fullback Jan van Zyl who raced away to score a vital try which took the Leopards 12 points ahead before Coetzee’s final act.

Leopards: Tries: Jaco Bouwer, Jan van Zyl. Conversions: Clayton Durand (2).

Penalties: Durand (5).

Falcons: Tries: Hanno Coetzee, Poerie van Rooyen, Dewald Coetzee. Conversions: Jeff Perkins, Van Rooyen (2). Penalty: Perkins.

  • C’mon Valke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If I am not mistaken they were also behind after the first leg last year, but I think the 2nd leg was at home last year. This year it isn’t

  • @Silver Fox (Comment 2) :

That is actually something that WOULD be interesting to watch develop. I wonder how much money is being poured into the Leopards and how much MORE will be poured in if they go to the premier div.

Who is their new owner? “Anglo-Plats” if I recall? No shortage of money there.

If they make it to the Premier Div and survive the first season there could be a few NAMES signing for them the year after that.

  • GO LEOPARDS!! cant wait to see the Sharks play here in Potch.

@KSA Shark © (Comment 3) : Leopards already signed “True Blue” Smit (Flyhalf) from the valke, and Wilhelm Koch from the Lions. all of them ex Leopards players. Its good to see that our Porvince`s big Commercial entities are backing our rugby team. been our draw-back all these years, no money. Now the leopards started contracting players longer than 2 years!

would be great this weekend… Sharks beating the Cows and Leopards winning against the Valke!
