The Blue Bulls’ Springbok wing Akona Ndungane has failed his fitness test on Monday and will not be eligible for Saturday’s Absa Currie Cup Final against the Sharks in Durban.
Rugby 365 reports that the team doctor Org Strauss confirmed that Ndungane is not yet 100 percent and has ruled him out of the Final.
“Akona started to run during the course of last week and he trained with the team on Monday morning, but his groin is not yet strong enough to play in a match,” Strauss said.
“We don’t want to take any chances with his fitness, but I trust that he will be fully fit when we start with our off-season training.”
Bulls coach Frans Ludeke admitted that it is a setback to the team, but added that he is confident in the back-up players.
John Mametsa, who was involved in an incident with the police over the weekend, will partner Bryan Habana on the wing. Mametsa picked up no injuries in the scuffle and is fully fit to play.
Apart from Ndungane, the only other player that will miss the Final is veteran Bok lock Bakkies Botha.
“I would have been great to have Bakkies in the team but he will definitely not play,” coach Frans Ludeke said.
“His knee is not yet 100 percent and therefore we could not consider him.”
Despite the two injuries to his World Cup Springboks, Ludeke is confident that his team is up for the challenge.
“We have worked hard to get here, to get that opportunity to play in the Final, so we are really looking forward to it,” he said.Tweet
