No changes for Sharks

Sharks coach John Plumtree has followed the example set by his Bulls counterpart, Frans Ludeke, in naming a completely unchanged team to contest the Currie Cup Final.

The speculation over which hooker will start has now been put to rest. Bismarck du Plessis will wear the number 2 jersey, with his brother Jannie and Beast Mtawarira alongside him. Johann Muller retains the captaincy and the number 5 jersey, while John Smit joins Deon Carstens and Albert van den Berg in an all-Springbok tight forward replacement division. Steven Sykes is the only uncapped player in the tight five.

Jean Deysel is at blindside flank, where he will continue the fine work he has delivered all season, in tandem with Jacques Botes and the stunningly talented Ryan Kankowski. Bull-slayer Keegan Daniel will add his particular brand of effervescence off the bench.

The all-international back division is unchanged for a fourth successive match, with Fred Michalak the only non-Springbok in the lineup. Ruan Pienaar will continue at scrumhalf and will be first-choice goalkicker. Frans Steyn, at inside centre, will provide a threat from further out. Adi Jacobs, Odwa Ndungane and JP Pietersen will all look to continue their fine Bok form on the provincial stage, while veteran fullback Stefan Terblanche will be a pillar of strength in the last line of defense.

Uncapped Rory Kockott and Bradley Barritt join another Springbok, Waylon Murray, as the backline replacements. The final will be Barritt’s last game for the Sharks, as he departs for Saracens and the Guinness Premiership shortly afterwards.

  • Said it on three websites now so I mean this.

It is a mistake to leave Smit on the bench.

  • @MorneN (Comment 1) : I disagree with you, I believe he should be brought on about 10min into the second half, provide some calmness, to keep the guys calm until the final whistle goes.
We don’t want John to be taken of 5min before that final whistle again…and this time it definitely won’t happen.

    Fourth!

Your slow ass was last in posting the team! :)

    @Letgo (Comment 4) :

Not so sure. Nervs are at their worst in the opening stanza – if you fall behind and have to play catch up rugby the Bulls will simply choke the life out of the game by kicking to corners – they have the team to do that.

  • This time I agree with John coming in later…we need to keep him there in case the game goes into “extra” time again…we seem to “jaag aan” towards the end…We normally do rather well fisr half…second half’s our achilles..(and they are also gonna be nervous in the 1st half…so its even warground

But I would not have minded him there the whole time..

  • As much as my hear says Sharks win I have one problem the Bulls know how to win finals and we havent got there yet maybe the class of 2008 will prove me wrong for if it does we will go down and sth side of the millenium. we have the class the potential but not the mental strength. i really hope im wrong
the bulls are n ot the better side here we are but they have been here done that before we have only been here. hence the draw

  • Some interesting facts from Rugby365:

As a player, Sharks coach John Plumtree appeared in two successful Absa Currie Cup titles; in 1990 and 1996. In the ’96 Final, he replaced Wickus van Heerden on the side of the Sharks scrum, the uncle of Blue Bulls star Wikus van Heerden, who will start in the No.7 jersey for the Pretoria-based team this Saturday.

  • Fourteen Blue Bulls players (out of their 22-man matchday squad) have previous Currie Cup Final experience, whilst just four Sharks players have been involved in Currie Cup Finals before this weekend. The Sharks do, however, have an ace up their sleeves in the form of Frenchman Frederic Michalak, who has played in, and won, Heineken Cup and French finals for Toulouse.

  • This will be the 48th Currie Cup Final since the advent of finals in this tournament in 1939. The Bulls have played 29 finals before now, with the Sharks set to make their 10th appearance in a Currie Cup Final. The Bulls have won 22 out of those 29 finals, with the Sharks winning four out of 10.

  • Bok prop Jannie du Plessis has a Currie Cup winners’ medal from last year with the Cheetahs. This will be his fourth successive Absa Currie Cup Final, having also played in the 2005 and 2006 finals. Jannie will play alongside his brother Bismarck this weekend, joining other Currie Cup Final brothers: Eben and Joggie Jansen (Free State); Naas and Darius Botha (Northern Transvaal); Willie, Michael and Carel du Plessis (WP); Chris and Pieter Rossouw (WP); and Geo and Jacques Cronje (Blue Bulls).

Well, it’s almost time, the excitement here is growing. With the school involving the kids in the rugby and at the offices. I got hubby to wear a Sharks shirt just to bother the Bull supporter at work…would love to see how his day is going…lol

  • @robdylan (Go Sharks!) (Comment 53) : Nah I’ve never liked her. I remember the first time I encountered her. Was when I took Compilers and went to her to ask for some help and she just gave me attitude. Been that way ever since. I mean, doesn’t she get paid with my money to help me?? No one likes her these days. Maybe she’s going senile. Yes, the resident super genius is still there. Was my lecturer for Data Mining after which I decided not to take Advanced AI. Ever do one of his Honours 3-day take home exams?? Never again! Thinking of doing my thesis on data mining applications in sport next year so will probably ask him to supervise.

  • @klempie (Comment 96) : Bruce Watson was(is?) a real industry expert when it comes to Compilers… he actually worked at Microsoft as well as starting his own company. Was a very impressive guy, because he’d actually DONE stuff, unlike the rest of the folks who just liked to talk a lot.

C# is the tool of the devil.
