The Falcons will defend their Currie Cup Premier Division status with Petrus van Rooyen in their last line of defence, when they travel to Potchefstroom to meet the Leopards in the Second Round promotion/relegation match on Friday.
The Leopards won the First Round match 29-24 in Brakpan last week and will have a clear edge going into the final encounter.
The lack of a fit specialised fullback has forced Falcons coach Rudy Joubert to move the versatile Van Rooyen, who has played on the wing lately, to fullback.
Ironically Van Rooyen has signed a contract with the Pumas for next year, where he will be utilised as a fullback.
Big Johan Swartz will come in on the right wing.
Nicky Kritzinger, who came on last Friday when Jeff Perkins cried off, has been named on the bench. Kritzinger will be moving to the Leopards next season.
It will also be a last match in the Falcons’s jersey for Dewald Pretorius (moving to Griquas), Gerrie Odendaal (moving to the Cheetahs), Rayno Barnes (to Griquas) and probably veteran Nico Luus, who came out of retirement in the latter stages of the Currie Cup competition to help out.
Others who are leaving the union are Riaan Smit (Leopards), Len Olivier (Sharks), Rouan Cloete (Lions) and Nico Pretorius (Biarritz).
Joubert has yet to finalise his bench for this vital clash.
