Toulouse utility back Maxime Medard was the only debutante named on Wednesday, in coach Marc Lievremont’s 23-man France squad set to face Argentina next weekend in Marseille.

Rugby 365 reports that the 21-year-old was the leading French try-scorer in last season’s Top 14 tournament, with an impressive tally of 14 tries.

Lievremont did not recall stalwart flyhalf Frederic Michalak, who has returned to France after playing for South Africa’s recent Currie Cup champions (the Sharks) for the past year.

Michalak is however set to return to the Toulouse squad for Saturday’s Top 14 match against Brive.

Sale duo Sebastien Chabal and Lionel Faure were also named in the squad, along with Tigers hooker Benjamin Kayser, while wing Vincent Clerc is still unavailable due to injury.

France host Argentina on November 8 after winning only one of their last seven encounters – after which they are scheduled to face the Pacific Islanders and Australia on consecutive weekends.

France squad:

Forwards: (13): Lionel Faure (Sale), Fabien Barcella (Biarritz), Dimitri Szarzewski (Stade Français), Benjamin Kayser (Leicester), Nicolas Mas (Perpignan), Benoit Lecouls (Toulouse), Lionel Nallet (Castres, captain), Sebastien Chabal (Sale), Romain Millo-Chluski (Toulouse), Thierry Dusautoir (Toulouse), Fulgence Ouedraogo (Montpellier), Louis Picamoles (Montpellier), Imanol Harinordoquy (Biarritz).

Backs: (10): Morgan Parra (Bourgoin), Jean-Baptiste Elissalde (Toulouse), Vincent Trinh-Duc (Montpellier), Lionel Beauxis (Stade Français), Yannick Jauzion (Toulouse), Benoit Baby (Clermont), Alexis Palisson (Brive), Cedric Heymans (Toulouse), Maxime Médard (Toulouse), Julien Malzieu (Clermont).

Still not a huge fan of ML and his selections although these are slightly better than those he fielded in last years 6Ns.

  • ML is very hung up on grooming the France team for the next RWC. Last year in 6Ns he went with many players who had absolutely no international experience and the results were horrid. This time around things are a little more balanced but not great.

I would hope by 6N he decides to recall not only Fred but his Toulouse mates Clement Poitrenaud and Vincent Clerc as starters and then bring in younger less experienced players on the bench so they have an opportunity to learn from them.

  • Fred’s only 26 isn’t he? It’s not like he’s gonna be over the hill for 2011.

  • @klempie (Comment 4) : Of course not but I have money riding on the fact that after the next RWC Fred will be returning to and staying in Durbs to play for the Sharks.

  • Ha Ha Klempie, for days people have been saying how they like your avatar – I didn’t know what they were on about because it hadn’t changed on my computer. For some reason it has only now changed with my latest refresh effort – wicked.

  • @VanWilder (Comment 7) : yes I am biased toward Fred but after having spoken to him just a few days prior to when this interview occured I am confident that he would not have said something like that.
