Div to unlock a surprise?

Danie Rossouw is set for a start at lock for the Springboks in Saturday’s rugby test against Wales in the Millennium Stadium.

Liam Del Carme writes for Beeld that the utility forward could be paired with Victor Matfield after it emerged on Monday that Bakkies Botha is ready to play no more than 30 minutes. It is expected that Botha will be utilised off the bench.

Botha injured his knee in the test against Argentina in Johannesburg earlier this year. His inclusion in the Springbok touring squad raised some eyebrows, but according to team doctor Craig Roberts the big man is ready to make a comeback at the Millennium Stadium.

“Bakkies did very well. He was sidelined for months and had been on a rehabilitation programme. He only just missed out on being ready for the Currie Cup final,” said Roberts.

“We’ve built his fitness and he did a lot of additional work last week. He trained flat-out today (Monday. “We’ll be happy if he can play 20 minutes. Our goal is to have him playing between 20 and 30.”

With Botha earmarked for the bench, Rossouw could come into the equation.

The other candidate is Andries Bekker. He played with Matfield in Botha’s absence this year, but Bok coach Peter de Villiers may think twice before fielding two such similar locks in the Northern Hemisphere.

Bekker can perform to expectations in the lineouts and with the ball tucked under his arm, but it’s Rossouw’s play in the tight loose that could hold sway.

Bekker is expected to play a part in next week’s test against Scotland.

If Monday’s training is anything to go by, Fourie du Preez will play scrumhalf, while Adrian Jacobs and not Jaque Fourie will wear the No 13 jersey.

Roberts says the team is physically in better shape than many people would expect.

“It’s always difficult at the end of the season. When we got together in Cape Town, I was impressed with the players’ physical condition,” he said.

“There were bumps and bruises from the Currie Cup final because 17 of our players in the group were involved in the final. It was good to have some players resting. We limited their training. However, everybody trained flatout today.”

Possible Bok team: Conrad Jantjes, JP Pietersen, Adrian Jacobs, Jean de Villiers, Bryan Habana, Ruan Pienaar, Fourie du Preez, Pierre Spies, Juan Smith, Schalk Burger, Victor Matfield, Danie Rossouw, John Smit (captain), Bismarck du Plessis, Gurthrö Steenkamp.

  • “He only just missed out on being ready for the Currie Cup final,” said Roberts…..thanks for keeping him out the final Craig ;) ….Sharks allegiances die hard.

If Steenkamp and Smit are the props, expect Welsh ascendency in the scrums……

  • Speaking of surprises…

It seems the Welsh think the whole Smit at TH thing is a ploy to confuse them…

    http://www.walesonline.co.uk

GETHIN JENKINS believes the Springboks are playing mind games and World Cup-winning skipper John Smit won’t line up against Wales at tighthead.
The Wales and Lions loosehead prop, pictured below, faces the prospect of going head-to-head with Smit come scrum time at the Millennium Stadium.
Smit, who is widely regarded as one of the best hookers in the world, is being considered for the ’Boks No 3 jersey.
But Jenkins dismisses the notion that Smit will be played out of position against Wales.
“I cannot see him playing tighthead on Saturday,” said Jenkins.
“They have their first-choice tighthead Brian Mujati and I think he will play.
“Stephen Jones has said Smit did play on the tighthead in Clermont last season because Mario Ledesma was first-choice hooker.
“He is a quality player and I am sure he would be more than adequate in that position, but I cannot see them throwing him in at the deep end.”

    With reason….

“Date of Birth 17 November 1980
    Height 1.88m (6′ 2″)
    Weight 117kg

He is able to play both loosehead and tighthead prop, which often means that he has been seen as an ideal substitute.

Jenkins made his first appearance for Wales against Romania in 2003, and has so far won 42 caps. In the 2005 Six Nations Championship he was rated one of the greatest influences in Wales’ Grand Slam winning side, scoring a memorable try against Ireland.

He was selected for the British and Irish Lions tour to New Zealand in 2005 and played in all three tests.”

Don’t think throwing Ryk / Roland into the deep end is a big deal…

    John William Smit
Date of birth 3 April 1978 (age 30)
Place of birth Pietersburg (now Polokwane), South Africa
    Height 1.88 m
Weight 117 kg (interesting hey ???)

I’m not going to add a summary of his career cos that will be a bit like showing off.

There’s also an article on iol that the “powers that be” in this place might wanna put up as an article…

 not sure about Percy at 1.

Let me switch to broken record mode:
Smit played TH from Primary School until 1999 …
Smit was then moved to a hooker…which happens to be right next to TH…(meaning he’s been rubbing shoulders with the best TH’s for a long time)
Smit had a few cameos at TH for his French club…
Knowing the kinda player he is…he’s probably been working very hard in the past few weeks to sharpen his skills…

    That’s a pretty good CV…
