South Africa will this afternoon know if the two most talked about experiments in SA Rugby are on their way to become the most talked about successes or whether they will be dismal failures.

Personally I believe both John Smit and Ruan Pienaar will pass with flying colours this afternoon.

The heavier fields in Europe will slow the players down a fraction and that fraction will be all that Ruan Pienaar needs to settle himself into the position.

John Smit will have to dig deep to come out on top, but that is the character of the man and he will come out smiling during the Captains interview after the match.

The Welsh will be unsettled by Roberts’ move to inside center to replace the injured Henson and Shanklin shifting off the bench to outside center.

KSA prediction: Boks by 13 Points scoring four tries.

Kick-off at Millenium Stadium in Cardiff at 14.30 GMT. (16:30 SA Time)

Television coverage outside the Europe:
Supersport on MNET and SS1 at 16:00 SA Time
Showsport on SS3 at 16:30 SA Time

Weather: The Roof was closed yesterday and will remain closed.

Referee: Alan Rolland (Ireland)
Assistant referees: Alan Lewis (Ireland), George Clancy (Ireland)
TMO: Geoff Warren (England)

Wales: 15 Lee Byrne, 14 Leigh Halfpenny, 13 Tom Shanklin, 12 Jamie Roberts, 11 Shane Williams, 10 Stephen Jones, 9 Gareth Cooper, 8 Andy Powell, 7 Martyn Williams, 6 Ryan Jones (captain), 5 Ian Evans, 4 Alun Wyn Jones, 3 Adam Jones, 2 Matthew Rees, 1 Gethin Jenkins
Replacements: 16 Richard Hibbard, 17 Duncan Jones, 18 Ian Gough, 19 Dafydd Jones, 20 Dwayne Peel, 21 James Hook, 22 Andrew Bishop

South Africa: 15 Conrad Jantjes, 14 JP Pietersen, 13 Adrian Jacobs, 12 Jean de Villiers, 11 Bryan Habana, 10 Ruan Pienaar, 9 Fourie du Preez, 8 Pierre Spies, 7 Juan Smith, 6 Schalk Burger, 5 Victor Matfield, 4 Bakkies Botha, 3 John Smit (captain), 2 Bismarck du Plessis, 1 Beast Mtawarira.
Replacements: 16 Brian Mujati, 17 Gürthro Steenkamp, 18 Andries Bekker, 19 Ryan Kankowski, 20 Ricky Januarie, 21 Frans Steyn, 22 Jaque Fourie.

    Seriously though

Gavin Henson has withdrawn from Wales’ international against South Africa on Saturday due to a nagging ankle injury.

News 24 reports that the injury-prone centre, whose seven-year Welsh career has been dogged by a raft of differing injuries and who has only played three games since his comeback from ankle surgery, will be replaced by Tom Shanklin.

Surely there must be a grievance route for shit like this?

From what I saw (25 min onward), Juan has still not hit form yet, although the loosies in general were pretty ineffective.

John, Ruan, Jantjies and JPP were superb!

Was disappointed woith both our scrummies, and I see that Bismark is was ill-disciplined and selfish as ever.

The ref was in the nicest possible way a complete COCK!

In those final min you got the feelng he was looking for anything to blow the Boks on…must have had alot riding at the bookies..

Frankly its bullshit that at international level we are subjected to such one sided officiating.

In saying that althoug the Boks were average at best to pull off a win away from home with min possesion minus aplyers for 10 and a one-eyed prick for a ref we did well to pull through.

This kinda play though will not slide against England.

coulda done better, but hell we won and the two big talking points before the game, john and ruan, both put a lid on their detractors.

got the feeling that we played a lazy game, the players underestimated the welsh and just did enough to win. get the feeling they always knew they would.

the only exception was spies, he just did nothing. habana was dik quiet, i dunno whats wrong there, not looking for work, get the feeling he is carrying an injury.

IMO, I think that the tactical play in always kicking from deep, not to mention the stupid deep restarts were bad decisions, but the backs weren’t the reason for our loss of momentum – our loosies went AWOL.

We weren’t loosing the game with ball in hand – we were loosing the ball cos we couldn’t (and wouldn’t: kicking) retain possession.

Cant really complain about any backs, other than the 9′s today.

I was very impressed with Ruan at 10..very calm under pressure, if you consider the entire 2nd half we were up against it.

Once again I felt there was no structure..basics forst fancy stuff after.

I really think its time Habana gets dropped and Nokwe gets a run.

JPP for me at the moment is playing amazing rugby and by far the best we have in SA.

Alos its time for Spies to grab a seat in the staduim and waych the game.I really do feel for Kanko cause everyime there is such expectation from him when he gets on , no time to settle and feels he has to do something everytime he touches the ball.Give the lad a start next week.

  • Oh Captain, my Captain! What a performance. JP, wow, what a truly superb defender, and putting in hits all over the field. Something is wrong with Habana, I still think he has all the class in the world, but right now he is not playing like Habs, he was virtually invisible, and gave up several breaks on his wing. I think for both the Boks and for Habs, he should be rested the remainder of the tour. Odwa and JP are both world class and the way Odwa has been all over the field lately, is in much better form than Habs. Odwa is by far the hardest working wing in SA, possibly the world.

Super competing in the lineouts when it really counted at the end. Surely Victor and Bekker (massive reach) must be two of the best linout poachers in the world. Spies also invisible, and should have been replaced at halftime, Kanko must start the remaining tour games. Juan is another great player that is looking tired, perhaps he should rest and try a trio of Brussow, Kanko and Schalk. Kanko and Schalk are two fantastic ball carriers. Service slowed dramatically when Rikki came on, eish why does he have to take that little hop back before passing, it slows down the delivery so much!

Even though I think Habs and Juan need to be replaced for the remaining games, I still believe they are the best in their positions when playing their best, and should be back in the team for the Lions tour, but right now they need a break. With Adi and Bakkies injured, my best Bok team with this touring squad is now:

    1. Beast
    2. Bissie
    3. John
    4. Bekker
    5. Vic
    6. Brussow
    7. Schalk
    8. Kanko
    9. Fourie
    10. Ruan
    11. JP
    12. Jean
    13. J. Fourie
    14. Odwa
    15. Jantjes

    16. Gurthro
    17. Mujati
    18. Muller (should get a call up)
    19. Spies
    20. Rikki (I don’t like this would rather use Ruan as 9 backup)
    21. Steyn
    22. Nokwe
