Januarie in for Du preez

Ricky Januarie has been nominated to replace the injured Fourie Du Preez in the Starting XV on Saturday against Scotland.

According to reports, Du Preez has injured his quad during training on Thursday afternoon and a scan has confirmed the damage that may keep him out of next weeks match against England as well.

With the original back-up, Januarie, starting at No. 9 the back up will now be Ruan Pienaar. Januarie is replaced on the bench by Danie Rossouw.

Considering the change in performance between the halves when Januarie came on for Du Preez last week this development must be a concern. We need Fourie Du Preez and Ruan Pienaar to play together as much as possible if we hope to do well in next year’s Tri-nations and Lions test series.

Springboks:
Starting XV: 15 Conrad Jantjes, 14 JP Pietersen, 13 Adi Jacobs, 12 Jean de Villiers, 11 Bryan Habana, 10 Ruan Pienaar, 9 Ricky Januarie, 8 Pierre Spies, 7 Juan Smith, 6 Schalk Burger, 5 Victor Matfield, 4 Bakkies Botha, 3 John Smit (Capt.), 2 Bismarck du Plessis, 1 Beast Mtawarira.
Replacements: 16 Brian Mujati, 17 Gurthro Steenkamp, 18 Andries Bekker, 19 Ryan Kankowski, 20 Danie Rossouw, 21 Frans Steyn, 22 Jaque Fourie.

  • @McLovin (Comment 3) :

I was expecting him to be the bench replacement for this injury already.

I give credit to PdV though that he hasn’t done that. If he isn’t going to do it now against Scotland then he certainly won’t be doing it against the Poms next weekend.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 2) : This will get us through the Scotland test, but surely we must fly in another scrumhalf for the test against England. Would be a good time to bring in Kockett since he will be partnering Ruan at the Sharks, and he most certainly earned it with his Super 14 performances.

I’d have to say that Steyn will be backup flyhalf in both the tests, if Rose did not get game time against Scotland, he most certainly won’t against England. Also remember that both Adi and JdV can cover flyhalf in a pinch. My opinion, if Rose was going to come into the mix at all it would have been at fullback not flyhalf.

  • My biggest concern is that the delivery from the base slowed dramatically when Januarie replaced FdP in the last test. He has a tendency to hop backwards before passing, and sometimes taking a step or two toward the flyhalf. I will say he did not step toward the flyhalf in the Welsh test, but he did hop backwards at almost every ruck before passing. That hop is the difference in delivery speed between him and FdP. Januarie’s passing is excellent, sharp and on target, if he could just eliminate the hop, he would be so much better.

  • Januarie is a tiger though, and will always play hard and irritate the opposition continually.

    my concern as well.

Last week i said the slower fields would help RP gain confidence as he won’t be under that much pressure.

This week the opposition are a little slower and so is our scrumhalf so it should almost be status quo for RP.

next week is a different kettle of fish though.

I hope so, because I don’t think fine will be sufficient next week.

Don’t get me wrong, the only thing that will improve it next week is if FdP us ready. I don’t think Kockott should be flown out and if he IS flown out it should be as back-up to RJ.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 20) : I also think that Kockett should be flown out as backup to Januarie, not to jump over him. I just think we should have a backup scrumhalf so that Ruan can play flyhalf without having to worry about covering scrumhalf as well.

I gathered as much from your earlier comment but there have been calls earlier that Kockott should be there ahead of Januarie.

I just felt the need to clarify that I did not think so.

  • Surely Conradie will have to go – you want an experienced 9 for the Northern fields;not the time to blood a newbie off the bench against England.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 30) : Don’t know about that… How else would one gain experience but for playing? This tour is as much a developing tour as one can ask for.

At the same time it will not be lots of newbies, only one or two and they will certainly have to provide the answers,…..or not.

Not so sure about that either. I would rather have a good debutant play 5min IF needed than an over the hill experienced player.

  • Yip it is Vermaak.

    ON STANDBY:

Peter Grant (WP), Jannie du Plessis (Sharks), Johann Muller (Sharks), Wynand Olivier (Blue Bulls), Adriaan Strauss (Cheetahs), Heinke van der Merwe (Lions), Jano Vermaak (Lions)

I think the guy should be flown out regardless, just to ensure we have cover for next week. And if he isn’t needed then so be it, but i’d rather be safe than sorry.
