The Boks visit Murray field today in the hope of going two from two on tour.

The Scots last managed a win over the Springboks in 2002. The tour of the UK in 2002 was also the infamous tour where we lost 3 – 53 to England a week later. The Springboks came home from that tour with their tails between their legs having lost all three matches.

This year however there is very little chance of that happening again. The Springboks of Pieter De Villiers are a very different side to the one that Rudolph Streauli took on tour in 2002.

Point of interest: Bok Captain John Smit will equal Os du Randt’s record of 80 caps as a Springbok forward when takes to the field today.

KSA Prediction: The Springboks will win this match comforably by 20 points or more and Bryan Habana will be on the score sheet.

Kick-off at Murrayfield in Edinburgh at 14.30 GMT. (16:30 SA Time)

Television coverage outside Europe:
Supersport on MNET and SS1 at 16:00 SA Time
Showsport on SS4 at 16:30 SA Time

Referee: Dave Pearson (England)
Assistant Referees: Alain Rolland (Ireland), Hugh Watkins (Wales)
TMO: Graham Hughes (England)

Scotland: 15 Chris Paterson, 14 Thom Evans, 13 Ben Cairns, 12 Nick De Luca, 11 Rory Lamont, 10 Phil Godman, 9 Mike Blair (captain), 8 Alistair Hogg, 7 John Barclay, 6 Jason White, 5 Jim Hamilton, 4 Nathan Hines, 3 Euan Murray, 2 Ross Ford, 1 Allan Jacobsen
Replacements: 16 Dougie Hall, 17 Alasdair Dickinson, 18 Matt Mustchin, 19 Scott Gray, 20 Rory Lawson, 21 Dan Parks, 22 Hugo Southwell

South Africa: 15 Conrad Jantjes, 14 JP Pietersen, 13 Adi Jacobs, 12 Jean de Villiers, 11 Bryan Habana, 10 Ruan Pienaar, 9 Ricky Januarie, 8 Pierre Spies, 7 Juan Smith, 6 Schalk Burger, 5 Victor Matfield, 4 Bakkies Botha, 3 John Smit (captain), 2 Bismarck du Plessis, 1 Beast Mtawarira.

  • Another interesting fact.

Adi Jacobs is the only survivor from the team that lost to Scotland in 2002.

Although Butch James and Bolla Conradie could both have been available to play today.

  • This is what i had to say about the issue last week.

Make no mistake, Mossie did deserve to get penalised. I don’t want to get into but they were allowed to do it discussions.

Fourie would have been fine had he stayed on his feet. it doesn’t matter that it was a balance issue when he fell over. He tackled the player, (legal) got to his feet and played the ball (legal) but then a split second later fell over and sealed the ball (not legal)

Did he deserve a yellow card? for the incident in isolation, NO, but he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. It has happened before and it will happen again. A ref gives a general warning and then some poor sod who has JUST come onto the pitch is the next guy to get penalised and he has to go sit in the bin. (Wrong place wrong time)

  • I saw your answer and discussion, but after watching it again, I had another thought (yeah I know, thinking just results in me getting a headache).

Anyway, it seems JF recovers the ball legally while on his feet, then with the ball in his possession, he falls over forward, then places the ball back between his legs. Surely once he recovered the ball legally (while on his feet), and only after he recovered falls over forward, surely he has the right to place the ball just like any tackled ball carrier? This is where I am confused, it seems his recovery was legal, and he fell over once he already had possession. I understand that if he had fallen over in the act of recovering the ball he should have been pinged, but I don’t believe that is what happened.

I don’t have video of the incicdent but in the way you describe it he could be considered legal.

The way I saw it (and I’ve only seen it during the match) it looked as if he placed the ball backwards before he fell over.

  • OK, so your call is based on the fact he did not actually carry the ball, just recovered, pushed it behind him then fell over? I see how that would be illegal, since he was no longer a ball carrier when going to ground and did indeed seal the ball while going to ground. But my viewing was a little different.

I do not hold any blame for the referee, I am looking at replays looking for specific actions and timing, it all happened in the heat of the moment and the referee made the call. I think it would be interesting to watch the replay together with the ref and ask his opinion after pointing out the timing.

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 14) :

We now just need to decide if he was holding it when he fell over or if he had already placed it?

Did you watch Boots & All on thursday (sorry stupid question)

Andre Watson was commenting on the foot in touch incident and he said the ref got it wrong and that it should have been our ball, citing exactly the same laws I cited during the week on the issue but he came up with a different result to me

He believes the ball had stopped moving before the player touched it whereas I think it was still moving.

Whether Fourie deserved to be penalised at all will also be down to the individuals opinion on whether he was still holding the ball or had he already placed it.

I would love to see the clip again to have a few good looks at it.

Rob has found fitness experts, psychological experts, coaching experts, and of course we have our own in house Rugby Laws expert in ou Grote KSA.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 18) : KSA, I did see Boots and All, hence the comment about getting blown. You are 100% right that ball was still moving when he picked it up, Watson was wrong. I watched the replay several times (thanks Kudu Club), and the ball rolled onto its side, then rolled back onto the point and this is where it was picked up. Since I have never seen a kicked rugby ball settle on the point, I can only assume the ball was going to fall off the point onto the side, and therefore was still moving when he picked it up. To me this was very very clear.

  • It was very clear that when his hand first touched the ball it was on its point, and never rolled to its side since he picked it up hence stopping the roll.

  • I have always believed that no matter the sport, all participants should officiate an event at least once in their lives. It brings a whole new understanding what refs and umpires go through. I think players would not be so quick to criticize if they had this experience. I refereed a few fun games and make it a point to participate in the race committee for at least three sailing events a year.

I still think JK is about the best referee in the world. What I really like is his very calm demeanour and the fact he does not coach, he simply warns a player then calls the foul.

yeah there are different courses that you need to do.

    level 1, level 2 etc.

as an example to be able to referee at the Dubai 7′s as part of the internatioanl TMO or 4th and 5th officials you need to have completed Level two less than 2 years before (IF i recall correctly)

to ref at club level in the Arabian Gulf you just need to have level 1 though.

Once you achieve your certification, they have your contact information, and so long as you keep them informed of changes, there is no reason all certified referees should receive directives from the IRB. e-mail is a wonderful thing, the IRB should figure that out.

So now he makes boerewors any time we want it. Have 20 lbs in my freezer now. The Amish butcher is really nice, talked to him for a while, he said they have all tried the boerewors and really like it, so they are making it for themselves now. Goes right with the bratwurst, weiswurst and other good German sausage they also make.

Yeah he used to get quite excited around the late 90′s and then suddenly he became very quiet on the field and almost took on an aire of “aristocracy” on the pitch. Some people don’t like it, I LOVE it.

He has such cool control, he doesn’t raise his voice he just implies the authority with his tone.

His best comment ever was in the early 00′s when Bobby was doing all the radio stuff and TV ads etc. The same year Bobby gave the “you lied to me Tappe, you lied to me” speech.

JK nailed WP for something on the field and Bobby wanted to talk YET again after how many times during the match and JK just tuned him in THAT tone “Hey Bobby!! I talk on the field….you talk on the Radio”

    Bobby just shut up.

On water and protest committee sailing judges have to be certified at 3 levels, but then have annual training requirements as well. I believe they must attend a minimum of 20 hours of training annually to maintain their certification.

I agree with you about JK, speak with an air of authority, does not require raising one’s voice.

It was funny in the CC this season, I think against the Valke, JK walked up to an injured player and tuned him to watch his language.

  • We used to have Law meetings every 2nd Monday in Dbn when I was still refereeing there.

I am not sure what the occasion was but JK gave a talk the one night and somehow the guys got onto Shakespeare and what rugby would have been like in his time. and what commands the ref would have given in those times. The one that has always stuck in my mind was if a player comes up to you and wants to argue a point of sorts. The ref’s response should be: “Be Brief or Be Gone.”

There were a few classics in there that I can’t recall. (Didn’t do any SHakespeare in Kroonstad  )

  • To kick or not to kick, that is the question
whether it’s nobler to carry the ball and suffer the tackles of the opposition
or to kick out of hand and be accused a coward.
    To sidestep, perchance to spin
    Aye there’s the rub
for in that athletic spin will you really slip the tackle
to step, to spin no more
for will the referee be able to see the ball grounded at the bottom of that ruck.

yeah that is the regular wors that is red in the regular section of the supermarket, but when you go into the enclosed pork section then the wors is the lighter colour.

I have never tried the pure beef wors, it just looks to red.

  • I worked on a hog farm for a couple of weeks once. All the guys that worked there shaved their heads. I didn’t know why until after the two weeks and it took me two months to get the smell out of my hair. And they were considered a very clean operation. Of course I must say the going away party with the pig roasted on a spit over an open fire was really good.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 69) : Mexican hot is just hot peppers and cumin. No other spices really, kind of boring. Growing up in Durban, of course curry was a huge part of my diet, and more Southern Indian style, more seafood, and red curries. Not much Tandoori (too dry). Other Asian curries tend to be yellow and green which I don’t like quite as much as the red, but just my personal preference. Curry flavour is so much more complex than chili.

2nd is I truely believe alot of the senior players are well jaded and need a break , Juan,Schalk,Jean too name a few are running on empty…hell look at Habanas form..

Come on Bryce, JF had a good game, but so did Adi – he turned the tackler in order for Steyn to steal their ball in their last attack, for example.

Big questions remain of our decision-making, especially in terms of kicking ball away, as well as our refusal to run the secondary channels.

I do think that their are definite signs of the players not playing to the coaches philosophy – something has to give.

They have been at it since the WC …3 weeks is squat..how bout CC,super14.

I understand you’re pissed at the performance but take a diff angle on it..they have been below par…and why is the question..

    @try time (Comment 248) :

I’m not blaming them..just pointing out that to me..they look way of the pace that we know they can play.

It was a tough super14 for the Stormers players with that late surge and then the CC..it all adds up.

Agree fully with that – so we had a shit ref – can’t change that, so adapt ffs!

Anyway, our technique and decision-making is really poor on the whole – and the wings really aren’t being freed up, although they are both great runners.

Of course it doesn’t help that we were struggling in the scrums, but we should still have had more possession, but for the kicking.

To be honest, this team is looking more and more like the 2008 S14 Sharks – structureless, and when we do build a foundation, we fail, through poor execution, to get expansive.

Any team in the world would pick Habana and Schalk to start – they have proven their class over and over again.

And trust me, if Jake was still coach, he would also have started with them.

    @try time (Comment 262) :
How many penalties did Schalk give away today by the way? Think he is being largely ineffective at the moment, but for that very questionable position for a “shoulder charge”, he wasn’t penalised at all.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 265) : how many knocks has habana made in the last 6 months. 1 try in 11 bok matches. lets look at form before name brands. schalk is ineffective. so he can run like a bulldozer doesn’t make you a great player. beast does that but he also performs at his job as prop. how much ball does schalk get of rucks. isn’t that his job. he is average at best.

  • Fields of Athenry

    By a lonely prison wall
I heard a young girl calling
Micheal they are taking you away
    For you stole Trevelyn’s corn
So the young might see the morn.
Now a prison ship lies waiting in the bay.

    Chorus
Low lie the Fields of Athenry
Where once we watched the small free birds fly.
Our love was on the wing
we had dreams and songs to sing
It’s so lonely ’round the Fields of Athenry.

    By a lonely prison wall
I heard a young man calling
Nothing matters Mary when you’re free,
Against the Famine and the Crown
I rebelled they ran me down
Now you must raise our child with dignity.

    Chorus

    By a lonely harbour wall
She watched the last star falling
As that prison ship sailed out against the sky
Sure she’ll wait and hope and pray
For her love in Botany Bay
It’s so lonely ’round the Fields of Athenry.

    Chorus
