The 14th edition of the Super Rugby tournament kicks off in Dunedin on Friday, February 13 when the Highlanders host the ACT Brumbies in a Trans-Tasman clash, according to the official draw which was released on Monday.

Rugbyweek reports that the Perth-based Western Force host the Blues later on the same evening as the competition takes its Australian bow and the Johannesburg-based Lions receive the Central Cheetahs from Bloemfontein in a local derby as the first evening’s play is completed in South Africa.

The defending champion Crusaders begin their 2009 Super 14 campaign with a New Zealand derby match against the Chiefs in Christchurch the following day.

The Crusaders launch their hunt for an eighth Super Rugby crown on Saturday, February 14 as the 2008 semi-finalists join the fray.

Losing finalists, the NSW Waratahs, travel to the Hurricanes in the following match for a meeting between two of 2008’s semi-finalists.

The final remaining semi-finalists – the Durban-based Sharks – travel down the South African coast to meet the Stormers in Cape Town.

The competition retains its top-four play-off format for 2009 with the semi-finals set down for the weekend of May 22/23.

The 94-match tournament reaches its climax with the final a week later on May 30.

  • CHEETAHS – Any other team and I would have gievn them a damn good chance at making the play-offs with this draw.

They play the Canes and the Blues at “neutral” venues and those away wins could be vital. And then ONE away game after returning from the antipodes.

I’m afraid that the Cheetahs don’t have the depth through.

    WEEK 1 – Lions Johannesburg
    WEEK 2 – W Force Perth
    WEEK 3 – Reds Brisbane
WEEK 4 – Hurricanes New Plymouth
WEEK 5 – Blues North Harbour

Dammit, but the Sharks have a nice draw. We really just need to make sure we hit the Stormers HARD on Valentines day. A loss in that fixture could upset the applecart

  • WOW! Fantastic draw this for the Sharks!

I see the only tough teams we play on tour are the Blues (who we dealt with last year away too if memory serves) and the Force (who weren’t looking to hot this year).

If we can get 4 wins out of the first 6 games we’ll be sitting pretty.

  • Okay Based on the draw above my revised potential travel schedule looks like this:

WEEK 7 – Brumbies – This game is actually the day before Bri’s 30th bday
    WEEK 8 – Hurricanes
    WEEK 10 – Crusaders

Currently week 7 is seeming like the best option bc it is early enough in the year that I’ll have enough time before may to pull together any financial resources I may need for a hopeful quickie trip the end of May. Of course being that it’s Brian’s birthday weekend, it would be completely awesome I think (anyways) for him to go to the Rugby and experience my addiction first hand with a braii after to celebrate his birthday
