So there’s a lot of talk about how tired the Boks are and (of course) Tim Noakes has emerged, as he always does, repeating his tidings of doom. At the same time, we’re hearing continued mutterings from our ANZAC pals about how sick and tired we are about the Northern crew sending understrength tours down south during the mid-year international season.
Perhaps we have missed something. Why don’t we just send an understrength tour side to the Northern hemisphere? I know it was discussed, but the idea was quickly poo-pooed by SARU. Why not, though? Give the front-line Boks the 8 weeks rest they so crave and reward the young guns and fringe players who have performed consistently well in the Currie Cup.
This might just give coach de Villiers a little more leeway to experiment, break from the Jake White mould that he’s been so uncomfortably forced into. Let him pick a team of youngsters and let’s see how they do against the Northern hemisphere’s finest. At worst, we learn a little more about the aptitude of certain fringe players for test rugby, while taking a few painful results. At best, we could potentially still win up there and add much-needed competition for test places.
Let’s face it; the guys who are there look like they couldn’t be bothered and would rather be anywhere but. Why not leave them behind and tour with a fresh-faced bunch who are willing to go through the wall for the team and the coach, to prove that they belong? The exercise of experimenting with John Smit at tighthead and Ruan Pienaar at flyhalf could still have continued in such a setting, given that neither have really played all that much rugby this season.
Consider the following line-up and tell me, honestly, given current form, if you think they would have laboured to a four-point win over Scotland?
1 Heinke van der Merwe, 2 Adriaan Strauss, 3 John Smit, 4 Danie Rossouw, 5 Johann Muller, 6 Hein Brussow, 7 Jean Deysel, 8 Duane Vermeulen, 9 Heini Adams, 10 Ruan Pienaar, 11 Jongi Nokwe, 12 Wynand Olivier, 13 Jacque Fourie, 14 Odwa Ndungane, 15 Tiger Mangweni
What do you think, guys? Am I out on a crazy limb, as usual? Or might there be some merit to the arguement?Tweet
