Have we missed a trick?

So there’s a lot of talk about how tired the Boks are and (of course) Tim Noakes has emerged, as he always does, repeating his tidings of doom. At the same time, we’re hearing continued mutterings from our ANZAC pals about how sick and tired we are about the Northern crew sending understrength tours down south during the mid-year international season.

Perhaps we have missed something. Why don’t we just send an understrength tour side to the Northern hemisphere? I know it was discussed, but the idea was quickly poo-pooed by SARU. Why not, though? Give the front-line Boks the 8 weeks rest they so crave and reward the young guns and fringe players who have performed consistently well in the Currie Cup.

This might just give coach de Villiers a little more leeway to experiment, break from the Jake White mould that he’s been so uncomfortably forced into. Let him pick a team of youngsters and let’s see how they do against the Northern hemisphere’s finest. At worst, we learn a little more about the aptitude of certain fringe players for test rugby, while taking a few painful results. At best, we could potentially still win up there and add much-needed competition for test places.

Let’s face it; the guys who are there look like they couldn’t be bothered and would rather be anywhere but. Why not leave them behind and tour with a fresh-faced bunch who are willing to go through the wall for the team and the coach, to prove that they belong? The exercise of experimenting with John Smit at tighthead and Ruan Pienaar at flyhalf could still have continued in such a setting, given that neither have really played all that much rugby this season.

Consider the following line-up and tell me, honestly, given current form, if you think they would have laboured to a four-point win over Scotland?

1 Heinke van der Merwe, 2 Adriaan Strauss, 3 John Smit, 4 Danie Rossouw, 5 Johann Muller, 6 Hein Brussow, 7 Jean Deysel, 8 Duane Vermeulen, 9 Heini Adams, 10 Ruan Pienaar, 11 Jongi Nokwe, 12 Wynand Olivier, 13 Jacque Fourie, 14 Odwa Ndungane, 15 Tiger Mangweni

What do you think, guys? Am I out on a crazy limb, as usual? Or might there be some merit to the arguement?

    Honestly , I don’t know Rob…maybe it would’ve worked.
All I know is that losing to Wales and Scotland would’ve broken my heart…irrespective of the squad we sent.

Who do we have on the bench in this magic squad of yours?

And players needed to be rested for the CC!!!

  • I would be all for this kind of tour, but i am not sure many of the fans could tolerate losing test matches.

Then again i believe we could pick a squad that could still compete admirable if not smash one or tow of the teams we encounter. The current bunch aren’t exactly setting the world on fire…at least a bunch of greenhorns would have the experience and excitement of touring with the Boks as opposed to carrying tackle bags.

If anything Boks shouldn’t play in the Currie Cup.

  • I like the idea Rob. I also think that the public would hopefully be less critical with PdeV if the results were not the greatest. I t would also do wonders for blooding our second stringers who for the most part will in any way be close to the main squad.

  • Sorry Rob, my bad.

    Peter Bills is a chop

“He blamed the laws at the breakdown and claimed they were taking away South Africa’s strength. “I don’t understand the breakdowns any more and I don’t understand the laws around them.

“They are taking all our needle and strength away. The mauling was taken away and now the collision area is getting so soft. We can’t use our strength and that’s had a direct impact on our results.”

I tend to agree with Div on this issue – the contact points are becoming much to touchy feely…whats the point of clearing someone out if you have to stop and ask politely before smashing them.

Keeping with a wide range of topics of this comment, i am also no longer a huge fan of some of these ELV’s especially the carrying of the ball back into the 22 area.. this has created a lot of senseless down the middle kicking that has become a blight on the game.

IRB you Ma’s se….you know the rest. Paterson isn’t fit to ref and u9 girls match, and i am sure fans of Scotland will agree with me.

And while we at it – Bafana you beauty.

    Maybe I need to elaborate.

Rest the Boks in the CC, apart from those that need obvious game time like Smit did this year.

Then take your top Boks on tour, to keep momentum and win test matches, and then include the promising guys from the CC on tour with them, expose them to the culture, let them play in combinations you want to see and pull them into the senior side if there is an injury crisis.

Thats where we hurt. If we lose this one I think it will be in the oven and rucks. I am pretty sure our backs will fire on their cylinders and we have a great bench of gamebreakers.

  • Sorry maybe I am wrong but I think they want the players to stay on their feet in the rucks. Surely if you have two hard men to battle this its better then one. Juan is more around the rucks and is used as a carrier or bull ram. We have Spies to do that and we have to take the ball through more phases then last time. Myself think this combo will work much better specially vs the Poms.

Four surgeons were taking a coffee break and were discussing their work. The first said, “I think accountants are the easiest to operate on. You open them up and everything inside is numbered.”

The second said, “I think librarians are the easiest to operate on. You open them up and everything inside is in alphabetical order.”

The third said, “I like to operate on electricians. You open them up and everything inside is color-coded.”

The fourth one said, “I like to operate on lawyers. They’re heartless, spineless, gutless, and their heads and their ass are interchangeable.”

  • From thetimes.co.za:

Jake White has joined some of Peter de Villiers’s critics by suggesting that some of the Bok players should have been rested for the tour of Britain.

White, when he was coach, took a B team on the overseas leg of last year’s Tri-Nations. He suggests De Villiers should have done the same on this tour.
White, who arrives in England this weekend to spend time with his friend, Eddie Jones, at the Saracens club, questioned De Villiers’s refusal to use South African players who are now based in Europe.
He specifically mentioned front-ranker CJ van der Linde, who has joined Leinster in Ireland, and flyhalf Butch James, who is playing for English club Bath (this was before Van der Linde was called up yesterday).
Speaking to The Times of London ahead of tomorrow’s Test against England, White said: “It’s tough at Twickenham. You need a goalkicker and that’s one concern for South Africa.”
In an interview with The Guardian, he warned that De Villiers’s selections were undermining the touring side’s chances of victory tomorrow.
“To me [ignoring Boks playing in Europe] doesn’t make any sense,” said White. “We haven’t got a flyhalf, while Butch James has been playing unbelievable rugby at Bath.”
