RWC 2007 replay!!!??? Well not really.

England has six players left from their 2007 RWC Final match 22, the Springboks have eleven. That may lead some of us to think this should be an easy win. Rugby doesn’t work like that though.

This game will be anything but one-sided.

I expect there will be more than just the odd tense moment in this match-up and Nigel Owens will do well to keep a beady eye out for unnecessary niggle from either team.

Springbok bruiser Bakkies Botha went on record this week as saying “beating England means a lot to South Africans” and “There is nothing you are not prepared to do for your team to win.” Botha has never beaten England at Twickenham and will be doing his damndest to make sure he manages to get that box ticked this afternoon.

Matt Stevens, also a South African, on the otherhand has always been on the losing side when England have played South Africa, anywhere in the world.

With a high of only 5 Degrees Celsius predicted for Twickenham, expect most of the heat to be coming off the field.

KSA prediction: Boks to win by less than 10 points without at any stage being comfortably ahead. Expect a nail-biter.

Kick-off at Twickenham at 14:30 GMT (16:30 RSA)

Referee: Nigel Owens (Wales)
Assistant referees: Alain Rolland (Ireland), Romain Poite (France)
TMO: Peter Allan (Scotland)

    Did you know?

Matt’s family still live in South Africa, running the family game reserves and hotel business.

His off-field activities have taken him into the news pages when his singing saw him reach the final of ITV’s The X Factor: Battle of the Stars in 2006. He was mentored by Sharon Osbourne and came second, losing to Lucy Benjamin. Moreover, his television appearances enabled him to raise £125,000 for the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund so dear to him.

He is very musical, playing guitar as well as singing and recorded a charity version of The Gambler, the song made famous by Kenny Rogers, which became popular with the England squad during RWC 2007.

He also enjoys scuba diving and cooking while his favourite snack is roasted macadamia nuts.

After buying a scooter, he initially had problems getting a helmet – none would fit his head.

The Aussies and Kiwi’s always get Kaplan, Lawrence or Jonker and we get Poms or Welshman who spoil the game!

  • I would have liked to see a loose forward combination of Burger, Spies and Kanko for this game.

This is not the England of old that had Richard Hill, Neil Back and Lawrence Dallaglio in the backrow. For that England side you needed to select a muscular loose forward trio, but with this current Pom pack, I reckon a more skillful combo would do the business!

  • guys, i have been scarce lately, busy like a mf, moving end of year etc.

anyway, couldn’t watch the game, had a bachelors on a farm with no dstv, and it is my birthday today!

in 2003 day after my bdat (23rd nov) we lost that 53-3 game, today is revenge. headline on keo is “scattergun boks blast pathetic poms” wtf is that eh? essentially it says we were kak and only won cos england are kak, what crap.

Indeed he did… don’t give him a big head though…

Good to read through this thread as I was out last night and it wasn’t televised anyway…

I’ll happily lose $160 to the TAB again for a Pom thumping…

Still sounds like, from the comments here, there’s a bit of ironing out to be done… but surely the momentum heading into the Lions tour must have been grabbed back?

Pity Juan Yster Smith wasn’t able to be there to watch…

JPP definitely my favourite player this tour… actually all the Sharks have been…

Dude – he is playing at a level that Habana was at in 2007.

Not nearly as many try-scoring chances, but his defence and positional play is awesome, and his ability to break a tackle, make a clean break or even just stay on his feet makes lots of opportunities for others.

Yep indeed… it was evident for those who actually watched him during the S14… despite the ball not moving to his side of the paddock on attack…

Even his kicking has become effortless and precise…

  • @bryce_in_oz (Comment 192) : Between JPP and Odwa, the Sharks have two of the hardest working wings around. Both are always looking for work and popping up all over the field. The best part about JPP is his attitude, did anyone see him after the game while they were taking a lap of honour? He was always laughing, enjoying every moment…he was having a lekker lag, and just seems to be enjoying every moment of his Bok career. Great to see!

Yeah he is a funny bugger. always has a “you don’t know what I have been up to” grin on his face. Especially after the CC Final and last night as well.

And he deserves it as well. He had a very below average S14 and just kept his head down knowing the form would come back.

    AND IT HAS.

Oubaas, I cant agree with that, and you know I have been saying this all year, so forgive me for latching on this.

JPP did NOT have a bad S14 – he didnt score any tries, but think back to his positional play, his tackling, his fielding of the high ball, and his ability to make space for other players.

Those were previously major gripes about him, even when he was scoring a shedload of tries last year (think back to those special “JP” moments that prompted Dick Muir to defend him against Shark supporters.

I think that what he has very successfully worked at this year is improving his skills, working out his weaknesses, and playing as a team member.

I thought he had a good S14 in that sense, and we are merely reaping the rewards of an awful lot of hard work on his part here.

That tackle on Monye especially was superb – he lifted him shoulder high and then marched him back 10 metres.

Would we have seen that last year?

In my eyes, JPP, Beast and Adi are examples of coaching staff getting the best out of players – well done to them!

Okay let me re-phrase he had a below average S14 from a try scoring Point of view.

He was the leading try scorer (12) in 2007 and then in 2008 he didn’t score a single try.

I have not been one of the guys to moan about JPP, even when he had an off-colour S14 he was still one of the best around.

whether he waited for the form to come back or whether he worked harder to get it to comeback is not really something that I have an issue with. It is back and it makes me much happier about the coming S14.
