Jones praises Jantjes

Former Springbok technical adviser Eddie Jones has praised Conrad Jantjes as his man of the Springbok season, and gushed with praise at the Boks’ 42-6 demolition of England at Twickenham on Saturday.

SuperRugby reports that Jones, a former Wallaby coach who now is Director of Rugby at Saracens, wrote in his column in Afrikaans Sunday newspaper Sondag that the recipe for success was simple for the Boks.

“Any one of Ruan Pienaar, Schalk Burger or Ricky Januarie could have been the man of the match, but Ricky deserves it.

” Even though the Boks didn’t play well in their previous two games, the traditional game against the English brought the best out of them and Martin Johnson’s side had to bow to a much better side.

“The Boks kept things simple and did the basics amazingly well. The way they played for each other in the game, was a telling remark about their commitment and every player was ready to bleed for the man next to him.

“Bakkies was the fire in the belly again, and Schalk ended the season with an exclamation mark next to his name, but the player who has impressed me the entire season has been fullback Conrad Jantjes.

“He might not have done anything exceptional, but he was the most consistent player in the Springbok team this season and has established himself as the perfect successor to Percy Montgomery.”

England flyhalf Danny Cipriani is not up to playing international rugby and Jones slammed his performance.

Jones said that he didn’t believe Cipriani was up to modern international rugby.

“I repeat what I said last week – Danny Cipriani is a long way from being an international flyhalf,” Jones wrote, “I have not seen him play well on one occasion I have watched him.”

and in Afrikaans nogal   English press must have shunned him.

I don’t agree with his call at all BTW. I would give it to JdV.

  • You also can’t fault Adi’s strike rate either. What about the massive amount of work someone like Beast get’s through? He’s been a revelation and hard to believe this is only his first year of international rugby. Even more creditworthy when you note that about 3 years ago he was a flank!

  • I think we have a fanatstic backline and Adi has been this years revelation. To think we have 2 outside centres with the quality of Adi & Mossie. We are truly blessed. I think that there is only one way to improve our backline. PLEASE PLAY STEYN AT FULLBACK

  • Personally i like a fullback that is safe and dependable. Not a hot head who thinks he can beat anyone.

    Steyns time will come.

  • @robdylan (Comment 15) : Is there an award for biggest up yours to the public and experts for a lack of belief in a player? That is the one Adi should get.
I was not entirely convinced but could find precious little to fault in his great season.

  • @robdylan (Comment 22) : I guess, but i have always thought of centres as pairs

Bunce & Little. Horan & Little {?} Jdv & Fourie etc

@beez (Comment 23) : Yea agreed. He really shut alot of people up this season

  • @Worcestershire Sauce (Comment 25) : I’m sorry, but given that both are equally good, I see the inclusion of Adi ahead of Fourie as completely justified using the “merit with bias” qualification.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 27) :

Dependable, steady, average… but unfortunately the most predictable of all the backline and with limitations that are important as a 15… tactical kicking game is not up to scratch, cannot seem to join the line on attack and his passing is well for the lack of a better word… passable…

Dependable? I don’t quite agree – he sometimes gets a brain fart and tries to goose-step his way past defenders – inevitably not succeeding.

Was the best SA 15 in the S14 and CC, but hasn’t impressed at Test level.

Best game was against the Scots ironically… he was ‘dependable’…

Not like he is new to the scene either… I think after this season… that’s as much as he’s got to offer…

Tick tock… Steyn and Kirchner on the dock…
