Is he the guy Snor accused of trying to act white?

All in all quite accurate awards particularly Jean in the end… to come back from injury and turn the Stormer’s S14 campaign around and a good Bok season… well deserved… had hoped Snor would make him VC for the tour…

  • @Big Fish (Comment 70) :

    Morning guys…

Not a fan of Mr. Sim as well…

    These awards sucked…
*The Currie Cup Team struggled with injuries and all the other challenges and managed to win the cup – and they give it to those dudes who were walloped by the waratahs???

*Beast scrummed and tackled his heart out in the Super 14, Tri-Nations, Currie Cup (and EOYT)…and they give it to Ebersohn??? WTF???

*The CC player award was marginal…but I would’ve given it to Stefan as well. Deysel was out with injuries for part of the season and plus he’s a young man…old man Stef carried us through- he deserves something before he retires  . Can’t complain much cos it went to a Shark though.

    Yip he is.

I also have no problem with him getting the award, I have used enough of his articles and i think he is pretty good.

Thats the one – but that isn’t the reason I am unimpressed of course – just don’t think much of his acumen, or objectivity generally.

    @blckshrk – BUCS (Comment 73) :
Some of the awards were strange to say the least!

Most of the media had the results by yesterday afternoon. All that I know of honoured the disclosure embargo – well all except him, seemingly.

    Simnikiwe Xabanisa: Up and Under

    From times.co.za :

IT’S the end of a year in which the Springbok faithful would have been split into the half-full and the half-empty.

Many will see 2008 as a year of missed opportunity, others as a revolutionary season in which the platform was put in place for world sporting domination by South Africa.Either way, we got our money’s worth in these credit-crunch times.

To round the year off, the honours go to:
Player of the year: The most improved facet of the Springboks’ play was scrummaging, so Beast Mtawarira shades out Jean de Villiers.

Match of the year: One loves to see the Boks put big scores on Australia and England, but the squeak home against the All Blacks in Dunedin, the first win in New Zealand in a decade, gets it.

Best tackle: Of all the places fullback Delon Armitage would expect to see lock Bakkies Botha, the corner flag — after being tracked down for half the field — was not it.

Quote of the year: Take your pick from any of Bok coach Peter de Villiers’s press conferences. My favourite was: “If you want to run with the big dogs, you’ve got to lift a leg.”

Best call: De Villiers mistakenly calling Danny Cipriani “Capriati”. De Villiers was later proved right in the game against England. Let’s just say Cipriani played well behind the baseline, if such a thing exists in rugby.

Coach of the year: Rassie Erasmus. Does anyone remember the shambles the Stormers were last year? To borrow from Kaizer Chiefs’ Muhsin Ertugral, even a gardener could have coached the Sharks.

Team of the year: The Sharks. Hell, they could have given a few international sides a run for their money.

Best referee: Mark Lawrence. He came back from a horrible car smash to establish himself as a respected ref in South Africa.

One to watch: A content, confident Ruan Pienaar at flyhalf. And one hopes that Griquas’ lively scrumhalf, Sarel Pretorius, gets a place in one of the Super 14 squads.

Try of the year: Ricky Januarie’s match winner against the All Blacks in Dunedin. If you watch the replay from the front, note how he takes the ball on the bounce with one hand at full tilt.

The yes-no-wait award: Bakkies Botha’s vain attempt to get out of his lengthy contract with the Bulls to make a few quick euros playing for Toulon.

Biggest comeback: In a year in which Pierre Spies, Luke Watson and Gcobani Bobo made comebacks in the Bok team, Adrian Jacobs was the one guy who took his chance best, five years since his last appearance for the Boks.

Administrator of the year: Carried over to next year, again.
