The beautiful city of George is once more gripped in Sevens fever as the final preparations get underway for the 2008 Emirates Airline SA Sevens tournament at the Outeniqua Park Stadium.

SA Rugby reports that the thrilling victory of the Springbok Sevens team last weekend in Dubai has no doubt added an extra element of excitement and local rugby fans have welcomed the sixteen international teams with open arms.

Earlier today the captains of the participating teams attended the Absa International Captains Signing Session at the local Absa bank branch in York Street. A good couple of hundred enthusiastic Sevens supporters attended the event, which was carried live by the local radio station Eden FM.

The Captains’ Singing Session is a firm favourite with the local rugby fans. England and New Zealand sent their entire squads to the event, while the Springbok Sevens players will stage their own autograph session tomorrow from 12h00 at the Garden Route Mall. The Springbok Sevens signing session is organised annually in conjunction with Sasol, the National Team Sponsor.

Meanwhile all teams continued with their on-field preparations for this year’s tournament, which starts on Friday.

South Africa had a fitness session and later a light workout and the Bok Sevens will return to their Saasveld training field later this afternoon for some more training.

The team is due to play a warm-up match tomorrow morning against Zimbabwe and they will wrap up their preparations on Thursday morning with the customary Captain’s Run.

The City of George will welcome the participating teams, match officials, sponsors and IRB officials at a function tonight in nearby Herolds Bay.

Injured SA Sevens captain Neil Powell joined his team mates today and he will be in George for the remainder of the week. SA Sevens coach, Paul Treu, was meanwhile forced to make a change to one of the replacements who were initially called up as cover for the injured Marius Schoeman.

Schoeman, the team’s most experienced player, injured his wrist in Dubai and the injury has ruled him out of action for the home leg of the IRB Sevens World Series.

Treu called uncapped Ian Adendorff and Sampie Mastriet to the squad, but he was informed last night that Mastriet was injured. Mlindazwe Nqoro was instead added to the squad and both newcomers took part in the today’s early field-session.

Schoeman, the team’s most experienced player, injured his wrist in Dubai and the injury has ruled him out of action for the home leg of the IRB Sevens World Series.

There are still a limited number of reserved tickets available and rugby fans can secure their seats by booking them at Computicket or buying it directly from the ticket office at Outeniqua Park.

  • Mlindazwe Nqoro in for Mastriet who never even left home after his call up, it seems.

    Full Name Mlindazwe
    Surname Nqoro
    Height 177cm
    Weight 85kg

Shorter than, but heavier than Mastriet.

I think he played damn well in Dubai, but did not rate his CC performances as anything more than good.

I am keen to see if he can reproduce his DXB form in George.

Taking a season away from S14 can only be good for him in the longrun. It would be interesting to see where he goes after graduating from 7s to 15s

  • @PJLD (Comment 10) :

I agree, one of the other pics shows the strapping even better.

Ebersohn took strain in the CC already so the S14 would have broken him. And that would be a waste of a good future IMO.

  • @robdylan (Comment 13) :

He is not a small chap but he has to gain some physical maturity and then he will be more than fine at 15s IMO.
