Lions coach Eugene Eloff says the new depth in vital positions has given him a lot hope this year.
Rugby 365 reports that a number of experienced players have made a welcome return to the Jo’ burg outfit in 2009 with Andre Pretorius ( injury) Lawrence Sephaka (overseas), Jannes Labuschagne (out of retirement) and centre Jaque Fourie (injury)
Wing Henno Mentz brings experience from the Sharks, and former Cheetahs centre Barry Goodes returns from Italy while Ashwin Willemse is back from an unhappy stint in Biarritz.
“The big thing this season is our depth [referring to the return of the experienced players],” a delighted Eloff told Business Day.
“Guys like Andre, Lawrence Sephaka [prop], Jannes Labuschagne [lock] and Jaque Fourie [centre] add a lot of confidence in the team set-up.”
“So we are pleased that we now have depth in a lot of positions.”
While Eloff is happy that he will be able to call on a fit squad and quality back up players, he highlighted the need to stick with a winning team.
“There is a good spirit in the camp since the guys arrived back from their break and they are training well,’ said Eloff.
“Everyone is fit and ready to play except for loose forwards Ernst Joubert [hand] and Dewald Senekal [hamstring], who are carrying injuries.
“[But] Consistency in selection is important in any team and that is one of the factors that have counted in our favour in the past,” he saidTweet
