The squads of the five South African Vodacom Super 14 teams will be named on February 6, SA Rugby confirmed on Tuesday.

The SARU Website reports that the announcement was made following a meeting between SA Rugby personnel and franchise coaches and chief executives in Johannesburg.
“It was a very good, positive meeting which allowed us to update the teams on Super Rugby matters and confirm a date for the naming of squads,” said Andy Marinos, the acting managing director of SA Rugby.

“The teams updated us on their injury situations and in the first week of February there will be a series of meetings between the individual coaches, Peter de Villiers, the selectors and myself before the submission of the final squads on February 6.”

The franchises were also updated on the outcomes of a SANZAR technical meeting in Sydney on December 4, including a briefing on the Laws from SARU referees’ manager Andre Watson. The franchises were also advised on the state of discussions regarding possible Super Rugby expansion and also discussed the commercial aspects around the alternatives.

  • Why can’t they just name them now? Surely if a player gets injured they can simply be replaced.

  • @robdylan (Comment 5) : That’s what I was thinking. They’re not bound by any rules to stick to the named squads are they?

  • If you are named in squad a can you later change to squad b for instance.

In the same season that is.

  • @McLovin (Comment 7) : oh right… maybe that’s the limitation. I don’t think you can.

But still, there is virtually no horse trading in SA anyway

  • I can’t understand that we always wait until the last minute to name our squads…like we are still figuring out who should be there unlike NZ who named their squads last year and then just train!
