It’s that time of the year again and slowly but surely things are falling into place for the kick-off of the 2009 Super 14. And what would the Super 14 be without a Sharksworld Superbru pool?

Even though we are running our own prediction competition for this year’s Super 14 competition in which we will be giving away tickets to see the Sharks and the Springboks play the british Lions, we will still be running our regular Superbru competition by popular demand.

The Pool Name is: Sharksworld (as usual)
The Pool Code is: pumayogi

We will have a prize for the winner of this competition as well. Just what that might be, still has to be clarified but it will definitely be as good as the two prizes we are giving away for our very own JustRugby competitions.

Last year we were the second biggest pool in Superbru. Let’s get those invites, to friends, out so that we can be the biggest this year.

  • Oh and if you want to pick a winner more often than not, it is always good to go back into history of the competition.

Here is the list of the best teams ranked 1 to 14 over the history of the competition using the IRB ranking system done by Pick and Go.

    1 Crusaders (New Zealand) 87.8923
    2 Waratahs (Australia) 84.1922
    3 Stormers (South Africa) 83.5516
    4 Blues (New Zealand) 82.8286
    5 Sharks (South Africa) 82.7554
    6 Hurricanes (New Zealand) 82.1277
    7 Bulls (South Africa) 81.1403
    8 Chiefs (New Zealand) 80.2531
    9 Brumbies (Australia) 79.5587
    10 Force (Australia) 79.3166
    11 Highlanders (New Zealand) 75.7118
    12 Reds (Australia) 74.9204
    13 Lions (South Africa) 74.1383

  • Being a Stormers fan I am quite happy with those rankings.

However the reasonable, logic & fair side of me has to question it somewhat.

Sharks have been runners up 3 times & semi finalists 3 times.

So out of 13 tournament they reached the paly-offs 6 times.

Stormers have made the semi’s twice out of 12 tournaments.

Does not quite add up in my books.

Only comparing the stats from the Stormers and Sharks.

Sharks have won 47.7% of their matches. Stormers 45.7%

Sharks average points difference per match 0.08, Stomers -3.10.

Sharks average log points per match 2.50, Stormers 2.31.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 27) :

You will have to look long and hard… :)

The only thing I said about the IRB ranking system is that it is skewed during the World Cup where more points are rewarded to teams winning than at any other time outside the tournament. Only flaw in my view.

As for this formula, it works as follow.

What points you gain the other team loses (your direct opposition). For instance, if you get 2 points in a game, the oppo loses 2 points and the ranking points are adjusted accordingly.

If both were on 85 for instance the one would move to 87, the other to 83. Now the team itself only loses or gains two points, but the difference between the two teams is 4, so the loser would have lost 4 points against that specific team while only moving down 2 on the log.

In addition, the margin of victory or losing plays a role.

If you win by 15 or more points you get more ranking points, similarly if you lose by 15 or more you lose more. If you lose by less than 15 (or win by 15) you don’t gain as much ranking points.

In addition, home and away victories/losses also plays a part, you get more for an away victory, and lose more for an away win.

Now for quite a while a couple of years ago the Stormers beat all SA teams for a couple of years running, meaning they opened up a nice gap between them and the rest.

Which is why they are still up there I believe.

Dust that rowing machine off and join us. It’s a blast.

  • I’m joining the fitness movement.

Did my first jog (waddle?) in yonks last week – up Newlands Hill nogals, and also did my first FULL-ON gym session last week as well.

    I was broken…

    Smile.

I Kakked my broek when I ran my first timed 4k a few months ago and came back at 23min somechange after running as hard as I could.

On Sunday Night i pushed a bit AFTER a spin class and run sub 20min for the same 4 k route.

What i am trying to say is “Most bodies are broken in the beginning but the healing process is fun”

I have a little thing that i DON’T do, I don’t adjust my watch strap. My watch is now like a titanium bracelet rather than a watch strap.

Have lost 9kg’s in a little over 4 months.
