Sharks name strong team

The shock inclusion of Luzuko Vulindlu at right wing is the main talking point of the Sharks team named to take on the Bulls in Durban on Wednesday night. Most of the Sharks first-choice players will be in action, although John Smit will be the only front-line prop on display.

As reported yesterday, injuries to both du Plessis brothers, as well as looseheads Beast Mtawarira and Deon Carstens have robbed coach John Plumtree of options in the front row. John Smit will be at tighthead with young Melusi Mthethwa and Craig Burden making up the balance. Journeyman utility frontrow Frik Venter will be on the bench with Dave Hawksworth, another former Durban schoolboy who has been on the local club scene for some time. The first choice lock pairing of Steven Sykse and Johann Muller will play, with Alistair Hargreaves and Justin Downey bracketed on the bench.

An injury to Jacques Botes sees Skholiwe Ndlovu elevated to the starting side, where he joins stalwarts Jean Deysel and Ryan Kankowski in the loose trio. Botes has been bracketed with Keegan Daniel as the loose forward replacement.

Apart from Vulindlu, in at right wing for Odwa Ndungane (on the bench), the backline appears to be the exact unit that is likely to be named for the Stormers clash on 14 Feb, with Rory Kockott partnering Ruan Pienaar in the halfbacks, Frans Steyn and Adi Jacobs in the centres and JP Pietersen and Stefan Terblanche at left wing and fullback respectively.

Young Ross Cronje finds himself on the bench as halfback cover – a good indication that he may have leapfrogged Charl McLeod in the official pecking order. One of Riaan Swanpoel or Chris Jordaan will operate in the number 22 shirt.

Sharks team:

15. Stefan Terblanche
14. Luzuko Vulindlu
13. Adrian Jacobs
12. Francois Steyn
11. JP Pietersen
10. Ruan Pienaar
9. Rory Kockott
8. Ryan Kankowski
7. Jean Deysel
6. Skholiwe Ndlovu
5. Johann Muller
4. Steven Sykes
3. John Smit
2. Craig Burden
1. Melusi Mthethwa

Reserves: 16. Frik Venter, 17. Dave Hawksworth, 18. Alistair Hargreaves/ Justin Downey, 19. Jacques Botes/Keegan Daniel, 20. Ross Cronje, 21. Odwa Ndungane, 22. Chris Jordaan/Riaan Swanepoel

  • Perhaps the Bulletjies kids will not be such walk overs after all. The Stormers are always getting crap because of their feather duster front row. This Sharks front is not much better. I just hope for your sakes that that they all recover before the S14 actually starts.

Mthethwa’s not such a bad scrummager, though… he should be able to handle Mxoli.

  • Looks like a strong team that have played a good few games together…

    Only 3 :?: ‘s
I don’t know either Luzuko or Melusi and never seen them play so cannot comment on them…
But I don’t rate Skholiwe…he is not physical at all and cannot seem to keep up to the pace of the rest of the Sharks loose forwards…I have never seen him steal possession either…so I surely hope that the Sharks do not need to stoop to his level as back-up in the loosies…
But should Botes and Daniel be fit they should not need to…

The rest seem pretty strong…even with Burden there…he is by no means Bizzy…but he always seems to bring an added spark to the Sharks side when he comes on…

  • If the Sharks manage their players well….and not get many injuries or have pretty much their starting side at the back-end of the comp…they very strong contenders for the title….

We’ve been going on about our youngsters, the likes of Barra, Skho, Downey etc….now is the time to see what they are made of. They’ll be playing alongside experienced campaigners…and I think they will do well…good luck boys!

I actually don’t think we should be under pressure to post a huge score here.

The main point is to get our basic combinations right…without overexerting ourselves…the last thing we need is more niggles…this game is just not worth all of that. We can all shout all we want- but the Super 14 starts on the 13th of February.

Yeh…but fitness management is very important too else the players can pick up injuries…

Like bring on replacement players early in a game you are winning comfortably…especially at prop/lock/loosie/9/10/12….

Or maybe add it in your preview per team.

  • @Hmmm (Comment 72) :

The NZ and Aus squads are finalised as per the previews that we did for each team. It is just the Sa teams that need finalising and I believe there will be articles up for that on Friday which is the scheduled announcement date for the SA sides.
