The Auto & General Super 14 Lions have named their side for the opening Vodacom Super 14 match to be played at Coca-Cola Park on Friday 13 February against the visiting Vodacom Cheetahs, kick-off scheduled for 7.10pm.

Sporting Springbok wings Ashwin Willemse and Henno Mentz, the former back from injury and the latter newly-signed from the Sharks, together with a largely settled side from last season, the home side will look to get the tournament off to a good start.

The GLRU website reports that flank Cobus Grobbelaar continues the leadership role, captaining the side with Springbok centre Jaque Fourie taking over the vice captaincy.

Andre Pretorius has been included in the match 22 after an horrific period of injury, but makes a more than welcome return to the side, Earl Rose starting the match at flyhalf but Pretorius expected to get game time in the latter stages of the match.

A keen interest will also be held for the debut of USA 7s and 15s flank Todd Clever who has made the move across the Atlantic to play in the Southern Hemisphere’s toughest club tournament after excelling on the International Sevens circuit. Adding a further dimension to a consistently powerful loose forward trio, Clever brings destructive ball-in-hand qualities on attack and combines this with physical defence.

The Auto & General Super 14 Lions will look to play some exciting rugby this season as evidenced by their seven try mauling of the Bulls in the preseaon and with some outstanding backs and committed forwards, there is an air of excitement surounding this team ahead of Friday night’s match.

Tickets to the match are on sale from R100 (West Lower – R100.00, West Upper – R70.00, Rest of the Stadium – R50.00, Scholars behind the post – R20.00) and fans are urged to come down and support the team in this highly-anticipated fixture.

Fishing? – is that the competition stuff where the competitors are placed between markers, have 100 meter long rods and shoot ground bait into the feeding zone with “catties” and is normally watched by 1000′s of sodden spectators. Riveting watching that.

  • This Lions side has potential. If guys like Mentz and Willemse regain their best form, they have a decent backline. 12 is a bit of a weaklink.
Could cause some upsets this season.

Cheetahs on paper look very weak. Good loose forwards and wings but not a lot else

  • Not a bad side at all…

    Good front row…
Good lock combo that created havoc in last year’s comp against big sides…
    Great loose trio…

But the jury is still out on the backline from 9 to 15 as an entity…
    We all know that:
    ? Ludik is a good 15 (but nothing special)…
? Ash and Mentz have been good in the past (but also had a lot of injuries)…
? Doppies had steady games (best I can say), although he has looked good on Fourie’s inside…
? Rose has moments of brilliance but fell way short in tight games in the CC (and all S14 games are tight)…
? Jano was good in 2006 and 2007 (but since then been ordinary)…
? Fourie is brilliant as an individual player and can bring a backline together…

But is all of that going to be enough…hopefully the 9/10/12 issue in the Cheetahs side will even that out…
