Injuries force Plum’s hand

The Sharks will go into Saturday’s crunch Super 14 opener against the Stormers with a strong starting 15, boasting 10 Springboks in the lineup. Early season injuries have robbed them of depth, though and the bench is packed with newcomers, certain to enjoy a baptism of fire at Newlands.

John Smit will start at hooker this week, with Bismarck du Plessis deemed fit enough only to play off the bench. Deon Carstens and Jannie du Plessis are the starting props, but the ongoing sternum injury keeping Beast Mtawarira off the park means that young Melusi Mthethwa will earn his first Super 14 cap in the number 17 jersey. It’s a huge gamble, as the youngster has played very little top rugby to date, but one that Plumtree will feel he has no option but to take.

Albert van den Berg’s non-availability due to off-season surgery means another debutant, Alistair Hargreaves, will provide lock cover behind the first-choice pair of Steven Sykes and captain Johann Muller. Keegan Daniel will wear the number 6 shirt, with regular open-side Jacques Botes on the bench. This is again due to the latter returning from injury. Jean Deysel and Ryan Kankowski complete the loose trio.

The backline is at full strength for this encounter and picks itself, with Rory Kockott and Ruan Pienaar operating as the halfbacks. Frans Steyn will enjoy the first of (hopefully) many starts at inside centre this season, with Bok number 13 Adi Jacobs outside him. Odwa Ndungane, JP Pietersen and Stefan Terblanche are the back three, as expected.

The worrying lack of experience on the bench continues into the backs, though, with all three replacements, Ross Cronje, Riaan Swanepoel and Luzuko Vulindlu set to enjoy their first taste of Super Rugby this weekend.

Sharks 22:
15. Stefan Terblanche, 14. Odwa Ndungane, 13. Adrian Jacobs, 12. Francois Steyn, 11. JP Pietersen, 10. Ruan Pienaar, 9. Rory Kockott, 8. Ryan Kankowski, 7. Jean Deysel, 6. Keegan Daniel, 5. Johann Muller (Captain), 4. Steven Sykes, 3. Jannie du Plessis, 2. John Smit, 1. Deon Carstens

Replacements:
16. Bismarck du Plessis, 17. Melusi Mthethwa, 18. Alistair Hargreaves, 19. Jacques Botes, 20. Ross Cronje, 21. Riaan Swanepoel, 22. Luzuko Vulindlu

  • my worries about keegan is his hot headedness. in a pressure cooker game like this he could be joining schalk on the bench.

  • Whatever happend to old Waylon? Came out with a bang and seems to have left with a whimper? He and JP both went through a major dip at the same time but JP seems to have been backed long enougth to regain some form.

Maybe just lucky for JP really good wings are few and far between but centres more available?

  • this side has me quite concerned…. and I’m not really sure why that is.

I guess it’s just that when you take Beast, Waylon and Albert out of the squad, all of a sudden it doesn’t look all that menacing.

  • So much for winning it in the last 10 minutes – we don’t seem to have much on the bench there…

We have to go at the stormers all out and hope that when the youngsters have to come in- they will have something to defend.

Very interesting Saturday ahead of us – I’m loving it!!!

  • Great front row. (Plum listened to me)
Bit thin at lock, only Muller world class
Strange loosie combo, Deysel 2nd year only and Keegan… Rate him but this is a toughie.

Bunch of new combo’s in the backline…

Looks a great Currie Cup side this!

  • yes as much as i like riaan, barritt is a huge loss. as for flyhalf, we should be ok. we aren’t the only team in the s14 that is shallow at 10. blues, crusaders, stormers, bulls, lions, cheetahs all have a shortage. it may be like just rugby, last man standing at ten wins the trophy.

  • I’m not really sure why I was expecting the backline reserve bench to look any different to this… But in the Currie Cup final, our backline reserves were Rory, Brad and Waylon… We’ve lost about 100 Super caps there.

I guess I was expecting Jordaan to get the nod ahead of Zuks, because at least he has played some Currie Cup… still, he’s also untested at this level. Stormers definitely have the upper hand here… they’ve got 100 and plenty Bok caps on the bench, for f*cks sakes…

  • @try time (Comment 27) : I am glad that he’s emerging as a talent… had my eye on him right from the start. He has very good ruck technique and made some technically brilliant cleans last year. Still, you can’t really compare him to Beast and argue that we aren’t losing something, though… The Stormers also have a youngster on the bench in Blaauw, but he’s not as raw as Barra is.

Given that neither Jannie nor Deon can be anywhere NEAR match fit at this stage, I reckon Rassie may just be right. Injuries have neutered the SHarks front row heading into this game.

Oh – and I hate to say “I told you so”, but I did…

  • @MorneN (Comment 33) : too close to call.

Look Morras, one thing that did start to emerge last year is that the Sharks team has a pretty much unshakable belief in their own abilities. You will call it arrogance, but I reckon that having the balls to BELIEVE you’re going to win is a huge motivating factor. Plum reckons that a side has to go out and do something special to beat the Sharks and I think he’s right. There is a combination of a structured game there, as well as deadly gamebreakers who can swing a match with a moment of individual brilliance.

Long-winded way of saying that I think we will still take this, but not by much.

  • @robdylan (Comment 38) :

Individual brilliance in such close games are rare.

If the Sharks are going to take this, they will have to hit early and hit hard.

If they allow the Stormers and lead of any sorts early in the game I fear those game-breakers might have brain implosions.

I was worried if Rassie was going to start with Watson because the balance of the loosies just did not look right, he did not – I think that applies now to the Sharks.

Still the better tight 5, but it is all how the backs control this game.

And I am unconvinced Ruan and Steyn has the tactical acumen to do this…

  • I did it for the Stormers so here is the tip for the Sharks…

Keep it tight, attack channels 1 and 2 religiously as the Stormers are weak at the breakdown and their forwards lazy.

Ruan and Steyn should look to put grubbers through the Grant, JDV and Bobo channels as they turn slower than milk and the Stormers back three with Koster is inexperienced as a combo with Chavanga having the worst hands I have seen in a wing in many a year.

Avoind going too wide too quickly as the Stormers are quite organised on first line defense and you will just play away from your strength which should be close-in contact around the fringes.

Run at Burger as early as possible of phases to tie him up, with him taken out of the game at rucks being tied up you will have a field day in the tight loose.

JB and B is are not injured…they’ve just recovered from injuries and they have to start somewhere…the bench seems to be the right place…

All this talk about lack of match fitness doesn’t phase me…i’s the beginning of the comp…all the teams are a bit undercooked. These guys have been working hard this past week…they should be fine and full of running.

  • @bryce_in_oz (Comment 69) : 16-they aren’t injured they are coming back from. they haven’t had time to get up to fitness. jacques played 20 minutes in the warm up game last week but was a little sluggish. so should be firing soon. mthethwa may be small, but not much smaller than deon and he plays well. Mthethwa (179cm 109kg) deon (183cm 116kg). look i wouldn’t start with him, but he is worth a chance.

ross is suspect, but plum must see something in the guy that he has leapfrogged charl.

I seriously hope for your sake you do not get any injuries…players like Luzuko can cost you close games (where a up to Standard wing would score a winning try, etc) and a few log points here and there…

Even if he does have a tough time (which I doubt he would against the Stormers front row as I cannot recall any team ever having a tough time against that front row)…they can always move Smit over to the side and bring Bizzy in at 2…

  • @robdylan (Comment 137) :

Yeh a bit on an amateur home video…blackshart disagreed with my friend (and some others) that said that he was pretty much a waste of space…so when he was up here he showed me a few clips on his cam…have to agree he was not at all good (game me very worrying back flashes to Benjamin in last year’s comp)…but think waste of space is marginally harsh…and also mentioned he might have had nerves and reminded them of Mortlock as his atrocious first test vs Arg which to some deal thanks to him Aus lost (at home)…and the next test he was MOM…
But on current facts…have to say…he def could cost you close games if does not up his game by SOME WAY…now the LIONS were never in for the title (did I really need to tell you that lol)…but they could have been a few places higher had Benjamin just caught a few balls and fell or given 5 steps and fallen…
Sharks/Brumbies/Force should all have been 3 points the other way…Chiefs (I think) 4th try bonus…etc…so he cost the LIONS at least 10/11 log points…which would have put them in the top half not?
