This is it. The game that is going to make some of us smile and some of us eat BIG helpings of humble pie is here.  And if you don’t have a ticket yet, then don’t bother going to Newlands.

Even though I am hungry, I know I don’t want to be in the pie camp this evening.

It seems that the anticipation in Cape Town has been immense.  SOLD OUT signs are up.  The Stormers Website has issued a statement that ALL tickets are sold out and that includes standing room tickets.

The Sharks and the Stormers have met 11 times in S14 history with the Stormers owning a narrow lead of 6 to 5. The Sharks have however won the last three encounters.

There has been much hype in the media surrounding this match with both coaches having frequent media campaigns to try and influence the referee.

From Rugby 365: Plumtree said victory will not be achieved through guile and brain power, or some airy-fairy tactics. The victory will be achieved by whoever dominates physically.

This promises to be one of the most physical matches of the weekend.

Will the Sharks manage to level the all time score? Or will the Stormers show that this is their season?

Venue: Newlands, Cape Town
Kick-off: 17:00 Local Time

Referee: Mark Lawrence (South Africa)
ARs: Pro Legoete (South Africa), Cobus Wessels (South Africa)
TMO: Shaun Veldsman/JC Fortuin (South Africa)

Stormers:
15 Conrad Jantjes, 14 Tonderai Chavhanga, 13 Gcobani Bobo, 12 Jean de Villiers (captain), 11 Nick Koster, 10 Peter Grant, 9 Enrico Januarie, 8 Duane Vermeulen, 7 Francois Louw, 6 Schalk Burger, 5 Andries Bekker, 4 Adrian Fondse, 3 Brian Mujati, 2 Schalk Brits, 1 JD Moller.
Replacements:
16 Deon Fourie, 17 Wikus Blaauw, 18 AJ Venter, 19 Luke Watson, 20 Bolla Conradie, 21 Joe Pietersen, 22 Percy Montgomery.

Sharks:
15 Stefan Terblanche, 14 Odwa Ndungane, 13 Adrian Jacobs, 12 Francois Steyn, 11 JP Pietersen, 10 Ruan Pienaar, 9 Rory Kockott, 8 Ryan Kankowski, 7 Jean Deysel, 6 Keegan Daniel, 5 Johann Muller (captain), 4 Steven Sykes, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 John Smit, 1 Deon Carstens.
Replacements:
16 Bismarck du Plessis, 17 Melusi Mthethwa, 18 Alistair Hargreaves, 19 Jacques Botes, 20 Ross Cronjé, 21 Riaan Swanepoel, 22 Luzuko Vulindlu.

  • Anyone know how to distinguish between nervous and excited?

I am not sure which is the emotion that keeps getting stronger and stronger as the day goes by.

  • Stormers put some extended pressure on the Sharks 22 but JdV ends it with a knock on from a poor pass. Pienaar puts it way back in Stormers territory off the scrum. Chavanga then scythes through the upcoming Sharks and the ball eventually gets kicked out outside the Sharks 22.

I have just been away from home too long with this whole moving thing and decided to stay at home with the family.

That plus I gave some other guys an opportunity to go watch a great game at a packed Newlands – I have been there and done it, so no sweat.

So my son has his Stormers jersey on, riding his bike stukkend, and we are listening to rugby on a beautiful day in CPT.

  • well…. I for one am not horrendously upset. Stormers actually should have been ahead by more than 10, given that we have just played what will hopefully be our worst half of rugby this season.

There are some signs, but we are definitely horribly underdone going into this game. Let’s hope we can find a way to burgle the points and come out firing next week.

Ruan is looking particularly out of sorts, but Steyn isn’t doing any better…

  • @MorneN (Comment 200) :

There are very few decent runs. As to if it is because the guys are undercooked or because the defence is so good????????

I think it is because the guys are undercooked. Very few defencive line visible, the guys (defencive) are all over the place.

Stormers are taking more control as the game progresses.

I was hoping for a lead by the Sharks to defend by the time our Subs came on. Am not sure that will happen.

    Thanks dudes.

Look the new combinations in your backline was always going to be tested. Any coach would have targeted that so that is not surprising.

I tell you what though, this team just needs a spark, it sounds to me like they are playing as individuals.

Johann (or John) needs to take charge and have the guys calm down here for my money.

They are trying too much without any real success, they should do what they can and the rest will take care of itself.

As for defence, 90% of effective defence is about communication – someone there needs to take charge and both Ruan and Frans are inexperencied in this regard.

But they just need to calm down.

  • WOOOOHOOO!!!!

    What a game!

Had great seats at the halfway line – 2 rows up, and boy was it a cracker!

Stormers were really well-organised on defence, while the Sharks lack of match-fitness meant our defence was very poor.

While JDV was a big loss, I think the 2nd half was gonna turn this way in any event – we dominated the 1st half everywhere except the scoreboard, and we steadily wore down their forwards.

For the record, TT, the backline generally played well, and Adi was awesome on defence and attackp; as attested to by a number of my Stormers neighbours at the game.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 370) : i never said the backline was poor. i said adi is not good enough to start. three simple tackles missed and poor decision making. he is a super sub. bobo out played him as i said he would. and johan muller needs to be demoted. his discipline is poor and it rubs off on the players around him. and stefan needs to work on his attack. his defence is good though.
