Bulls captain Victor Matfield has been ruled out of Saturday’s clash against the Blues after he sustained a shoulder injury in the 33-20 win over the Reds in Pretoria last Saturday.

Rugby 365 reports that with the arrival of the British & Irish Lions in just under three months, the last thing the Bok coach needs now is long-term injuries to his top players – with Matfield being a vital cog in the Bok mix.

There will be concern in the Bulls and Bok camps over Matfield’s injury, who tumbled to earth while trying to collect a restart in the second half.

He was treated on the field and tried to stay on, but later left the field and was replaced by Danie Rossouw.

Initial reports suggested that he had damaged his AC joint and could be sidelined for a long time.

The Bulls confirmed on Monday that the lineout kingpin has a grade 1 tear in his AC joint, which means he will definitely not be able to play against the Blues on the weekend.

“I think Victor will be on the sideline for two to three weeks, but the full extent of his injury will only be known once has gone for x-rays,” Dr. Org Strauss said in a statement released by the Bulls.

Matfield is scheduled for further x-rays this week, which will determine the length of his absence from the Super 14.

  • Quite interesting to compare the outpouring of support for the two injured Springboks.

    Matfield out for three weeks

The Vodacom Bulls’ captain Victor Matfield will be on the sideline for three weeks following the shoulder injury that he picked up against the Reds at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.
Matfield’s x-rays confirmed on Monday that he has injured ligaments in his AC joint and as a result of this he will miss the games against the Blues as well as the Lions and probably also the clash against the Stormers.

Dr Org Strauss said on Monday afternoon that Matfield has a grade one tear in his ligaments but luckily nothing was broken and therefore he will be able to make a quick return.

  • ok… so we will see how spot on my “Fragile Five” article was… two of the five went down this weekend and are going to be out for a while.

It’s a bummer, cos the Stormers are next up for me in LMS.Can they beat the Reds without Jean? I mean, surely they must be able to?

  • Well I know he holds the team together…but let’s be honest that his leaving the field did not affect the Bulls at all…I actually think they stole more line-out ball and rucked a lot better after he left…not sure if that is a mere co-incidence…

Their backline also played a lot better, something about only having backs in it.
