Beast on the bench

The Sharks have named a side to take on the Lions in Durban this weekend that features a single change to the match 22 from last weekend’s outfit. Fit-again prop Beast Mtawarira will be on the bench in place of young Barra Mthethwa.

John Smit is again the starting hooker, with Deon Carstns and Jannie du Plessis joining him in an all-Bok front row. Both front row replacements are Boks too, of course and Bismarck du Plessis and the Beast should swing the forward battle in the home side’s favour. Johann Muller captains the side from the second row and he is joined by Steven Sykes and Alistair Hargreaves – a pair of youngsters determined to make their mark on the Super 14 this seasson.

The twins, Keegan Daniel and Jean Deysel are again the starting flanks, with Jacques Botes’s journey back to full fitness continuing off the bench this week. Number 8 Ryan Kankowski will relish another opportunity to test Earl Rose’s defence …

It’s all continuity amongst the backs as well, with exactly the same starting lineup and reserve bench as last week. Rory Kockott will look to build on his good form last week, while Ruan Pienaar and Frans Steyn will have another 80 sorely-needed minutes to settle as a combination in the attaacking axis. Adi Jacobs, Odwa Ndungane, JP Pietersen and the veteran Stefan Terblanche comprise a settled looking outside back division.

For the uncapped trio of Ross Conrje, Riaan Swanepoel and Zuks Vulindlu, Saturday will represent another opportunity to make their long-awaited Super Rugby debuts.

15. Stefan Terblanche
14. Odwa Ndungane
13. Adrian Jacobs
12. Francois Steyn
11. JP Pietersen
10. Ruan Pienaar
9. Rory Kockott
8. Ryan Kankowski
7. Jean Deysel
6. Keegan Daniel
5. Johann Muller (Captain)
4. Steven Sykes
3. Jannie du Plessis
2. John Smit
1. Deon Carstens

Replacements:
16. Bismarck du Plessis
17. Tendai Mtawarira
18. Alistair Hargreaves
19. Jacques Botes
20. Ross Cronje
21. Riaan Swanepoel
22. Luzuko Vulindlu

  • Keep those laaitjies on the bench as much as possible. This is a tough tournament, they should only be used in the case of an injury.

You guys really should read the how to section.

Once you have all XV players selected only then will it give you an option to change them.

If you trade a guy right out of your staring XV, you have to first fill your XV before you get the options to change it.

Changing the Starting XV is straight forward… find a guy currently in the starting XV. Next to his name, you will find a dropdown containing the others players in your squad, in that position who are not in the starting XV. Pick one of them and hit the button with the two arrows. That will replace the current player with the new one.

  • guys – just to explain one more thing here…

If you trade out a player who is in your starting XV, the replacement player is not automatically added to your starting XV. This means you will have an incomplete starting XV and will need to add a player before you can make changes.

    Does that make sense?

  • Howcome Bissie is on the bench again? He made a huge impact last game, and John made an even bigger impact at tighthead when he shifted there against the Stormers. Mujati was finished after the 1st scrum against John while he was coping with Deon/Jannie.

And then bench player is usually someone who can set on both sides…
But if Tendia is not fit…Heinke is the only other option…
Bok Props should be Tendai/Smit with Jannie bench and Heinke in the squad…

  • Now if only Secret special agent X would reveal the team to stave off the invasion by the Australians on our Nation then I could get my FL finalised.

Bring back the cold war I say? That way agent X can go to Russia to work against communism and the Stormers can get a new coach who doesn’t play silly buggers.

  • Good team…Ross Cronje still very young but believe he is good scrummy..michaelhouse boy, rovers player and he did extremely well in U19 tournament last year. John recons he is good so let’s see. Personally have not seen him play that much myself but believe that he is to bet on.
Someone please help me: Who is Luzuko Vulindlu?????
Earl should prepare himself….Ryan gonna kill him.
Gonna be tight game but Sharks should win…hopefully with a bonus point!

  • @robdylan (Comment 92) :

yes he did, but in true KGB style he bracketed Kalie and Jean. I would have thought with them playing tomorrow that any fitness test that was required would have been done today already.

  • Looking much better with Beast back – just need Waylon now.

We always have a tough one against the Lions, but we should take it.

  • @Debs (Comment 91) : Debs, Not many of us have seen Vulindlu in action but he played in the pre season warmup game and from all accounts did a decent job. Supposed to be quite speedy. Looking forward to seeing what he can do if given a run out.
