Tough prospect awaits Lions in Durban

With the perfect start behind them, the Auto & General Super 14 Lions now face another unbeaten South African side – also victorious in a local derby match last week – The Sharks in Durban in Round Two of the Vodacom Super 14 at The Absa Stadium Durban on Saturday (7.10pm kick-off).

The GLRU reports that coach Eugene Eloff has resisted any urge to make changes to last week’s winning side, retaining the same matchday 22 but his Sharks counterpart, John Plumtree has brought in Tendai Mtawarira who has returned from injury and has been named on the bench.

This fixture is always huge and matches between these two sides produce their fair share of excitement and intensity as they go up against one another. With the Lions having earned a bonus point in their 34-28 victory over the Cheetahs to sit pretty in second place on the log, they will relish the opportunity to have a go at The Sharks who came from behind to score a 20-15 victory over the Stormers in Cape Town.

Beating the Cheetahs was “the ideal start for us” according to Lions coach Eugene Eloff. As the first match of the tournament, there are obviously areas to improve upon – for all the teams – and this tough away match against the Sharks gives the team the opportunity to grow their game and put pressure on the hosts ahead of their tour overseas.

“We know it will be tough in Durban, but we are looking forward to the battle,” explains the coach. The Sharks have an impressive home record and after last week’s away win, will be riding a wave of confidence.

With narrow margins of victory in all but one match in Week 1, the second week shouldn’t deviate too much and a tight game can be expected in a hot and humid Durban in February.

  • A few good players in the Lions side. But they won’t be good enough.

Don’t think it will be that close.

I was super shcocked when I heard him speak the first time. A soft spoken guy, while I was expecting a loud type of guy.

Yeah I was appointed one of the US players and then chatted to Clever while we were in the changeroom about his plans for the S14 in light of the USA 7s playing in the RWC.
