Victor Matfield has a good chance of leading the Bulls in Saturday’s Super 14 match against the Stormers at Loftus Versfeld.
JJ Harmse writes in Rapport that a final decision about Matfield’s fitness will be taken after the Bulls’ training session on Tuesday afternoon. Matfield completed a fitness session without any problems on Monday.
Bulls coach Frans Ludeke cracked the whip at Monday’s session, where a lot of attention was paid to the team’s play at the breakdowns.
“We gave away too much possession against the Lions. It’s something that will have to improve. That is why we worked hard at eliminating those unnecessary errors,” said Ludeke.
Matfield’s possible inclusion is good news for the Bulls, particularly after the news that wing Bryan Habana will be sidelined for at least a month after injuring his hand.
Dewald Potgieter’s chest injury will probably keep him out for two weeks and he will be replaced by Pedrie Wannenburg.
There are a lot of injury concerns among the backs. Zane Kirchner, Akona Ndungane, Wynand Olivier and Fourie du Preez did not train on Monday.
“I have a sore throat and am suffering discomfort when I run,” explained Kirchner.
Ndungane rested because of his chronic shin problem, while Du Preez is recovering from the hand injury he sustained against the Lions.
Ludeke may surprise with youngster Gerhard van der Heever on the left wingTweet
