Guess what, pals? Naka Drotske and his team of no-hope easy beats have thrown in the towel, yet again. Hardly 3 weeks into the competition and still without a win to their name, they’ve decided to name a second-string side for their outing against the Hurricanes.

It makes me so flipping cross when our teams do this. How can we honestly motivate, with a straight face, for the inclusion of a sixth franchise in an expanded Super Rugby competition in the future when two of the franchises we have are so clearly not competitive in the current format? The Lions, to give them a little credit, at least seem to be trying. The Cheetahs are just going through the motions, as usual. Perhaps we now know what the real problem was with the Cats franchise – the fact that the Bloemfontein boys can’t take the heat and would rather just give up when the going gets tough.

So yeah, I’ve done what I can. I’ve picked the Canes on Last Man Standing this week and I’ll put them down to win by 50 on SuperBru, but none of that changes the fact that one of the frontrunners for a semifinal place are going to get an absolute gift of 5 points this week. Thanks, Cheetahs – not only are you pissing all over your own pride, but you’re doing the same to those countrymen of yours who actually are trying to win this thing. That five extra points for the Sharks and Bulls to make up on the Hurricanes.

So do us a favour? Why not rather call off this farce of a team and let the Southern Sabers (or whatever the hell they’re called this week) rather play in the Super 14. It’s not like they could possibly do worse. At the end of the day, all we really ask is that they try.

For those interested, the Cheetahs line up is as follows:

15. Hennie Daniller
14. Bjorn Basson
13. Piet van Zyl
12. Hanno Coetzee
11. Jongi Nokwe
10. Jacques-Louis Potgieter
9. Sarel Pretorius
8. Hendro Scholtz (c)
7. Wayne van Heerden
6. Heinrich Brussow
5. David de Villiers
4. Flip van der Merwe
3. Bees Roux
2. Richardt Strauss
1. Wian du Preez
Replacements:
16. Adriaan Strauss
17. Jean Botha
18. Francois Uys
19. Kabamba Floors
20. Tewis de Bruyn
21. Meyer Bosman
22. Danwel Demas

  • Someone has to end last unfortunately. For SA it’s the Cheetahs, for Aus it’s the Reds & for NZ it’s the Highlanders.

  • So Kabamba can’t even make the starting line up of their 2nd string side??

He really needs to move to another union.

  • Way too emotional Rob, if the Sharks and Bulls are good enough they’ll make up the same 5 points against the Cheetahs when they play them.

Besides, I feel the Cheetahs are doing the best they can with the resources they have. Players are now starting to commit to the union and I think they’ll start improving. Don’t blame the Cheetah’s for SARU/Cheeky wanting a 5th team.

  • 16 of the 22 players involved in the Reds match are playing this week again. And it’s probably safe to assume Juan would have played was he fit. So that would have been 17.

But I have no doubt they did not target this game as a possible win.

I suspect the same as the Blues against the Bulls.

    Why only now though?

How many back to back CC Finals did they play in the last 5 years?
FOUR! TWO of those four were at home.

How many CC titles have they won in the last few years?
    TWO plus ONE shared.

I’ll tell you what. Had ANY of the other unions done that then they would have had sponsors lining the hallways waiting to throw money at them and the coffers would be full from the revenue earned.

How can a union have such CC success and have no money?

I am disgusted to say this used to be my 2nd team because of my school allegiance.

    Hello Rekinek

We have to face facts that they only did well in the CC in the years that the Boks didn’t play most of the CC. The FACT remains though that their small town mentality can be the only reason why that cannot attract a decent sponsor.

And them HAVING Vodacom AND Supersport as sponsors and they STILL can’t afford to buy players?????????? HOW on earth do you explain that. I KNOW the money hasn’t gone into developing their website. So where has it all gone?

  • I am extremely busy so cannot read through all the post, so I hope no one has already answered this. Its a question which I have been pondering for a while now. Since the inception of the S14 (S10;S12) Competition the Sharks have been the best performing South African side in this competition, although never actually winning it until 2009 ;) however, I remember in 2005 when we did so poorly under Putt, the Sharks were being threatened with relegation in favour of the Spears. The Cheetahs have been bottom of the log now for what three seasons as I do not see them getting above 14th on log, howcome they carry on with no such worries of relegation?

  • @Sharksmad – The Blog’s Dudette (Comment 123) :

We were never really “threatened” with relegation. We had a shocker in 2005 and everyone one “said” the Sharks would be the team at the bottom of the SA teams and we would be relegated.

2006 However was a different story and we never looked like being the bottom team in the S14, ONE points difference point seperated us from the top SA side the Bulls. with the other SA sides languishing in 10th spot and below with the Cheetahs (10th) actually being above the Stormers (11th) and the Lions (13th).

What happened after that is history and we all know the bottom team was not relegated.

And since then there has been no reason for relegation as there has been no “extra” Super team to make space for. This year however I believe we will see a return to the courts as the bottom placed team tries to ensure they stay in the S14 next year.

The S14 will expand to a S15 and the Aussies may not be in the mood to allow a 6th SA team into the comp. So one of the current teams will have to make way………

We’ll talk again. The Sharks poached their stars over the years and it will take time before the Ebersohs & kie will start rock SA rugby. They , like WeePee should just hold on their talent and you’ll see something different in the powers of SA rugby.

Must say I am disappointing with the Shimlas in the Varsity Cup tho. Apart from this week (was looking to find a report on the mondays matches here  ) they sure can do better. Like the look of Hans Grobler for them.

Maybe they will come back, but to my mind that doesn’t justify giving them a guaranteed ride into the S14 – same for the Lions.

I am no Cheeky or Look fan, but the Eastern Cape is a rugby nursery, and perhaps some investment and media coverage will help nurture the talent that lies there.

Perhaps a Promotion/ Relegation scenario will be best in getting Unions to develop and hold on to talent.

Was watching sport news on ETV this morning and they had some black guy from Uitenhage who really sum the EC & SA rugby situation. Much better view and one that look to do something for the under previledge kids in that area then trying the political thing like Stofile & Watson.

He bought a rugby club franchise and want to put a lot of money into it and want to spread some interest in the feeder schools in the franchise area. He also mentioned Doc Cravens plans for that area and want to do it the right way.

Thats where they should start not at the top level like S14 rugby.

They have always had good players but cannot hold onto them and until they get the financial side sorted they won’t be able to hold onto them.

My issue is that how can a side play in so my CC finals, win so many of them and still not have money from their EXISTING sponsors or have new sponsors qeueing at the door?

Well we seem to miss each other. Did you know they ABSA set up a Academy in Osfontein and sponsor them with R1 Million per annum? Dont think they would have got that one without being CC champs.

Its not if they dont have money but surely the most important one if you want to grow a S14 franchise. It isnt the Western Force that buy players from everywhere and after a few years they still struggling to produce their own grown players.

Maybe I am just stupid but I like the Brutes setup from Heyneke Meyer. They gave him a three year plan and he started from the bottom structure.

The Cheetahs dont have to build that one, they have it with Grey College, so the next one is a good Academy. Now that one is in place and their supporters just have to be patent to see the younger generation like Bismarck du Plessis, Frans Steyn & Ruaan Pienaar coming through the ranks.

Obvious they’ll try and hold on to this young ones and will go for the cheap option of buying Bolands senior players to help them through the difficult times.

  • By the way I think it will be a tragic for SA Rugby if they lose their S14 franchise.

  • @PaarlBok (Comment 158) :

The were CC runners up in ’04 and won the CC back to back from ’05 – ’07. Surely those structires should have been in place a long time ago not just from last year?

For the Cheetahs the issue is not one of buying players it is one of being able to hold on to their talent.

Money to buy is not the problem, it is money to retain?

After three CC victories and a 2nd place they should be swimming in money. Had ANY of the other unions performed the way the Cheetahs did from ’04-’07 there would be plenty money. Ask oom Harold where it is?

  • Oud-Bokke pak mekaar oor ander man se vrou
    CHARLES SMITH
    03/03/2009 10:55:58 PM – (SA)

Bloemfontein.

Sy reaksie was: “Geen kommentaar.”

Le Roux het by navraag gesê: “As Naka geen kommentaar lewer nie, gaan ek ook nie . . .
