Sport24.com reports that Bulls’ captain Victor Matfield has been elected as chairperson of the South African Rugby Players Association (Sarpa) at its 11th Annual General Meeting.

“It is a great honour for me, as our association is an important stakeholder in South African rugby. It is also good to be back after I had to relinquish my previous position due to my overseas playing contract.

“Having served as president of Sarpa before has given me a good understanding of my role and duties and therefore it is easy stepping into this position,” said Matfield.

Bismarck Du Plessis, Sharks and Springbok hooker has been elected vice-president.

Piet Heymans, CEO of Sarpa, added: “With Victor’s election it shows that the players have trust in and respect Victor for what he stands for.

“I am looking forward to resuming my ties with Victor and by having Eddie Andrews, Victor and Bismarck as Sarpa’s top management team. It (the structure) ensures that the players take responsibility and are directly involved with the affairs of the association.”

Matfield takes over from former Springbok Hennie le Roux.

  • Well at least Eddie is good for something other than scrumming!!!

I can like to think you is mad.

    Imagine the scene…

A whining airconditioner in the background as Victor sits across a boardroom table from Oregan Hoskins…

Oregan: No Victor, we will not be including the Best of Steve Hofmeyr collection and a braai kit with this year’s Springbok contract.

Victor glares icily into Hoskins’ eyes…

    It shouldn’t.

Eddie was involved with SARPA for quite some time and we all know he was able to remain focused and performed with distinction at all times… :???:

  • Bismarck… interesting. I wouldn’t have seen this as his sort of thing, but much credit to him

  • Victor was chosen by all the players because for some strange reason he relates as well to backline players as he does to forwards ….rumours that Rassie is trying to groom some of his tight five for the position in the future have been denied.
