Cheetahs coach Naka Drotské has dismissed suggestions that a court case, involving himself and a Bloemfontein businessman, is having an influence on the team’s performances in the Super 14.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Drotské said reports that the court dispute could have distracted the coach from his job, is simply not true, according to

It was reported in the Bloemfontein-based Volksblad newspaper that Drotské and a former teammate, at both the Cheetahs and Springboks, Ollie le Roux, were allegedly involved in an “incident” after Drotské was “found” at the home of a friend of the two.

The friend, Bloemfontein businessman Jeandré Smith, has launched a ZAR500,000 civil suit against Drotské in the Free State high court because the Cheetahs coach was allegedly involved in a relationship with Smith’s wife.

The court case and the incident at Smith’s house on November 2 has caused an uproar in Bloemfontein and resulted in media speculation that it may be partly to blame for the Cheetahs’ shocking performances this season.

They have lost all three matches – against the Lions, Western Force and Reds – and were particularly woeful in going down 3-22 to the Reds in Brisbane last Sunday.

The Cheetahs coach confirmed that there is an ongoing dispute that it has had a profound impact on his personal life and career as a coach, but said it is not to blame for the team’s series of defeats.

“In reference to the dispute between Jeandré Smith and myself, the matter is in the hands of my legal representatives and I’m not going to contest it through the media,” Drotské said in a statement.

Saying that the reports are based on untested versions, he admitted it all had a profound influence on his personal life and career as a coach.

“The suggestion that the team is being influenced by the accusations levelled against me has been exposed as simply not true,” Drotské said.

“It was clear from the meeting with the team this morning [Wednesday] that no player feels this is affecting the team or their individual form and we will continue to deliver our best.

“I am convinced that any suggestion that this issue is influencing the team is a deliberate mischief-making and I request that these unfounded claims be stopped immediately.”
