QR Reds lock Van Humphries will miss Saturday’s home game against the Sharks with a shoulder injury, while loosehead prop Greg Holmes is also highly unlikely to play.

RedsRugby reports that head Coach Phil Mooney said Holmes has a shoulder injury at the base of the neck which will probably demand he be rested. Humphries has a painful injury to the AC joint that forced him off the field nine minutes in to the second half of Friday night’s match against the Waratahs.

“Greg has played every minute of our four games to date so we’ll probably opt to leave him out for this game so he has this weekend and then the bye a week later to rest and get himself right,” Mooney said.

Young prop Ben Daley is in line to make his first starting appearance for the Reds in Super 14 rugby. Daley’s only appearance so far has been off the bench against the Crusaders at Suncorp Stadium last year.

Daley, 21 this year, has been playing well for the QAS Reds Academy 2nd XV side in curtain raiser games, as has the likely bench replacement at lock, former Highlanders forward Ezra Taylor.

Adam Byrnes, who started both games for the Reds in South Africa, will come into the starting 15 for Humphries.

Mooney will officially name his full starting team on Wednesday morning.

  • and the excuses start. just throw in the towel. the sharks are going to thrash you (if stefan is given a break  ) my prediction is sharks by 50 if stefan is rested or sharks by 20 if he plays.

    Much smaller margin IMO.

The Reds VERY seldom get involved in high scoring games.

Probably about 4 of the 5 lowest scoring games in S14 history involved the Reds. (I suspect)

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 2) : that seems to be against aussie teams. but i do agree the pd won’t be 50. the sharks waste far too many opportunities to put on a high enough score. the sharks also have a great knack of going into defence mode when they are ten points up. but if the sharks are willing to keep the ball with forwards, then expect a big win.

  • we need to do some good man management for this game. Start with Downey and Vulindlu at least. Get the bonus sowed up and a 20 -point lead by the hour mark, then let Swannie and the boys take over

Sheez you make it sound like they are just going to GIVE us the BP.

This side is not stupid and their unstructured play will probably give us a hard time.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 6) : we need to play with confidence, KSA… part of what we need to do this year is become accustomed to (and comfortable with) the favourites tag. We deserve it and we ain’t gonna shake it. We need to learn to use it to our advantage.

Well there’s your problem right there!

He’ll need an operation to put it back on the top of his arm

  • @robdylan (Comment 4) : they are going to. the reds are hurting after some big games. the pace they play the game at is going to cause them to burn out. all the sharks need to do is slow the game right down. the reds hate playing slow games so they’ll get impatient and the sharks will clean their clocks.
