The CA Brumbies have made one change to their starting forward pack and re-arranged their backline in readiness for their Investec Super 14 Week Five local derby against the NSW Waratahs at Canberra Stadium on Friday, 13 March.

CA Brumbies website reports that blindside flanker Peter Kimlin earns his first start of the season after coming off the bench for the first three matches while Tyrone Smith also receives his first run-on appearance at inside centre. Smith’s inclusion allows Wallaby captain Stirling Mortlock to revert to his more familiar role of outside centre with utility back Adam Ashley-Cooper shifting to the wing.

Joshua Holmes will also start at scrumhalf against his former province, replacing Patrick Phibbs who falls back to the bench.

CA Brumbies Head Coach Andy Friend says the incoming trio has earned their first run-on starts for the side.

“Tyrone’s been very impressive in his performances off the bench this season and he and Stirling have a good understanding of one another having played half a season with each other last year,” he said.

“Like Tyrone, Peter has been solid through the first part of season after being part of the Spring Tour with the Wallabies at the end of last year. [Blindside flanker] Julian Salvi has put together three excellent performances but we’ve opted to go with a bigger flanker against what is a quality Waratahs pack.”

“Josh has also earned his opportunity to start and will definitely test out the Waratahs defensive line.”

The CA Brumbies will start an all-Wallaby front row, featuring props Nic Henderson and Guy Shepherdson, and hooker Stephen Moore, who re-signed with the ACT province for a further two years this week, while former Waratahs lock Ben Hand will pack down alongside Mark Chisholm.

The CA Brumbies reserves list has also received a facelift with Huia Edmonds making his first appearance in the CA Brumbies’ 22 for 2009 while Shawn Mackay has been bracketed with Sitaleki Timani, who is in doubt after sustaining a knee injury representing the Brumby Runners against the Australian Barbarians on Sunday. Phibbs, Salvi and Clyde Rathbone will also start off the bench alongside Ben Alexander and Matt Toomua.

“It’s great to see Huia back in the 22 after what has been a disruptive run of injuries,” Friend said. “He’s worked his backside off to return from a knee reconstruction at the end of last year. He was very solid throughout the [internal] Twilight Tens and proved he was ready to go after a very impressive hit-out for the Runners over the weekend.”

The CA Brumbies will be vying for their 100th Super Rugby win on Friday night.
