The Lions have been boosted by the return of Springboks Jannes Labuschagne and Heinke van der Merwe to their pack for Saturday’s Super 14 match against the Stormers at Newlands.

This time coach Eugene Eloff has selected Andre Pretorius who was bracketed on the bench because of injury before the Lions’ last match against the Bulls a fortnight ago. He subsequently was declared fit and started against the Bulls and, as in that match, Earl Rose will get his run off the bench.

SAPA reports that Labuschagne will partner Anton van Zyl in the second row with Gerhardt Mostert warming the bench.

Former Cheetahs centre Barry Goodes takes over from Doppies le Grange at inside centre and Franco van der Merwe is back off the bench in place of flank Ernst Joubert, who plays for the Vodacom Cup side this weekend.

Van der Merwe missed the Bulls match because of suspension and his return sees Lawrence Sephaka move to tighthead with Gert Muller dropping to the bench.

The team is: Louis Ludik, Ashwin Willemse, Jaque Fourie, Barry Goodes, Henno Mentz, Andre Pretorius, Jano Vermaak, Willem Alberts, Franco van der Merwe, Cobus Grobbelaar (capt.), Jannes Labuschagne, Anton van Zyl, Lawrence Sephaka, Willie Wepener, Lawrence Sephaka.

Replacements: Hans van Dyk, Gert Muller, Gerhardt Mostert, Todd Clever, Chris Jonck, Earl Rose, Shandre Frolick.

The Stormers were one of the “big team” picks at the start of the S14, NOW you have to hope you don’t need to use them before they play the Cheethas or the Lions.

  • I agree with Walter.

The fact that Rassie is going for a kicking flyhalf in De Waal really means we will not play an expansive game.

And since we cannot win a lineout even if the other team does not participate….you could win a good amount of ball in our territory….
