World Cup-winning Springboks Victor Matfield and Bryan Habana returns to the Bulls team for their Super 14 crunchy match against the defending champion Crusaders in Christchurch on Friday.

Rugby 365 reports that Matfield is back from the shoulder injury he suffered in Round One back in February, while Habana has also made full recovery from the fracture hand he suffered in Week Three.

Matfield also regains the captaincy.

The Bulls team, which disappointed in going down 12-36 to the Highlanders last Saturday, shows four changes, including a positional switch.

There is only one backline change – the fit again Habana taking the place of young Gerhard van den Heever on the left wing.

However, the pack shows some significant changes – with some added bulk.

The return of Matfield at lock, sees Danie Rossouw moving to flank in place of Pedrie Wannenburg, who drops down to the replacement bench.

The final change sees one-time Springbok captain Chiliboy Ralepelle starting at hooker ahead of Derick Küun – who drops down to a bench that features an entire back-up front row in Küun, Jaco Engels and Werner Kruger.

Bulls: 15 Kirchner Zane, 14 Ndungane Akona, 13 Pretorius Jaco, 12 Olivier Wynand, 11 Habana Bryan, 10 Morné Steyn, 9 Fourie du Preez, 8 Pierre Spies, 7 Danie Rossouw, 6 Potgieter Dewald, 5 Victor Matfield (captain), 4 Bakkies Botha, 3 Rayno Gerber, 2 Chiliboy Ralepelle, 1 Gürthro Steenkamp.
Replacements: 16 Jaco Engels, 17 Werner Kruger, 18 Pedrie Wannenburg, 19 Derick Kuün, 20 Heinie Adams, 21 Burton Francis, 22 JP Nel.

  • not the wisest move i have seen. the crusaders is a big game, so you want settled players. but i don’t mind anything that helps get a draw in this game is fine by me.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 2) : ha ha, captaining ability. since his return from france his concern should rather be his poor form.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 3) : mmm like saturday. he was woeful against highlanders. ok not as woeful as other scrummies, but by his standards he was poor. the replacement scrummie for saders seemed quite a handful when he came on so maybe ellis isn’t that big a loss. and fdv hasn’t had his annual injury yet, so it is due. rather sooner than just before the lions tour.

The lonely letter at the end of my post is what I expect his grade to be.
