Guys – the latest information I’ve managed to glean is that Brumbies lock Shawn Mackay is starting to come out of the medically-induced coma that he’s been in ever since being hit by an armed response vehicle in Durban on Saturday night.

Early signs are pretty encouraging, from the perspective that the big man at least seems able to respond to questions by blinking his eyes. It’s a hell of a long road back for him, though – he’s had to have pretty major spinal surgery, including the fusion of a number of vertebrae. Mackay, his family, friends and teammates are going to need a huge amount of support in the weeks and months to come. At this stage, it is far too early to tell whether the 26-year-old will be able to walk, run or play rugby again.

There are two ways (that I know of) that you can show your support and send Shawn a message of support; check out this article in the Telegraph. Leave a message and it will be conveyed to the Brumbies management. Alternatively, you can join this group on Facebook.

All the best, Shawn Mackay. Rugby is a global family and we all support you to the fullest!

  • Mackay dies…

Brumbies lock Shawn Mackay passed away at St Augustine’s Hospital in Durban at 3am on Monday.
The 26-year-old suffered a cardiac arrest, according to a Brumbies spokesperson.

Mackay had been in hospital, critically ill with multiple injuries, since 29 March when he was hit by an armed response car in a Durban street at 4:15am after leaving a nightclub. Mackay’s parents, John and Leonie, and girlfriend Trish flew to South Africa on Tuesday to be by his side.

Team officials said Mackay had shown some positive signs after being brought out of a medically induced coma late last week and underwent surgery.

‘After his surgery, Shawn contracted an infection in his bloodstream,’ said the Brumbies’ chief executive, Andrew Fagan. ‘He deteriorated rapidly and suffered a cardiac arrest from which he didn’t recover.

‘It’s devastating news for his family and for all of the Brumbies community. Our thoughts and those of the players are with his family at this most difficult time.’

Brumbies coach Andy Friend told his squad about Mackay’s death when they landed in Sydney on Monday afternoon (Australian time)…

  • Awful news.

Its never nice to hear of the passing of anyone, but most of all a young man with his whole life ahead of him.

God be with his family and may his soul rest in peace.
