Sharks can only get better

The Sharks may be on top of the Super 14 totem pole, but captain Johann Muller feels their rivals haven’t seen the best of them yet.

www.rugby365.com

Speaking after his team’s impressive 33-17 win over the Hurricanes at the weekend, Muller expressed his delight at the four points that put his team back on top of the standings.

Outscoring the Hurricanes by three tries to two, it was their defence and two-try blitz in the first 10 minutes of the second half that sealed the victory for the home team.

But it was also a game littered with errors, many of them coming from the Sharks.

“Obviously we are happy with the four points,” Muller said, adding: “But I don’t think we were at our best.

“We made a lot of mistakes and we didn’t keep hold of the ball all the time.

“However, we are very happy with four points we got against a quality side like this,” he said of a Hurricanes team that made them sweat.

Muller pinpointed a lack of ball control as one of the problem areas.

“We didn’t keep the ball in the first half and at the break we just said we have hold on to the ball and build some pressure.

“Then they made a couple of mistakes and we scored from it.”

  • “We didn’t keep the ball in the first half and at the break we just said we have hold on to the ball and build some pressure.”

That just about sums it up. Once we started to be patient with our attacks…we were able to create the pressure that led to the errors…which led to the tries.

It’s no secret though that defence is still our strong point but I’m really impressed with the way we counter-attack…you can’t call that ugly rugby at all.

Well done to Zuks – we all had questions last week…but did he step up or did he step up? From the moment he made that first big tackle…I knew he was ready for the big stage. May he keep working hard and grow from this performance….hope the injury was nothing to worry about.

  • @blackshark (Comment 2) : we only attack for twenty minutes a game. we defend the first half. come out attack for twenty. close up shop for the last 20, nevermind that a bp is only a try or two away. sharks need to up their game. but in saying that their defence is amazing. but how much more can we take. defence kills a team energy wise. i think this bye will come just in the nick of time.

Your vision of “perfect rugby” is a nice fantasy, but it doesn’t exist in the real world. In this game, you need to rock up and score more points than the opposition, week in and week out. That’s waht the Sharks are doing.

  • @robdylan (Comment 7) : rob how many tries have the sharks actually created this year? they are defensively brilliant, but defence injures and tires players. especially the scrambling defence of the sharks. we saw how the had a blow out the sharks had against the reds after the defence they had to put up in the previous 2 weeks. after the bye we play 4 big defensive games. when will the blow out happen? semi finals? you may call it petulance, i call it concern.

@Baldrick (Comment 6) : i am sure the chiefs will laugh at that comment when we lose a game.@rekinek (Comment 11) : yes but not to get a nice cushion between us and 2nd. chiefs lost two games more than us and we are the wons under pressure. see my concern about bp’s.

about the chiefs – they still need to face hurricanes and bulls at Loftus. and the stormers (who tend to pick themselves at the end of the season) will not be easy at newlands.

same with waratahs – but they have much easier trip down here

  • to be honest though, i expect the chiefs to lose one game in sa. that will take the pressure off the sharks. i feel the saders and bulls shouldn’t bother the sharks too much, but the games that worry me are the tahs (who like the sharks have also been playing ugly effective rugby) and the landers, that are beatable in the last 20, which is amazingly the point the sharks stop attacking. so yes say we also lose one more, we should be on top smiling. i am hoping we have the energy though to win them all.

We should be looking to get maximum against the Cheetahs though…whatever we did wrong against the Reds – I hope we’re not going to do against the Cheetahs. That should add even more pressure on the Chiefs…who still have some tricky corners to negotiate.

  • @robdylan (Comment 7) : oh and didn’t you actually read what i said. i have been praising the teams overall defence from day one. maybe you missed it the first 20 times. and wasn’t i praising js yesterday while others were ripping into him. and other than my concern over stefans attack haven’t i praised the guys defence and control from the back. everyone seems to forget about that. i have been fair on frans this season. adi i praised and then he cocked up the next game, so i don’t want to praise him again, although other than his 3 stupid/poor tackles he was hot on saturday. i could go on, but i don’t want to be seen as actually liking the guys.

i however haven’t ever doomed the teams chances like you have in a few of your articles. i point out flaws in individuals but i don’t knock the team. lets actually look at my pre season predictions sometime and see how wrong i have been.

  • here is my game plan for saturday. one of the big forwards set up fast ball, rory then passes quickly to frans who will crash between bossies and jlp. if he happens to get tackled by some sheer miracle, then adi must get handed the ball next to set up jp. we keep doing that all day, we’ll walk away with a 50-7 win. if we resort to kicking we should still win, but we will have really tired guys for the saders game.

  • @try time (Comment 72) : oh and keegs and botes must keep de bruyn under pressure, he gives opposition teams tries for free. i am actually pleased deysel is injured for this game, because the keeg bote pair will be far more effective.

Actually, I was helluva impressed with him.

He carries the ball VERY well – maintains possession even in big traffic, but also can step. Very strong in the tackle, and even more impressive at the ruck.

This kid has real talent; but not the flashy kind.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 75) : yeah thats why i put him in the barritt-honiball class. he isn’t the try scoring type, but the grunt work he handles well. he opens the opposition up for the try boys.

Then you’ll like what the guys at planetrugby had to say about him:

” Man of the match: Luzuko Vulindlu, Frans Steyn and Chris Jordaan all scored tries and helped their team to build up an unassailable lead that helped earn the victory. But we thought the defensive work of centre Riaan Swanepoel on Ma’a Nonu and company was a game-defining act after keeping the Hurricanes’ dangerman out on several occasions. His strength with ball in hand was impressive too and barely put a foot wrong. “
