Bulls lock Bakkies Botha will miss Friday’s crucial Super 14 clash against the Brumbies after receiving a three-week ban for striking.

The AAP reports that Botha appeared before a SANZAR judicial hearing for striking New South Wales Waratahs skipper Phil Waugh during the Bulls’ 20-6 win over their hosts at Sydney Football Stadium on Saturday night.

Judicial officer Dennis Wheelahan QC categorised the offence as mid-range where the applicable entry point is a five-week penalty.

The period of suspension was reduced to three weeks, precluding Botha from playing up to and including May 2.

Botha will miss the Bulls matches against the Brumbies in Canberra, the Chiefs in Pretoria and the Western Force in another home fixture in South Africa.

A right to appeal is available to Botha and the Bulls.

  • I don’t entirely agree with the ban but it DOES help the Sharks.

We need the Bulls to lose against the Brumbies to ensure that we don’t drop down the log when we have our bye.

  • I know we always complain about getting the wrong side of the judicial hearings, but I don’t know what to make of this.

If he stuck Waugh and got cited and then punished, how does the “entry level of 5 weeks” get reduced to 3?

Did the commission ask Waugh how much it hurt and the discipline linked to the severity?

    “Ouch” = 1 week.
    “Jislaaik” = 3 weeks
    “Thatwasfugginsore” = 5 weeks?

We always complain about getting a raw deal, but how about less “interpretation” of the law?

That’s why the ELVs are so screwed up! And why a massive investment in the game is going to be reduced to a learning process that taught everyone nothing!

  • Rob and KSA you are both wrong. This does not help the Sharks at all. We need the Bulls to win all their games except against the Sharks. If the Sharks win their remaining games, they will host a semi, if the Bulls beat the Chiefs and we win our remaining games, we will be top of the log. Bottom line, we don’t need the Bulls to lose to anyone except the Sharks, and we need the Bulls to beat the Chiefs. Why do you want the Bulls to lose to the Brumbies? So we don’t have to beat the Bulls to be above them? Damn poor attitude, we need to beat all comers to win the championships, and that is the attitude we must maintain.

  • Also, who the hell cares if we drop down the log during our bye, bottom line is if we win our games, we will host a semi, no matter what position we are on the log after our bye. Come on guys, we should be screaming for every SA team to beat the foreign opposition. This is why the Cheetahs piss me off, they get up for local derbies and roll over and play dead for the foreign teams. This is bad for SA rugby and our chances of a SA team winning the Super 14.

  • If we win all our remaining games (remember we still have to play the Waratahs and Bulls, so if we beat them, the only team who can finish above us on the log is the Chiefs. So we need any SA team that still has to play the Chiefs to pull finger and play well against them and beat them. Unlike what the Cheetahs do against foreign opposition. So we want the Bulls to win all their remaining games except against the Sharks, that way we are ahead on the log and we can rid the semis of some foreigners! Am I the only one to see this?

  • DB – thinking here is that we have already lost once in the final to the Bulls – in Durban. Do we want that to happen again? A trip to Durban for the final is likely to be far more daunting for an Aus or NZ side than it would be for the Bulls.

I’m sorry, but I want the Bulls to finish exactly 3rd, so that they can go and give our final opponents a bloody good going over before they have to fly to Durban to play us.

  • I would much rather host the Bulls in the final than any Australasian team! And I would certainly much rather play the Bulls in the finals at either Loftus or Kingspark than having to travel to play the Chiefs (or any Australasian team for that matter). My comments are all about getting the Sharks in a position to win the final of the Super 14, and I would think that would be the goal of every poster on this site.

  • @robdylan (Comment 19) : Bloody hell Rob, the Sharks are the best team in the Super 14. We don’t need to depend on some special scenario to win this thing. We just need to win the remainder of our games, which if we do will ensure we host all of them. I don’t care what happened in 2007, or any year for that matter, all that matters to me now is 2009 and the Sharks winning the Super 14. If the Bulls come to Durban for the final, we will beat them, if we have to beat them in the last match, and then beat them in the final again, we will do that as well. We are better, we are the best team in the comp, and will win because we are the best, not because some lucky scenario played out.

I Don’t want the Bulls to finish second, I want them to finish 3rd.

Let them travel to Aus or NZ for their Semi. Then whoever wins the other semi can travel to SA a few days before having to take us on.

Does not matter, we just need to beat them, and we should be able to do this, we are better, unless we play like we did on Saturday ever again.

  • I don’t even want to win the Super 14 because we had to depend on some special scenario playing out. I want to win the Super 14 because we beat all the teams we needed to beat (those at the top of the log, those that make the semis). Then we can truly claim to be the best. Otherwise, the Bulls, Stormers and Cheetahs supporters will spend from here until eternity talking about how the Sharks were lucky to win the Super 14.

  • DB, let’s agree to disagree.

Fact is, I am scared of the Bulls because if anyone can perfect the “Cheetahs pattern” that sunk us this weekend, it’s the boys from Pretoria. You’re only as good as your last game and based on that, we are nowhere near the best side in the competition and we’ll need all the help we can get to win it. Perhaps that’s a loser’s mentality – I’ll call it a realistic one.

I took a LOT of damage from the events of 2007. A lot.

  • The Hon. QC was the Judicial Officer in the Brad Thorn John Smit incident at Carisbrook last year. Thorn admitted “the lifting and dropping of Smit constituted an act of foul play”.Mr Wheelahan said the conduct was an act contrary to good sportsmanship rather than a dangerous tackle. After taking all matters into account, including Thorn’s previously excellent record as well as the sanction guidelines prescribed in the IRB Regulations, Mr Wheelahan imposed a suspension of one week” Remember Smit had, because of this tackle, to leave the field before halftime.

  • @robdylan (Comment 31) : Rob, ou maat, I too hurt badly from 2007. I completely understand where you and KSA are coming from, and I would never associate the word loser in any way with either of you. I have just always believed that in any sport, the only way any team wins a championships is by being better than all the other teams during that tournament. It is very rare that a team ends up winning due to a lucky set of circumstances as the Bulls did in 2007. I don’t want the Sharks to win that way, I want there to be no question as to who is the best, and if we win all the remaining games, and the championships, there will be no question.

In my opinion Thorne got off waaayyy too easy – how can the hon QC justify handing down a 3 week suspension to Bakkies for a “non-event” , but only one week to someone who executed a spear tackle??? Methinks the SA players are just such easy targets and that our own unions should do a bit more citing after dodgy calls.

Funny thing is, I am usually a serious pessimist, you never see me before a match talking about how we will win and so forth. My mom once said about me “you were going to be an optimist, but you just didn’t think it was going to work out!” But for some reason this time, I just want to win every game on the runout. I had a feeling we would lose one more, but we have it in us to just do it and win this thing. Not sure why I feel so optimistic, I just think too much is going our way this season. Our guys will be back soon, and we will be a full strength side, on a roll, going into the semis, having won 4 games in a row. It really is lining up for us proper this year.

  • @diablo (Comment 44) : Two flaws I see in your logic. 1. Bakkies hit him, that makes it an “event”. 2. You describe the problem being that SA players are treated unfairly by the citing commissioners, then you say we should cite more players. How do you expect citing more players will make the citing commissioners treat South Africans any fairer (according to your argument).

For me the ideal scenario is for both the Sharks and the Bulls to win out. That will set us up for an intense match for home-field advantage and an even intenser re-match in the final.
